  1. I'm away from home and was enjoying a drive with the top down on my 1999 996 Cab. Got to the hotel and went to close the roof, but nothing.. I parked it and looked at the roof mechanism. It seems the rear of the top cover clamshell operates as expected but the left and right side don't 'unlock' at all.. I've looked down the sides at the mechanism and it all looks good. The only problem I can visibly see is that the carpet on the cab decking has shifted and is wedged between the top and the roll-over protection system. However I don't see how this can stop the front left/right sides of the clamshell from unlatching.. When I operate the top, the rear of the clamshell motors up about 1-2 inchs at the rear side only and then timeouts. Press again is it closes up okay the 1-2 inches on the back. The sides of the clamshell don't seem to unlock/move. How to unjam it?
  2. A '99 with egas? Are you sure it is egas? I thought that was only after 2003
  3. Perhaps he means the rigidity of the car? No sure about the bird noises either.
  4. Is there a fuse that governs just the high-speed fans? I'm tempted to try to jumped the high speed fan itself into the output of the low speed fan relay, does this seem like a reasonable test?
  5. My 99 C2 Cab has begun to overheat slight (right hand of 180) on hot days. I've checked all the threads and can confirm: - low speed fans come on when AC is pressed - fuses (row C 8 and 10) both fine (I don't think the low speeds would work either in this case) - durametric can drive the low speed fans - durametric "RPM stage 2" which is right under low speed fans (I believe high speed fans) does nothing - I've removed both the low speed relays and the high speed fans do not pulse on and off as they should do. - If I feel the high speed relays with the low speed relays out, I don't feel any clicking So it seems that the relays of the high speed fans aren't getting energised. What else can I test to narrow it down?
  6. I'm looking at buying a 997 and was running a few VINs thru AutoAtlanta's decoder. A couple worked but two showed no info. Is this normal or should I be suspicious of cars who's VIN doesn't show up? I haven't carfaxed them but assume they would show up there.
  7. Ok. I'll dig around in that area again. Lots of other pipes, etc. in the way on my 99 Tip. Perhaps it is easier from beneath the car.
  8. Sorry for the noob question.. I've narrowed down my engine cutting out to the Crank Position Sensor (Impulse Sender) and have ordered a replacement. But I can't seen to locate it for removal. I've located the following thread and picture from the forum, but I don't follow it. The thread mentions access from the wheel well/arch but that seems too far forward for the CPS. Loren mentioned "The crankshaft position sensor is in the engine bell housing surround the flywheel". While I know the general area, there are lots of pipes, etc. I'm not sure which thing is which up there? The picture in the thread is from an engine out of the car so I can't place where it would be installed and the access route. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=24044 I've searched and searched but can't find anything. Also the workshop manual doesn't seem to mention it.
  9. Thanks. Great tip on the A/C manifold tester.. Sounds like a good multitasker.
  10. Thanks for the pointers. JFP: is there a particular name/size for the Porsche adaptor? Or is it VW spec? What should I ask for. Sorry I'm a newbie to fuel pressure testing.
  11. I've got an intermittent engine cut out issue. I need to check the fuel pressure but see lots on Amazon. Is the test point connector common or difficult to find? Does the durametric show rail pressure?
  12. Sounds like the cover may have jammed after the slow roof movements. Do you have a durametric to read codes out of the top mechanism? The slow top movement are likely either mechanism lubrication or low fluid issues (I suspect the latter).
  13. Hmmm.. I hadn't thought of that.. That is an interesting idea.. What torque are the plugs supposed to be?
  14. My 996 Cab Tip has developed a chirping squeak. It occurs while standing still at low RPMs and particularly on light low end acceleration. Initially I thought it was the poly rib belt slipping (which I know it shouldn't be due to the tensioner and the belt being pretty new). So I figured I'd locate the noise by removing the airbox, starting the engine and using a short length of plastic tubing to localize the area of the sound. I expected to be coming from one of the pulleys but it wasn't. The sound appears to originate from the left (drivers) side of the engine next to the coolant tank. It can also be heard easily from the rear drivers wheel well. I didn't think there was much back there except the engine itself? Any ideas? That area seems very inaccessible so I hope its not a PITA to fix.
  15. I've seen this issue when the headlight isn't fully in the connector when the light is inserted. I'd suggest cleaning the plug/connector themselves and really make sure the whole light goes in smoothly and fully.
  16. Have you checked the hydraulic oil level? It is underneath the carpet that the top folds down on. A low level can cause the whole mechanism to lag. Also check that the main securing bolt (under the top cover at the back) is secure. I've seen some that are a bit loose cause the top to open a bit skewed.
  17. Great good to know. Just to double check: Would the pressure equalization valve stop squealing when the end is turned off? I assume the pressure in the tank changes at that point.
  18. Alas I didn't think of it. I tried to reproduce (long fast run down from Tahoe to Bay Area) and was unable to replicate. Perhaps it was a change in altitude thing?
  19. I'm still chirping. Given that changing the tensioner is supposed to be PITA, I've just left it.
  20. Thanks for the pointers. You guys are the best! The fans weren't going, so I'm assuming its the fuel system. I'll take it on a long run to try to replicate and isolate the source.
  21. Of course it could be a faulty fuel filler cap, but as has been pointed out, this usually throws a code.
  22. For the fabric not lining up, check my recent posts on the topic. You may have a replacement top, the GAHH ones have a spring in a pocket in the fabric itself, if it gets stuck the fabric would fold and fall correctly to align with the frames.
  23. I just drove from the Bay Area to Lake Tahoe in my 99 996 convertible. After the drive, I stopped and heard a loud continuous squeal from the front-end of the car while the engine was running. I turned off the AC and the squeal remained, but stopped when I turned the engine off. There's not much at the front of the car to make such a noise especially when the fans are off (AC off, coolant temp between the 8 and 0 on the temp gauge). I videoed the front of the car to let you hear the squeal. It seems louder behind the wheels and perhaps on the passenger side. I had this once before after a drive to Yosemite but was unable to track it down. Sounds like a pressure relief valve or leak??? Could it be the increase in altitude? 1000ft --> 5000ft Any ideas?
