  1. Loren, Can't find my radio code. '01 Boxster S CDR 220 4460 24/99 ser# 15088695 Many THanks, Peter
  2. Just an update. I ordered a rad cap, and a spare plastic igniition switch from one of the online Canadian parts places. I did receive the same cap as the black one pictured above. While my .00 blue cap wasn't leaking fluid , I could hear a bit of air venting around it a few weeks ago when I was at the grocery store (car off). It was a slight hissing sound, similiar to a pinhole leak in a tire. I'll keep an eye on the tank and monitor coolant levels over the next few weeks. Peter
  3. Just trying to get confirmation if the latest Porsche OEM cap (996.106.447.04) is black plastic instead of blue.... Not sure when they went from 03 to 04. No Porsche dealers within a 2hr round trip of me, so I'm likely going to order it online..... I noticed a light hissing sound a couple nights ago when getting some groceries outta trunk... Going to try the cap 1st. I have the .00 version still on my '01 BoxS Thx, Peter
  4. whale tail near Waterloo Ontario does Porsche only I believe... (junkyard), never dealt with them personally. Peter
  5. Great job. How tall are your Jack stands? I have the standard 16.75" ones. Just wondering if they would be tall enough to remove the tranny and get to the IMS? Thx Peter.
  6. The Front Crankshaft seal on my 2001 Boxster S is weeping a little bit of oil.... Not enough to actually drip on the garage floor. Just noticed a wet spot on the engine when I was doing an oil change on the weekend. I think part of it is the fact that my car sits for 4+ months in the winter when we have snow/slush and tons of SALT on the roads. - the seal may have dried out. Then again, I heard the Porsche engines seem to weep /leak a bit as a norm..... Anyone DIY? I've replaced fork seals on motorcycles with some macgyvered hand tools. Thanks, Peter
  7. it was under $20US inc. shipping to Canada... I got it on ebay.. Blaupunkt /becker cables work with the CDR220 P
  8. I got the removal keys from ebay. I found the radio very 'stiff' to pull out. Make sure u are pulling the radio out level (horizontally) or with maybe a slight downward angle or it won't budge. It took me quite a few tries, a few cuss words and sore fingers to get it to come out. I swear I was going to break it with all the tugging I did.... I think the angle of the tug is the most important... This was to get the aux becker cable into the back of my cdr-220 so I could ipod/iphone my tunes. Peter
  9. Finally got around to replacing it, the mount was totally failed. Notice any improvements in shifting since replacing the tranny mount? Peter
  10. Down on power? I got my '01 S in June. It has about 74,000km on the odometer. Just wondering if anyone has felt a performance increase when changing out an old for new filter? on any vehicle Apparently my '01S is not as peppy as it should be. A neighbor I met who also has a 986S said that his car is noticeably faster than mine (He's only driven mine for about 5 minutes). I haven't had a chance to drive his yet because he's currently working on his CV joints. My car isn't showing any CEL's, apparently has a drive-by-wire throttle. There is no hesitation or misfire. It idles fine. This indicates to me that the MAF and the TPS should both be fine, or else CEL's would appear. Yes the CEL dash light works, at least on startup. I have a generic OBDII scanner, but haven't scanned the boxster yet. My initial thoughts are really dirty airfilter? or dirty throttle body. One night, I had stopped into see my fellow Porsche brethren, and I had made the comment to my neighbor that the car was fairly fast, not kick in the @ss fast. It can get to 100kph easily in 2nd gear, just that there was no real excitement. Just a lot of noise. I'm used to fairly 'quick' vehicles, so maybe the Boxster S isn't supposed to blow me away. My rainy day / winter car / grocery getter is a 2001 Jetta 1.8T with APR chip. It's rated at about 210hp and probably weighs 33-3400lbs. My other fairweather vehicle is a 2000 Honda VFR800 sport-touring motorcycle - probably 80hp and 500lbs. I would say may Boxster S accelerates about the same as my Jetta, maybe a touch faster. By the numbers, I think my Jetta should do sub-7's for 0-60mph, and the Box S should be in the sub-6 category...... My butt dynometer can't really tell the difference between the 2. Both my cars feel fast after spending the weekend driving my wife's 2003 CRV stick. I stopwatched the CRV a month ago coming home from the cottage, and with 2 kids, wife and dog in the vehicle, it did 0-60mph from a rolling start in about 13-15seconds..... How much hp do u think I can lose in a Box S if it is in-fact a dirty airfilter?
