  1. What about the glass window being "soooo small"? Probably not that bad, what is your impression?
  2. I have a 99 cab. Did replace THE PLASTIC WINDOW only. I did go to Porsche of Newport Beach, and asked for who they recommend for top work. They send me to this upholstry shop. They did charge me $500 for new plastic window including installation. Looks great. They used the existing top they did not even remove it. PM if you need me to find the shop name, don't know where I put it :)
  3. I checked the spoiler and I realized that the "achordeon-like" piece that expands below it is broken. I need the piece number. Also, is it easy to DIY? Thanks in advance.
  4. DONT want to worry you could also be a faulty solonoid in the box not leeting you down shift smoothly any flashing leds? like the 4rth gear led and the D led etc ? can mean more issues with your box but filter and new gravity fed atf fluid is the first step Other than the mentioned issue the box operates well. It is just that downshifts from 5 to 4 are is a bit abrupt, not in sync. I guess I'll take to the dealer while under warranty, just in case.
  5. Hello folks, My 99 996 is close to 80,000 miles... and 3k in the extended warranty left. When I reduce manually from 5th to 4th, I have let go of the accelerator a bit or the gear shift would be abrupt, not smooth. I "know" transmission issues are covered under the warranty... should I take it in or it might open a can of worms in a otherwise fine transmission? Maybe is normal in older cars and something not worth looking into?
  6. can I ask you for the independent's info? PM or here? Thanks :D
  7. I did the 60k in a local shop of Mission Viejo as they came recommended by a local exotics dealer. They only charged me $700. You get what you pay for: Oil levels were lower than desired, my CEL came on after that and I had a MAF prob. Coincidence? I took the car to the Newport Porsche dealer, which found out that the other guys had put a K&N filter among other things. I know that there is an ongoing debate regarding the relationship between aftermarket filters and MAF problems.... my bottom line is that I DID NOT expect the shop to put an aftermarket anything without my approval. My guess is that they had laying it around. Thus now, Newport Porsche it is. Expensive, yes. I like the local guy, Dennis, yes. The car works great, yes. I would like to find a cheaper place, but it would have to be much cheaper; otherwise I'd stick with the dealer.
  8. Get Toyo tires. I have tried pirellis and michelin and... toyos. they are QUIETER and harder thus lasting longer. And, they are cheaper. I am sure that for racing purposes they might not fit the bill as well, but I do not race and car is a daily driver. So far I have 15k miles in the rear set and they have a way to go. I push the card relatively hard most of the time.
  9. I did a search for TPMS and from all the results, nome came from the 996 section. Has anybody successfully installed an after market TMPS on an 996? Mine is a 99 and I am thinking about doing it. I have found several units online but can't decide on what direction to go.
  10. Hi all, I am toying around with the idea of changing my 4-spoke black steering wheel (1999 Artic Silver Cab, tiptronic, boxter red interior), for a 3 spoke boxter red wheel. I happen to see that combination at last week's Cars & Coffee in OC and loved it. I have been trying to find a second hand wheel, LAporsche among others, but it is proving hard to find the right color. I also have tried to look for the part(s) I would need, and I am not sure. Do I need to purschase a new airbag? Does a new wheel come with it? Do I just get a new wheel, or keep looking for an old one? I have no idea of costs one vs. the other. Any help would be appreciated. Opinions welcome too.
  11. I went from a new 04 Boxter S manual, to a preowned 99 996 cab tip. I am tall, and the boxter was to snug. Love all leather interior of the 996. Love the power too. The car feels more "sleepy" at low rews than the Boxter, but I wouldn't change back. Yes, the Boxter corners a bit better, but who cares, the 996 is plenty good... after all it is a porsche, no? :D
  12. Hello, looking to acquire my first reader (I am a newbie to DIY but slowly starting to as it is fun). After browsing for a while through the forums, and with a CE light on now, I intend to purchase whatever is more practical/better value in the mid term. Can anybody explain what are the practical differences between the Equus Innova 3100 (recommended in the reviews section) and the Durametric unit that is so well regarded throughout the forums? There is a substantial difference in price, and both have software. Thanks for your input in advance.
  13. I live in Yorba Linda, so close to you. Can you pm me or post the info for the place you took it to? If it is not too much to ask, I would love to see your car, so my wife can see how nice it really looks with the glass! :) Thanks guys Hello: I just got my 99 996 top replaced with a glass window from GAHH. It came out BEAUTIFUL. I bought the top from them and they dropped shipped to an upholsterer they recommended. THe old top gets junked and thenew top is put on. I was charged a flat fee. I live in Diamond Bar and had the work done in Ontario. I work in NB and didn't find anyone out there wiling to work with me.
