  3. Widening your track is a basic competition change made to many cars when raced. A wider track will lower the roll center therefore reducing understeer. A wider track will also reduce the load transfer to the 'outside' tire which will reduce the loss of grip from the 'inside' tire. Look at the history of Porsche base models to their evolved cousins... 924 > 944, Carrera > GT3RS, etc. Now unless you are tracking the car you probably wont notice the difference. However if you are tracking (or racing) the car, every incremental step toward an optimum setup is a step worth taking.
  4. Is there a "shadetree" method to determining if the resonance flap on the 996 intake is opening at the correct RPM? I can test the solenoid that triggers the vacuum but I want to know if the flap is actually opening @ the correct RPM.

  6. It may depend on where you plan to move. The easiest changes will be those related to emissions. Every state has different requirements that need to be met. In fact, here in PA even different counties have different requirements. I'm no expert but other than emissions, I think that by 2003 Porsche was building the cars all about the same. So things like safety glass, bumpers, etc. should all be the same.
  7. 88k ... just pulled the original 3.4L engine last month after finishing my LNE / JE / Carrillo etc build. The new motor is in the car. After inspecting the old 3.4L, the only signs of wear I see are on the 1-3 cam gears & lobes. This was due to an intermittently failing Variocam solenoid that was left un-repaired for a few years. The RMS had started leaking but the IMS was in good shape for its age.
  8. Thanks Loren, I was wondering why there was a TPS on the pedal in my car which has a cable throttle. You would think Porsche would have had a non-egas pedal designed for the early Boxster and 996. Regarding the cable routing, I was more looking for info on how it lays over the top and back of the engine and down past the gearbox. But no worries, I finally figured it out tonight. It is VERY specific about where it is routed or it gets too short. You have to fish it though the coil on the clutch slave line or else it bends too far to the side and takes up too much slack. Then clip it into the plastic clip that is bolted to the top two bolts of the diff housing cover. After that its a straight shot to the front section you have pictured above.
  9. Hello, I'm looking for a Diagram or Info on routing the throttle cable? Recently had the engine out and upon reinstalling I'm finding the tab where the rear cable section (to engine) connects to the front cable section (to cockpit) doesn't have quite enough slack. If I reassemble correctly it keeps the throttle plate cracked open resulting in a 3000 RPM Idle! LOL I have the Porsche factory PDFs that are floating around but have yet to see the cable routing & adjusting info. Currently I have the cable routed up over the manifolds and down the back next to the trans. Technically its laying on top of both resonance pipes and then drops down the back. Thanks in advance if you can help. - Bill

  11. OK So I just installed an mk1 Aerokit rear wing onto my '99 996 C2. Looks great, but looks are not everything. I bought this to balance out the aero with the rest of the mk1 aerokit already installed. I instruct at the local track and am hoping this gives a bit more high speed stability at over 100mph. Anyway, I was told by the previous owner that the C2 OE wing harness will swap over. It does not. The C2 harness has additional wiring for the wing motor and 4th brake light and most importantly the position sensor wires are permanently attached to the wing motor gearing. So since my rear deck lid was already damaged by a previous owner's botched attempt to fasten a TechArt wing, I decided to cut the harness off. I reused the cut harness & also the fan motor/ engine bay light housing for the Aerokit wing. 3 screws fasten it in the proper location. So far so good. However while the engine compartment light now works, the engine bay vent fan does not seem to be coming on even after getting the car pretty hot on a long test drive. First question is where is engine bay ambient temperature sensor? or does the fan come on due to engine temps? Next question is, if this harness will not allow proper operation of the fan, can somebody give me the correct part # for the correct Aerokit harness. Thanks! - Bill

  13. Well then don't read this cause I have 2 more. :( Last week a buddy of mine put his car in gear after idling for a few minutes... immediately he heard a scraping sound... He called me over and tried to start it...I said "timing chain just broke"... we had it towed. Turned out to be the intermediate shaft. Now here is the kicker. It is a 2005 C2S with less than 8000 miles! Meticulously cared for and serviced. At the dealer the service manager turned the ignition and immediately said... "order a motor, this is toast" No investigation labor BS. Motor arrives Thursday and will be in shorty thereafter. Granted this one is a warranty swap. But there were no questions asked. While at the dealership we saw a boxster with a puddle under it. Yup, some poor lass had just popped her motor driving to work. Believe that was an Int shaft as well if I recall.

  16. 1999 996 C2... Doing a clutch job today and wanted to know how much "play" in the dual mass flywheel is too much? I can "rotate" the flywheel's friction face about 10-15 degrees independently of the back section of the flywheel before I feel ANY resistance... Is this too much??
  17. The weight on the 996 gearbox I had shipped to me was about 150lbs.
  18. I have a 1999 C2 and the ABS is pretty poor for track use. When coming into heavy breaking zones if the front hits any bumps at all.. I wont slow until the ABS gets around to pumping again...it reacts too slow and engages too quickly initially. BTW, as an instructor and racer for 20+ years I know the pros and cons of using ABS so please no speeches :P On newer cars you can "slow down" the ABS which delays the point at which the ABS will activate. This allows good drivers to modulate the brakes more effectively without fear of the dreaded "no brakes" episodes like mentioned above. My question is can this be done with the ABS on these earlier '99 cars? Is this something my dealer can perform for me?

Or should I continue to search #s in the 2 digit ranges? How far either side of your suggested # should I go?

  24. Does anyone have the box from their clear headlights and can get me the Bosch #s off them?
  25. Requesting Bosch part # for the '00-01 clear lense headlight assembly.... My local parts dealer has the following L&R Bosch #s in his system 0 302 473 023 0 302 473 024 But he says there is no photo so he cant tell me if these are amber or clear Bosch units. I know the Porsche #s but need the Bosch cross refererenced #s to be sure. Porsche Amber #s: 996 631 153 01 996 631 154 01 Porsche Clear #s: 996 631 163 20 996 631 164 20 Thanks in advance