  11. I read on here to use a thin allen key (think about 4mm or so) to push the latch in on the buckle receiver until it clicks. This is what I have been doing since installing the 'bar' Works great. In fact, I usually just have the passenger airbag off, as I never have an adult in the front seat. as 99.9% of the time I have a passenger in the car it's one of my 2 kids. If I get in a front fender bender (heaven forbid). I at least save the pass. airbag. P P
  12. I have Pedro's enthusiast mount. The vibration is a bit more than I'd like, but the price was very good. I don't have anything really to compare it to, as this is my 1st Boxster S, and I've only test driven one other Boxster (non-S). I replaced my OEM mount about 3 weeks into my ownership, as I was having problems shifting. It has helped with that. My boxster is noisier with Pedro's mount, and more vibration is felt, especially in the 3000rpm range. Peter 2001 Box S
  13. Most Starting Car batteries have a fairly high reserve capacity or amp-Hour rating.... Most modern radar detector draw minimal current, but if your battery was marginal, I guess it could drain it in a week. A multimeter should read between 12.6-12.8V an hour or 2 after u turn off the car if it is close to 100%... 12.0V would be a pretty flat battery.
  14. i tried claying it with the mother's system last night... didn't really remove it. I'm going with the top sealant overspray as my diagnosis at the moment..... I also have some Scratch X and may try that next time I give the full car a wash.... I've got some Raggtop, Optimum No Rinse, and some Waffle Weave MF towels on order..... I didn't realize until after the Porsche that synthetic chamois were no longer the preferred method to dry a vehicle. I've had mine for the past 10+ yrs.....
  15. Hi All, Overall the paint on my new to me '01 Box S is in great shape for an 8 yr old car. Everything is smooth to the touch, except for along the nose of the car due to stone chips appropriate to the age and mileage of the car. I however do notice that the top couple inches of each door panel, the paint feels 'rough' under the finger tips. I may break out the old claybar and run it along there a couple times with the appropriate lube. It almost feels like there are microscopic mist of tree sap or something else sticky that fell onto the car along time ago and has been embedded into the paint. I wonder if the proximity to the side mirrors has anything to do with it, and the mirror concentrating the suns rays on that area and baking the contaminant's in. The car is black, and the paint looks fine to me, even in sunlight, just feels rough along the top few inches of both door panels... P
  16. usaf... couple mods to consider.... I've been using similiar ramps for 10+ yrs..... - Set your circular saw for a 45degree miter.... that might make it a little easier to back up onto.... - it's quite snug working on a 4 layer 2x10 setup ramp.... when I did the motor mount with my 01 S, it was doable, but close quarters..... u can't reach over your body very well underneath the car.... (just to note... 2 x dimensional lumber is actually only 1.5" thick.... similarly the 10" side I believe is only 9.5") - over a 6.5' run, u should be able to get a 6 layer ramp fairly easily.... my 4 layer setup is only 3' long maybe? - i'm 5'10 and 185lbs for size comparison.
