  1. I have to agree, I know that a lot of people gravitate to the 19" wheels, but personally I think that I like the look of a little more rubber between the wheel and the road, for a more balanced look. I also like a simple wheel that looks clean but aggressive especially when moving slowly through traffic, and at speed the 5 spoke Cayman S wheel virtually disappears, another plus. Finally, I have a friend with a '05 987S, his car came with 19" Carrera wheels, he found it a bit rough from a ride quality stand point for a street car, he went to the 18" wheel too. Thanks for the feed back everybody!
  2. Ashley, can't say that I know where it went amiss, but these guys just replaced their top as well, maybe they have some insight to the adjustment problem... http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...c=19706&hl=
  3. thanks for the replies, now all I have to do is decide how bad I want them... ;) I didn't know there was a TSB to refer to, I'll check that out as well.
  4. Will the 18" Cayman S 5 spoke wheels fit without issue on a my06 987? Can I use the original lugs from the 17" original Boxster wheels? Are there any spacers involved? Have I forgotten anything? Thanks!
  5. Sorry pic isn't great Can't quite make out that link, can you post it if it is publicaly accesible? Thanks
  6. I dropped by the dealer after lunch and made the request for them to clear the message. After speaking to 2 service advisors and explaining to the "kids", (sorry young people) that a 987 is not a 986 and that the service intervals are different, and that no I didn't want a $200 1 year inspection while I was there, just the message reset... They left to ask a tech to squeeze the job in! I waited about 15 minutes by my car and a tech I know from my 986 owenership days appear, we chatted, I told him about my DIY HID conversion, he smiled and said no problem, I'll reset the service reminder for you right now. A few minutes later he returned with the car, we talked about how nice the 987 was and then I was on my way... I am not looking forward to the 2 year service visit :o P.S. No, I am not that old, they were just that young...
  7. If it doesn't seem right, maybe it isn't! There has to be a lot more to this story. Does the owner seem like the kind of person that would thrash the car, there should be tell tale signs of this if they are... Look carefully! As previously posted there are lots of cars out there, no need to pin all hopes on tis one...
  8. I figured that the dealer can reset it but what starts the timer running, obviously not me taking delivery? I just changed my oil 1000km ago and I am not about to give the dealer $350 for an 'unneeded' oil change... Maybe I should just ask them to reset the message? (although they may decline or charge for this!)
  9. I thought that this reminder to get service was based on 2 years or 30,000km which ever came first? I took delivery of my car late October of 2006, I now have 17,900kms on the clock so I am not even close to either limit. (It appeared on March 08). Could this have been triggered when the dealer took delivery of the car? Can it be reset to come back at the appropriate date? Can it be ignored?
  10. I read your post, interesting, also interesting that you are at 8.5l where as all I put in to achive all bars lit was 8l... Hence the reason for my original question, does the car need to be level to get all of the old oil out, I can't really see that the engine oil capacity would vary between engines by 500ml, but maybe? Sorry if my original description was confusing -- I really don't know exactly if I'm at 8.5L -- I think it's more like 8.35L. When I was finished, and had a partial liter of oil remaining, I squeezed the oil container to evacuate the air inside and replaced the cap. I ended up deforming the container to a point where I couldn't accurately read the remaining oil level using the container's measuring window when I allowed air to reenter the container. It is interesting that the 2003 986 owner's manual shows that an oil change with a filter has a capacity of 8.25L. Regards, paul... No worries Paul, It really does sound like it may be tough to get all of the oil out, I am positive that that mine took 8l because all 8 containers of oil are in the engine, nothing left... I guess that all you can do ensure that the OBC display reads full and leave it at that. On a related note, it sure seems like the engine rev's free'r now and pulls harder? (placebo effect!)

  12. An interesting read, and if the sound is flawless, probably worth the cost of admission. But I took the cheaper route, first I tried the Pyle direct connect FM modulator, the unit worked but the signal strength to the radio was so low that I had to use 3/4 volume on the dial to get acceptable volume and that was sitting in the driveway, not on the road! Next I tried the Scosche FMOD01, much better and with a gain control to help with the sensitivity of the CDR23. The sigal was good and the sound was equivilent to a strong FM stattion, not quite as good as a CD. Overall not bad and for the price, acceptable and clear. I still would have liked line level input directly to the radio, but for now it is a good alternative to the much more expensive system. Reading about your installs, begs the question. Did you hardwire the power for the satellite radio as well? I've got a 5 volt direct power supply for my XM radio, but can't find a switched 12 volt power supply to connect to. I've been using the passenger side 12 volt outlet with power supply cord, but that drains the battery if I forget to unplug. Would really like a switched source; any input is appreciated. BTW, I'm asking about switched power supply for my 2007 Boxster S; I was able to find one on my 2001 S. Thanks Sorry, I don't have a Sirius radio, but that doesn't matter your question is about the power... I know there are a number of switched sources of power at the fuse panel, I have a list at home, when I get a chance I will look and repost.
