  1. I've been told by a reputable detailer to do as follows on my 996: -Run motor for 5 minutes to warm the engine -Cover intake(s) -Spray engine with the mist setting on the hose (low pressure). Hot motor will cause water to steam... you want this to happen. -Use a mild cleaner spray, and spray around, let set for 5 minutes. -use gentle brushes to loosen dirt/grease -rinse down with mist setting again, use just enough rinsing to rinse away dirt and cleaner -wipedown using microfibre towel.
  2. I immediately thought Ignition Switch also. My A/C stopped out of nowhere one day when I had to drive in stop-and-go traffic for 45 minutes in a wonderful socal heatwave a couple months ago. Replaced the lock assembly and no more problems.
  3. maybe gemballa style hood while you are at it? cf looks cool, but dont need to save any weight up front.
  4. aftermarket parts- right next to Stuttgart performance is RSS - roadsportsupply.com
  5. I'd recommend one of the following: Hergesheimer in Lake Forest 949.458.7223 or Stuttgart Performance in Costa Mesa. 714.432.8815 good luck
  6. when i did my brakes i just loosened the lugs, then jacked up at jack point and got to work. no real need for the stands. It is a quick job and you are not really tugging on stuff at all. and just a thing I always make sure... keep doors/trunks/bonnets closed when I jack a car... not sure if is an issue with our cars, but is something I always make sure to do.
  7. good points.. .sorry i missed that. one thing to consider though: loose teeth, or possibly bent rims...
  8. There should be a table in your manual. I thought it is 36 for front, 44 rear.
  9. I'd say the 02 carreras may be more desirable than others because they 1- are a MKII 2- do not have the fiber optic sound system like later MKIIs. makes it easier to upgrade stereos
  10. Hergesheimer in Lake Forest. herg.net for contact info. These folks are top notch. I have called them up for random work on my 996 and half the time they have sent me to people closer to me and cheaper telling me to go ahead and save a few bucks.
  11. that is a little scary that anyone in a service dept would not know the answer. The book says: -Vehicle level -engine off at operating temp -let engine oil drain into pan for a few minutes after engine is stopped before checking You can also check in the gauge cluster: Check by putting the key in the ignition and turning it to the on position (without turning the engine on) and leave it there for a few moments. Where the clock normally is you will see the oil level. If instead you see a countdown, it will display the oil level when countdown completes. if more than a few minutes then you are probably not at operating temp.
  12. +1 I was skeptical that cleaning the throttle body would really do anything... until I finally took a few minutes to do it. best return on time spent with the 996 so far. do it tonight!
  13. Sounds as though you need to clean the throttle body. There is a DIY on this site... Basically pull the airbox, and spray some carb cleaner in the throttle body and clean until everything is shiny inside... including the edges of the flapper itself edit: found the thread. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...e+body+cleaning easily accesible on the carrera, not sure on your car though. good luck.
  14. What about running 40mm offset up front? (I'm trying for some 996GT3 wheels on my 01C4. offset 40 front, 63 rear) Should only stick out 10mm each side further, right? I would think it would be barely noticeable. Besides looks, would handling/perf be affected at all? Any 996 narrow bodies already have some 18x8.5 offset40/18x11 offset 64 installed? pics?
  15. there is a story on another forum within the past few months... a cop who i believe has a 996. he got some jammer made in eastern europe if i remember corrct only 1 us distributor. he seemed very happy with it.
  16. 01 C4 6spd 72k miles 28+ 60-70mph i have seen 24 at 100mph on the streets gettin stupid I have gotten it down to 9mpg If I just let it average the whole tank I am usually around 16mpg
  17. there are a few posts on 6speed showing people who have done this... walk throughs and all. it does look nice. not sure of the difference, but I know there is a DNX8120 available. might as well get the latest, no?
  18. Thanks... that calc is cool, now I have to pull my wheels to find my current spec. But, in the spirit of gimme gimme now and laziness.... Maybe this will narrow down the possibilities: Will a 996 GT3 wheel fit correctly? It seems they are all 8.5 w/ 40offset & 11 w/ 63offset. Thanks
  19. I have looked and looked... found bits of info here and there, but nothing very definitive. I called up my dealer and they were pretty useless. I called up a couple of wheel shops and got two different answers.... great. So, is there a chart or a breakdown somewhere of the proper wheel offsets for the early 996 cars? I want to get some new shoes... would like to go 18" with 8.5 & 11 wide. Would really like to get the 996 GT3 wheels, but am still shopping around. It seems that a lot of it is preference on how you want it to look... BTW- this is for a U.S. 2001 Carrera 4 Coupe 6speed Thanks
  20. Definitely say something... anything with the brakes is worth fussing about. Hopefully they would rush you out the one rotor, then you can send the damaged one back.
  21. carrera... more people than I thought do know. besides, it is Spanish for race. how cool is that?
  22. If you know the city of Orange.... there is a station just West of the traffic circle... they sell higher octanes, but I think for 'off highway use only'.... I have been concerned about using in my Pcar because worried about damage from additives.
  23. 30 seconds??? is that the norm? Mine will usually last a few minutes
