  1. I'm not sure that oil leaking from what looks like the oil cooler would make that gurgling sound. check out other threads on the forum. How's the coolant level? Have you put on the updated 997 reservoir cap? glad you found the vacuum line leak. Good luck.
  2. add that to the list of "mysterious Porsche tricks." This has been a fun discussion to follow, aber sein viel larm uber nichts wirklich. Cheers,
  3. no, I don't think so. the C4$ has turbo brakes and running gear, which I believe are a bit larger than the Boxster's. I think the minimum rear rim for the C4$ is 285-18.
  4. Agree. Same principles apply when changing out household bulbs to led's. sometimes sockets, rheostats and other switches also need to be changed. note that the issue may be with the instrument panel lighting rheostat. Try turning brightness up and down all the way and see what happens. good luck.
  5. Correct! Ahsai wins the day! In my car the Bose subwoofer shelf needed to come off first. There is a noticeable difference when starting engine. thanks again for the responses. jl
  6. New starter in today. And a new relay as well. And a new battery. I'm picking up car tomorrow. Inde says much improved crank. Porsche quiz for all y'all: Where is the relay and how do you get to it? Bonus question: where is the aux fuse panel and how do you get to it? I now know the answers. Cheers,
  7. Exactly same noise. I tried for days to get the sound on a video to post up, but it just didn't happen anytime on a cold or hot start. I have not heard the sound since my post of Oct 8. But it was there and I thought it best to just replace the starter. I think most of us like to take care of things on a proactive and prophylactic basis. A Porsche is of course expensive to maintain, but I think an ounce of prevention is better than the proverbial pound of cure. Cheers,
  8. Update: I have not noticed the problem for a few weeks, but a new starter is going in this week. thanks again for the comments. Cheers, jl
  9. Yes, indeed. The Durametric folks note this on the website. I had an issue many years ago in loading the software, and Duram held my hand and walked me through it. Note also that Durametric does not run on OS. Lots of folks, myself included, have partitioned a small portion the OS op sys to run PC software. Bootcamp works well for this. I have done this on my MacBook Air. You can partition OS just enough to allow you to run Windows and then download and use Durametric. I'm pretty sure I'm running Windows 7 for this. Works great. Cheers,
  10. Right. And the settlement only included reimbursement for failed engines. Those of us who had done a prophylactic LNE retrofit for peace of mind and then attempted to join the class were ".... out of luck." That said, referencing an earlier post on the IMS, it is a definite must to do the LNE. Well worth the cost, imho.
  11. Greetings, I believe this is a no-brainer. Do either of the IMS right away. How much is peace of mind worth? I did the LNE upgrade at about 35k, and plan to do another near 75k. Alternatively, I may do the oil fed bearing. Not sure yet. But, the fix must be done for peace of mind. It's simply not worth the risk and the cost is likely under 2k. This is a Porsche, it will cost. There was a similar issue with the 911 SC 3.0 air cooled engine, probably the best ever made by Porsche. The Achilles heel was the timing chain tensioner. They were sealed, and would virtually destroy the engine if one lost pressure and failed. The solution was an oil-fed tensioner. That solved the problem and was incorporated into the subsequent Carrerra 3.2 engines 1984 onward. So, doing a mandatory retrograde fix is not unique to Porsche. Get it done and avoid those sleepless nights. PS: I think the class-action lawsuit against Porsche over the IMS is now officially closed. Cost Porsche some bucks to take care of it. Cheers,
  12. great. good find. your area does get a little bit warm. Consider adding Water Wetter to coolant if any topping up is needed.
  13. seems ok for now. noise has not reoccured yet this week. good inde instantly agreed with diagnosis of starter issue. will pull starter at major service due in a few k miles, and likely replace with new.
  14. check the search engine. I've read there somewhere that the entire cluster might have to be replaced. The lights I believe are individually changeable. someone on the forum will surely know all about this. good luck.
  15. Thanks to the 996 regulars crew. I'm calling inde tomorrow. After posting I've been recording both cold/hot starts, and, of course, the issue has not repeated. I do think it's worth taking a look at the starter.
  16. great price. I replaced an idler pulley a few years ago, making a loud whining sound. (Info only: $52 OEM from Sunset. Part #996 102 119 58.) glad your able to get a reasonably priced replacement bearing.
  17. Friends, I've searched the forum on this issue, but no posts I found addressed this issue. On the first cold start of the day I'm hearing a brief "grinding" sound from the engine. Comes on after the starter kicks in and engine is turning over. Very brief grinding sound. I think it's coming from the right side of the engine, but not sure. Does not occur when engine is warmed up after car has been driven around, at least not yet. This does not sound like known and addressed issues of air pump, belts, or tappets. 2003 C4$. Anyone experienced anything like this? Thanks in advance. Will contact inde next week.
  18. yes, exactly. just another entry on that vast list of "unknown and mysterious Porsche things." another, and the one I really hate, is when the CDR 223 (Becker) radio mysteriously doesn't work and only displays Porsche on the screen. Takes shutting off engine, pulling key, reinserting key and restarting engine for the radio/cd to work again. Sometimes I can get it back by putting in and then taking out a cd. Or the cd will play but all the sound settings for both cd and radio have defaulted to 0. but the worst is probably the infamous and horrendous air-bag light trick, when the air bag comes on when starting the car for no reason. Then it becomes pull-out the Durametric time. MPS....mysterious Porsche s.... Cheers, j
  19. A comment was recently posted about how the auto door locking feature at about 3 mph is stupid. Might be. But I do think it has some good features if always driving in congested city traffic. Might prevent an unwanted intruder from jerking open the door to rob you. That said, I know the door locking feature can be re-programmed at a dealer with a PIWIS. Question: I have never given it much thought, but can the door locking features be addressed with my Durametric? Anyone ever tried that?
  20. 5 min for the lights to stay on after closing the doors without locking is not unusual. I think they actually stay on for a much longer time. I never really liked the auto lock door feature. But it could be handy when driving in traffic in a "not so friendly" city , area to prevent someone jerking your door open to do unfriendly things, like robbing you. My car was pre-programmed with the auto lock, and I have never thought it worth the money to have a dealer do any reprogramming work. I might just start a thread with a question about this. Thanks for your unsolicited comment. Good luck on getting your car properly fixed to your satisfaction.
  21. When you lock the doors the lights go off, right? The lights will stay on a long time after the doors are closed. Eventually they should go off. The dash lights and footwells stay on when the driver door is closed. I think only the footwell lights come on when the passenger door is closed. If the lights are not going off until the car is locked, do they go off when you drive over 3 mph and the doors auto lock? There must be a rheostat or similar electronic timer that controls the auto turning off of those lights. I would have no idea where, but it might be worth checking that out. Good luck.
  22. As perhaps a final thought, what are you planning to do? Replace the tumbler, or the entire lock mechanism? there are some DIY posts on both replacements, but both are a bit advanced for me to tackle. good luck on whatever you decide to do.