  17. I just replaced my motor mount with Pedro's enthusiast mount. Everything went fairly smoothly. had to lower the engine a few inches to get a couple bolts off. This was on Monday night. Weather has been rainy lately, so not good boxster weather. However, I've begun to notice a whine from the engine compartment. Not sure if this is just a harmonic amplified by the stiffer mount, or if it's a symptom of something wrong.... Far as I can tell, the whine sounds like a differential (or what a bad diff might sound like) , but it also happens at a standstill with the car in neutral. I think it might be a belt/pulley issue. The whine increases in tone with the engine revs., but not with wheel speed, so I doubt it's transmission/wheel related. Any thoughts? Thanks, Peter
  18. Pedro's enthusiast motor mount arrived sometime last week at the post office. I had a chance to install it last night. Couple notes on working on the boxster. (1st time under the car, only got it less than 4 weeks ago) - wood ramp made of 4 layers of 2x10's is a bit tight to work under. Going to make an extension of a couple more layers to jack the rear end up higher, will need to make a shallow 2 layer 2x10 ramp for the front tires so the front bumper doesn't bottom out. - I tightened all the 15mm bolts to about 50-60lbft of torque. (didn't use a torque wrench, didn't find the torque values on Pedro's site) - there are a lot of fasteners for the plastic shield underneath the car. To get the shield off closest to the motor mount, u probably should undo a couple of the fasteners on the shield ahead - closest to the one u are working on. It will give u some more wiggle room to wiggle out the shield u want to remove. - the head of the stud that holds the yoke to the chassis is actually 7mm (not 6mm as stated on Pedrosgarage) - the nut fasteners that hold the plastic shields on are 10mm. the screws on my car that held the plastic shield on are phillips. - my original mount had not quite totally separated yet. There looked to be tears in the rubber in the mount, but the tears had not yet gone through the entire rubber section. My mount was still in one piece. I would say the biggest tear went about 75% of the way through the rubber. The tear was along the outer circumference of the rubber. - check really well underneath the car before coming off the ramps. I looked and removed the cardboard that I was lying on to check for the shield fasteners with a trouble lamp, but when I got the car off, I noticed that I have 2 extra phillips screws/washers that I missed somewhere...... back up onto the ramp I go I guess tonight :( Quick 10 minute driving impressions - there is buzz with the motor mount.... more than the 75% failed OE part. - buzz seems centered around the 3000rpm range.... I did not get a chance to check if it is only when accelerating/deccelerating that has the buzz. I didn't get a chance to hold a steady 3000rpm in 6th to determine what it would be like at speed (dark and the roads were wet) - shifting is much improved, both in upshifting thru the gears, and downshifting into 3rd :) - a bit notchy getting back into 1st when at a stop sign. - bit of whitish smoke (smelled like oil) after getting the car off the ramps on the initial start and for about 30-60seconds afterward. No smoke noted on the 10min drive, or when i pulled back into the garage I'm hoping it's just that some oil got up in the heads while the engine was being on the angle, and wiggled around when I was r/r'ing the mount.
  19. I had Pirelli P-zeros (N3 version?). couple wearbars showing at the front, and the rears may have lasted the summer...... Nothing else needed for the safety.... my PPI revealed that the brakes were about 70% remaining in the front, and maybe 50% in the rear...... P
  20. I have the plastic window. I'm new to the boxster world. I had assumed that just leaving it down in the garage would be better, rather than adding a close-then-open cycle with respect to wear 'n tear on the roof..... P
  21. I feel safe where I live and work. I was just wondering, how many of u park with the top down in public if just running in to get something at the store, or pick up a movie rental, out for dinner? I leave the top down at home in the garage , if I know it can be topdown weather for the morning commute. At work, it's outdoor parking, so I usually put the top up while I'm at work. If just out and about, I've been leaving the top down in public if parking outside the store that I'm heading into. I just put the ipod in the center console thing, and tuck the RDD under the seat, and roll the windows up.... and lock the doors via the key fob. Too bad the infrared detection doesn't work with the top down......
  22. man, you call yourself cheap but spend $1000 on tires and Hankooks even! Could have had it done for $600 including a Hunter Road Force balance! Unfortunately those 17" buns won't fit on my 18" rims.... that's the going price at local tireshops in the area (Canada) ..... I was hoping to get my car safetied, and maybe do a tirerack etc. purchase and ship them to Buffalo, and drive down to have them installed, but I needed new tires ASAP, and didn't think driving back across the border in an unregistered car was a good idea.... Next time, I need 4 tires, I'll get them from the states. P