  14. Hi all again, After dealing with my top issues and having read in the forums, I have decided on replacing the top on my 996 99 with a new one with glass. Now, I can't find a place in Orange County/Los Angeles area that can give me a straight answer on how much they will charge for putting it on. I think I found a place but they send it to an upholster to be installed, and then they do the calibration. I am not convinced that an upholster should even try to put a whole new top on a cab since as I see it is not an upholstery task since the top is new and does not need repair. If anybody could give me some insight on this question, and/or make a recommendation on where to go around OC/LA please do so. I just don't want to mess up. Thanks guys
  15. Ahh, thanks! I already was on top of it, saw your post :)
  16. I have found a few here... I am looking for the same thing but while I do my research here is the link: http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/Tire_Press...ing_System.html
  17. Hello. I had a Boxter S 2003 and I loved it. Fun, enough power, etc. I recently got rid of it and got a 1999 996 c2 cab. I am enjoying the later much more. It is more car. It feels a bit sleepy initially in low rews, a different feeling. But after this, is all just more power. The 996 is also slightly larger and I am a tall guy so I appreciate that too. On a nutshell, I much rather stay with my 1999 996 c2 cab than with my 2003 Boxter S. And I love being able to use the rear seats either as cargo space or to hop somebody around town. Also, the interior of the 911 is of better quality and feeling than the Boxter's. 911 it is for me :)
  18. Yes, the engine spins. That's why I think is a sync problem. BUT!, looking at it again today, I realized that one of the metallic arms that push and pull the clamshell is snapped in two! I realized when I was looking for the hooks today. So, at this point I have to take care of that issue for sure. Maybe it is time to go to the shop uh :) Thanks for your help though. Hi CabC2 Don't do anything that doesn't feel right to you as you have to foot the bill if it all goes t1ts up! It's probably impossible to latch the 3 hooks all the way without someone pushing down on the clamshell at the same time as you spin the hex tool. I would not try to force it without someone applying downward pressure over the hooks. Let's check if your issue is the same as mine was though. 1) Can you hear/feel the clamshell motor spining (ineffectively) when you try to operate from the switch? - answering yes suggests it is the sync issue. 2) Does the rest of the hood open/close process work electrically if you manually move the clamshell with the hex tool?
  19. Finally I had time to try it. I tried to close the clamshell all the way as suggested. I found out that even forcing the hex wrench it did not move. I did not try to force with any other tool than the provided that does not allow for good leverage. What do you mean with "substantial force"? I am afraid of trying too hard to close those three hooks and damaging the mechanism. On the other hand, I have a feeling that you really mean to apply force until it moves period.
  20. I see. What I have not done is fully lock the clamshell into place. Interesting. I'll try it just in case. Engines work I think because I hear engine noises when each part is supposed to work. The two lateral flaps do not react/work either. And, the windows go down all the time instead of up or down depending on whether I am closing or opening the top. But I'll give it a try. Tx :P Hi CabC2. It's worth trying what I did before going to the dealer. If it turns out not to be a warranty issue they will charge $$$ you regardless.... With the engine off so you can hear, try to operate the roof by holding the button down constantly. If we have the same problem, you will eventually be able to hear clicking relays and the clamshell motor spinning for a few seconds but obviously not moving the clamshell. If that is the case here's how mine started working again. I fully opened the roof, helping the clamshell along with the emergency (see manual for procedure) hex tool (anti clockwise to open), this allowed the roof to open fully electrically, then I closed the clamshell (clockwise with the hex tool). Then you need someone to push the clamshell down while you rotate the hex key another turn clockwise for it to lock in place (3 hooks grab the clamshell - you can see them when it's raised - one at the back and one either side). You do need to apply substantial force to do this. I wore down my hex tool as they have soft heads but luckily had alternative tools in the garage! However with the better tool I was able to turn the spindle further and found some free play BEYOND what I though was the final position. There was another 2 turns or so clockwise. I thought to try the roof from the button at that point. It worked fully and has done ever since. A fair assumption is that the clamshell motor was out of sync, hence the rest of the process was stuck indeed waiting for the clamshell! Not sure the diagnostic work or the fix would be covered under warranty although I would certainly view it as a mechanical failure! I will also be following Izzy's excellent hydraulic fluid top up instructions. Good luck!
  21. I got GE Capital and hopefully this week will take the car to fix a couple of issues. I'll post my impressions on GE's performance when I find out. It seems like they honor it at Newport Porsche.
  22. Hello, I will keep you posted. I will be taking car to dealer this next week hopefully. I was out of town for a while thus did not do it yet. I have an extended warranty from GE Capital, and I am curious to find out what covers if anything at all. Probably only the top motor. Again, I will share what I find out.
  23. Anybody knows a good upholstery shop in Orange County, LA maybe? the cheapest way is to replace the plastic window. And that is the least that for sure I'll have to deal with.
