  1. Have you tried this? I think you'll get a lot more than a cup of oil coming out. He's exactly right. I overfilled once and this is a method to remove small quantities of oil, basically a 1/3 of the housing capacity.
  2. Had to fix horn bushes yesterday (filled with high temp silicone-works great),and consequently had to disconnect negative lead to the battery. So when I went to input radio code to reactivate it, the first number starts flashing on/off etc. I repeated this process three times and it keeps returing to the first number. The number is correct ( I'm reading in off a card found in the folder with manual etc etc) Is there something I'm missing? Jason 99 c2 911
  3. The wiper washer fliud warning came on the other day, so I duly refilled it and left the cap off overnight to allow any air trapped by the new fliud to escape. This hasn't extinguished the light which is the only light on during driving. Is there anything else I can do? Does anything nedd to be reset or checked etc. Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have- I have a c2 996 911. Jason
  4. Hi- I was wondering if there is a DIY for flushing out old coolant from my 99 C2? Thank you Jason
  5. Excellent Richard, very well covered. Just a question, what is the brand of that nice looking torque wrench? Thanks again Jason
  6. Ok Thanks - but I'm a tad confused now. Are you saying this sensor monitors both the air temperature of the engine compartment AND the coolant temperature ? (it does have 4 wires I have noticed). If so, how can it monitor the air when it's almost at the bottom of the engine - surely the sensor should be at the top near the lid ? (not that I'm doubting you - just doesn't make much sense..) Also, I assume if I replace the whole sensor - I'll need to catch the coolant as I assume I'll make a hole in the block when removed ! Thanks - almost there I think ... Richard. Further update - I called Porsche East London to find out the cost of the engine coolent thermostat (£11.27 btw) and they advised that there is a 2nd sensor as I suspected called the 'Ambient Temperature Sensor'. (Great service from Porsche East London parts department - thumbs up) It is located in the plastic inlet manifold on the right hand side of the engine. I've been told that it sometimes pops out of it's mounting and causes this problem. Reseating it should solve the problem. This sensor is only £14.71 but they said they haven't ordered one for 3 years so sounds very reliable. I'm at work at the moment so will check this tonight and report back ... Hopefully this is the problem ... Cheers, Richard. I made a mistake. The sensor in the lower picture IS NOT the engine compartment sensor. I didn't look at the picture close enough yesteday to see the coolant hose. That is the temperature sending unit for the coolant. The sensor you are looking for is located on bank 2 (right side of engine) on top, between the middle and back intake shown in the first picture above. It is a 2 wire sensor and your can remove it by sliding ut out towards the right fender. Sorry for the mixup. And YES, it can fall off and sit on top of the manifold, raising the temperature it reads. Resolved ! - Thanks to all - It was indeed the sensor that had fallen off and was resting on the engine block itself. It fits in the first gap between the first two inlet manifolds on the right hand side of the engine - took some pictures to assist if anybody else has the same problem :- 1. I traced the wires going into the inlet manifolds and pulled out ... 2. I tried to fit it into the holder but found it too tight and didn't want to foce it. Therefore, I took out the sender from the grommit, used some WD40 on the grommit and slid that in first... 3. Then it pushed the sender unit into the grommit from underneath until it clicked into place. 4. A picture of the sender poking it's nose into the air taking the ambient air temperature - as it should be ! Cheers, Richard. Fantastic illustrative description. I'm going to run down now just to look and see if that thing is poking up through the manifold!
  7. The battery is only 18 minths old, but curiously it was hard to start the other day. It cranked quite a few times before firing. Another thing, would the fact that the car sits ,say a maximum of 14 days at a time, affect the battery? Thanks again guys Jason
  8. I'm not really sure about the Boxster, you'd probably get a better answer from Loren. The main reason I took the fuse out was that if I just locked the car with the key, the alarm would automatically re-arm itself. So I thought I'll just leave the doors closed and lock the garage door. The problem with this is that the interior door light would remain on, so I took the fuse out which is also for the alarm circuit. The car is now not armed, but theres no lights on which would have run the battery down over time. Have a look in the little code book which is housed in the fuse box cover which is located in the foot well on the 996.I'll be taking her into the Porsche people asap. Jason
  9. Asked the Rennlist fellows about this and they suggested either racoons or a car going by with a loud bass blaring. Neither of these are possible and it is still going off, sometimes in the middle of the night! So I have taken out the fuse, Row C Pos 3, but I've got no idea why its doing it. Its been quietly sitting in the garage now for 18 months, and nothing can get access to it. Any ideas :(
  10. Dell, Very nice. Two questions: The bumper color looks different to the fenders and bonnet. The reason I ask is that you can see in my pic the difference in color. Also, are they O2 5 spoke wheel 18''? I've always liked them. Did they just fit straight on or did you have to add a spacer or make any adjustments? Thanks Jason P.S. I couldn't see the cost of the GT3 bumper...?
  11. DeLL, Can I see some sort of chin spoiler on your car? If so where did you get it? Looks gooood! Jason
  12. Dell, Is your color Arena Red? If so you definitlely have good taste!
  13. All of the symptoms here are confusing. I 've always thought that if an engine blows smoke at high revs ,it always indicates worn piston rings. The oil indicated in the picture, if I'm looking at what I think it is, is a leak from the cam-cover.I've had this on my 99 996 and it looks similar. Good-luck Jason
  14. After becoming a contortionist whilst changing the ignition switch and nearly killing the cat with the shear frustration of it all, it happened again :cursing: ie when I turn the ignition key to the left and pull it out, the engine doesn't shut off. However when I switch off the lights ,the engine cuts out!! :cursing: Please don't tell me I've got to get under there again! What is the connection-mechanical/electrical or otherwise between the ignition key lock /switch area and the light switch? (ie Headlights etc) TIA Jason (98 996 C2)
  15. After about an hours driving in about 26 deg C heat and with the A/C on,I arrived home and parked the car (996) as I was walking away,I looked back and noticed a fluid dripping near the left front wheel. On inspection it looked and tasted!! like water. My question is is this the A/C? I'm not even sure if its in this area
  16. Does someone have a picture of the throttle body? My 99 has intermittent rough idling, so this may be the cause. Cheers and Merry Xmas
  17. Thanks Loren-it is a 98.Also, would you know roughly the cost of a rubber seal-rear (98 996 carrera coupe) Thanks again Jason
  18. Hello, Recently at my 40k(kms) service, I asked the service manager if he could glue down the bottom left corner of the rear screen rubber. When I came back he replied to that short of replacing the whole rubber, nothing could be done. The problem is is that if you glued or sealed it in any way it would trap water or debris inside. It sort of sounded logical, but does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the rubber to sit down properly. Its not a huge problem, but to me it stands out like you know what!! Thanks, Jason
  19. Orient, Sorry to labour the point, but those stands in the last picture don't look all that stable. It looks like the contact points are at the jaws of the stand, the lower part of the saddle has nothing on it. It just makes me feel a little nervous looking at it. Does the car feel very steady and stable with this set up? Have you done it this way for a while? Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I'm worried that if you were under it and someone came up and lent on the car, it might rock off the stands!!! I thought maybe placing them under a cross-member somewhere would be better? By the way, excellent pics and beautiful underbody. Would eat my dinner off it!! -Jason
  20. Gary, From the above picture, could you point out exactly where to place the jack? You provided very good insturction. Still want to make sure not to make a expensive mistake. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ditto the above-I have "u" shaped stands, so I need to know exactly where to put them-Thanks Jason