  13. OK, I posted this in another thread but it appears to have gone unnoticed, I would like to know before I do the next oil and filter change (I would like to know that 'all/most' of the old oil is out)... Well, I finally received the Hazet wrench (2169) in the mail last week and changed the oil on my06 Boxster. Interesting that I have seen a number of specifications on how much oil was required; 7.75l to 8.5l because... I drained the oil, replaced the filter and added 8 of the 9 liters of Mobil1 0w40 that I had bought. Since I was aware that over filling was frowned upon I stopped there and set up all of the empties to drain into there partners (4 on 4 so to speak!) So I started the engine and let it warm, drove it around a bit until it was fully warmed up and then parked back in my shop perfectly level so I could check the oil level after dinner. A turn of the key and the OBC revealed that it was 1 segment down. I added the oil that I had collected from the 8 donor containers which was about 200ml. I again went through the process to check the oil and now the OBC showed the level was correct. So only 8 liters (with filter) on my car, it has been nearly a week now and it still registers full. Just in case I thought it could be on the cusp to needing more, I parked on a very slight "right to left grade (2-3 cm difference) and the OBC registered an over-full condition. Is there much of a variance between engines? hmmm, maybe there was some oil left in the engine? I did not have the car level when I removed the oil, only the rear wheels were on ramps (6")

Interesting that I have seen a number of specifications on how much oil was required; 7.75l to 8.5l because... I drained the oil, replaced the filter and added 8 of the 9 liters of Mobil1 0w40 that I had bought. 15. One trick to try when preping your paint with one of the more aggressive grades of polish is to use the 'green painters' tape to protect any exposed edges that the polisher could catch on or be overly worked buy the polishing. This tape can be easily removed and does not leave behind glue residue. Also remember not to apply the tape to a hot surface or use in direct sunlight, but the again you should not be polishing the paint in direct sun any way, right! Remember paint has a rendency to flow away from high points or sharp edges so these are most vunerable. Once you have moved to the finishing grades of polish and wax remove the tape and carry on, this will help blend in the areas that were previously protected by the tape.
  16. Other then the plate, I love the looks of that front end, very clean!
  17. For what it is worth, the last time I checked it, my UMPC running Streets and Trips, showed the ground speed as the same as that of the digital speedometer.
  18. Thanks again Doug, I will probably stick with the 0w40 although 5w50 is tempting especially when Walmart has it on for $32.76 per 5 liter jug! Is that a typo, 0w40 down there is $108 dollars (Australian)?! If so I can't complain!
  19. Great feedback Doug, where I live the climate is much like that of Sydney, rarely snows, right now the night-time lows are around -3 (unusually, normally +3)... This summer I would like to try another DE or 2 and then the temperature will be closer to 25 degrees, is this what you refer to 'if you track your car'? And what is 'Group 4/5 structure'? The difference in cost between 0w40 ($9) and 5w50 ($6.60), about $20 for the fill, so the best choice would win over cost... Just need to find that filter wrench!
  20. Yes, it is on the Porsche approved oil list (that you as a Contributing Member have access to). Here in the states you can find a 74 mm 14 flute wrench at Autozone, Kragen, Pep Boys, etc. Just about everybody has them as the same size fits Mercedes and BMW. Loren, thanks for the reminder about the document access... Just need to figure which viscosity is the best choice. As for the filter wrench, would you beleive that I have been to every store that I can think of here in Victoria and no one carries a 74mm x 14 flute version! Frustrating to say the least, hence my question about the strap style wrench!
  21. So is Mobil1 5w50 'officially' approved for use in the Boxster's (2006 2.7l) engine? If Walmart (Canada) carries it for $36 it would be a bargain! I have only found 0w40 in 1 liter containers; $9 each! Now all I have to do is find a 74mm x 14 flute wench to remove the darn canister cover! Do you think a strap would be safe to use?
  22. They way it is located near the power steering reservoir I would guess some spilled some fluid at some point (it doesn't look recent from the drying in the photo). I would clean the area and monitor for 'fresh' oil.. Rumor has it you know where I can find a cheap oil filter wrench?
  23. Where are you located? I will do it for free if you are local. Hey Loren, if I make the road trip to your neck of the woods, would you extend the offer to me?
