  1. Might have to shellac that and hang it from the Xmas tree  I can't wait to see what that inside of the engine looks like. mike
  2. Bought a Boxster whose "oil sprung" -- '99 Tip 2,5L with 92.5K miles on it -- Other than engine issues -- it's in very good condition. I happened to have an engine of the same model -- so price was too good to pass up. put Angel on the lift last night and the IMS bolt was staring back down at us! Here's some fun pictures fo you guys.... IMS Failure == IMS Bolt poking through hole between flywheel and transmission Carnage caught by the oil filter My first solo work -- pulled the bumper, exhaust and disconnected the coolant hoses..... ready for engine and transmission removal Transplant -- waiting for some refurbishment and an IMS retrofit enjoy, Mike Lone Star RPM LLC
  3. i'm still trying to figure the benefits of this upgrade. m
  4. More importantly it looks like the Turbo cam are both on the same side. that seems like it would be less torque on the IMS as well as less mass. All should help any bearing issues. probably less play in the gears vs chain as well mike
  5. I have both 99x and 98x sets from PorscheLibrarian They have been very helpful and appreciated. PM him for pricing. m
  6. Is it easier to raise the engine by modifying the housing top area? m
  7. 996 3.4L or a Cayman 3.4L? The 996 3.$L uses a 7.2DME -- do I believe they are the same for the Boxster and 996 up to 2000 I think. You're have to wait for someone with swapping experience for more details. Mike
  8. There is a used 6 speed tranny on Ebay for about $2k (US), not sure how much it would cost to ship it. It's from a 996, but believe it will work with a 3.2L S engine. m
  9. Took 2 of us about 3 hours to do both rear axles -- complete CV Boot, grease, o-ring replacements. Messy, tedious, somewhat of a pain in the arse -- but not hard. m
  10. Seems like a stretch to me. The theory would have to be that the additional weight allowed the crankshaft to be ever so closer to the IMS that it allowed the IMS to have some more "wiggle" room. but that would mean the chain tensioners were also not working properly. m
  11. All M96 engines have an IMS regardless of transmission type. It is what drives the timing chains for each camshaft pair. m
  12. bummer -- wish I had read this when I was at the shop earlier tonite -- I have a 04 3.6L sitting on a pallet. I should get out there this weekend -- is there anything specific you are looking for? M
  13. I would offer the guy $1000 less than what you planned -- then take that money and get the LnEngineering IMS retrofit with it! m
  14. Glad it worked out for you -- do you have pix of the crack? Just wait ~2k miles & you'll really be having a blast and truly be able to pat your self on the back. good motoring, m
  15. Glad to see it was 1) real 2) you paid attention 3) you figured out what was wrong and fixed it! happy Boxstering..... And as far as the Aircraft analogy -- they expect to repair/replace engines at regular intervals -- not what you expect from a vehicle. Also while the water temp might not boil off until > 212 degrees F, your oil viscosity will be affected by elevated temperatures and this could cause more wear than non-elevated temperatures...... m
  16. consider the IMS retrofit from LnEngineering. mike
  17. Your window goes on the other side of the bottom clip. It takes a little persuasion to coax it into place. If you get a little rattle -- I put some foam tape around the pins that fit into the upper clips, and a very little strip on the bottom clip. Happy Boxstering..... M
  18. Pull and replace engine is 20-25 hours, valve spring, and valve job, plus new head gasket should be < 1k. At a moderate indy -- that should be $3k max wish you were closer to Austin we'd be happy to help! m
  19. I would replace the water pump (cheap enough relative to what you have listed) I would replace filters (oil/fuel/air)nnn Check RMS, upgrade IMS. replace clutch (or at least give it a good inspection) check the coolant tank m
  20. Weather it "smells hot" or not -- I would definitely look into this -- you've got a warning sign -- heed it -- HEAT is not your friend. Even if all seems good, oil breakdown, engine wear, fatigue -- all are increased with elevated temps. m
  21. Sounds like something catastrophic. Sounds like something broke inside the engine preventing you from turning the crank..... could be IMS or D-Chunk
  22. If you can get access to a duramatic -- it can be used to individually turn on the fans. m
  23. I'm guessing -- if its not the radiators being dirty -- check to make sure all the engine and radiator fans are working properly. Sometimes a thermostat can stick and not open completely -- but I haven't heard that with these cars. m
  24. i've been digging around haven't found what I need yet. reason I am asking is I can get my hands on a 3.4S Cayman engine.. and wanted to know what the possibilities are..... I thought the 7.8s allowed a more advanced vario cam .. so that a 2007 engine would not be stimated properly with am earlier dme.... maybe that is only 997 engines??? not 987s... that being said ... I wonder if the 2007 would run well enough if using and earlier dme.... thx for the help i'll keep surfing.... m
