Missed 4th gear while downshifting! Is my car OK?

Recommended Posts

On my way to work today, I was taking a right hand turn circular off ramp and was downshifting from 6th to 4th in my 2000 996 C2 Cab. I guess the momentum of the turn made me shift into second - this is the first time I have ever done this in 20 years of driving! I was going about 60-65 miles an hour at the time. Needless to say, the engine revved up way higher than it should have. I am so ashamed and disturbed by the careless error and hope I didn't have a "money shift" event.

Nothing seems to be wrong with the car. Its idling well, starts well, and just a few minutes ago I took it out on the highway for a test drive (at 12AM because I can't stop thinking about it). On the test drive it accelerated strongly through second to about 6800rpms at 69mph, and in third I pushed it to about 6000rpms at 90mph before I backed off. No engine noises that I am aware of, although I never rev the car that high normally so I really don't know what it should normally sounds like (it sounded great! throaty and with a high pitch whirl in the background).

Should I still be worried about the engine?? Can someone put my mind at ease?

Thanks for your reply and I'm hoping I don't have to buy another engine!

It sounds like it is OK. The over rev was probably logged in the OBD which may affect what Porsche will do for you if you have a problem. It is more likely the tranny to worry about than the engine, but as I said it sounds OK.

Hi Joe

This shouldn't have hurt your engine at all or logged anything in the DME. If you hang on all the way to the 7300rpm limiter (7300rpm is still safe but the max safe speed the engine will go to) in second it equates to approx 74mph. If you dropped it into 2nd by accident at 60-65mph this will not have caused the engine to rev anywhere near 7300rpm. In fact it will only have revved it to between 5900 and 6400 rpm if you work out the math. This is way under the max safe revs and no harm done.

just to be on the safe side, if you are that concerned, i'd have a compression/leakdown test done.

while this may or may not be definitive as to whether there is engine damage ( bent valves ) it might just give you the peace of mind you are looking for.

on the other hand..........................
