  1. Not a dumb idea at all - how about this: http://sotar.it/eng/home.htm
  2. Some while ago I stumbled across this article, but only just got round to trying it today: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int6.shtml It shows how to use the aircon diagnostics in the control unit which was manufactured by Audi. The diagnostics part isn't a great deal of use, but one useful tip is how to change the aircon display from °C to °F, and vice-versa. To quote the article: Changing Degree Temperature Display Press and hold the recirculation button. Then press the temperature up ("+") button to switch between degrees Celsius & Fahrenheit on the Climate Control. Why this isn't in the owners manual, I have no idea!
  3. I have one that (I think) covers 1997 models. Trouble is, it's 47Mb, so it would be difficult to post here, and I don't have anywhere to host a file of this size for you to download. If you send me a PM maybe we can work something out to cover the cost of postage (from the UK) if I burn it to a CD.
  4. Jim I have the AutoXray EZ-Scan 5000. A bit pricey at $380, but it is excellent. You can download the data to a PC and print out graphs, etc. It is CAN compliant too. I think the Actron CP9135 is just a code reader and is $110 at Midway Auto Supply. The CP9145 scans live data, and is about $199 at Midway.
  5. I think I have found that out. The light I am getting covers a wider area close to the car, but the distance vision isn't much better than standard. The 'cut-off' isn't as sharp as it used to be, either. The HID bulbs are 55mm long (base to tip), and the standard H7 halogen bulbs are 42mm. I think it might be that the HID bulbs are too far forward of the focal point of the lens, and are causing the beam to be out of focus. Has anyone else had this expreience?
  6. The new liner conversions in the Autofarm rebuilds are made by Perfect Bore. Details at: http://www.perfectbore.com/watercooled.htm . It's a nice idea to go to 3.8 litres, bur when you start adding up the price of the parts it's an expensive exercise.
  7. Thanks Mike - yes, they are aftermarket. I'm not too concerned about the look of the lights, just the quality (and quantity) of light. I realise that they won't be as good as the Porsche Litronic kit, but they must be significantly better than halogens. I've heard lots of good things about these kits (hid-online.com) from 993 owners on UK forums, and can't recall any comments about lens burnout. Can you point me in the direction of burnout issues, as I can't find any here?
  8. With the clocks about to change, and the evenings getting dark so early, I have been thinking about doing this myself. In my research, I spoke to Tech9 who retrofit a kit which is about 950GBP plus fitting to give 'close to original' litronics with level sensors, etc. I am going to go for a kit from www.hid-online.com which is 335GBP and do it myself. A cheaper option was www.hids4u.co.uk at £225, but I hate using companies that don't put their address on the web site, and they didn't pick up the phone on the three occasions I called them.
  9. I looked at the wiring diagrams and it looks like a piece of cake to wire it up on the 02 and later cars. The cruise controls are in the instrument cluster, unlike the earlier cars that are controlled by the DME. Therefore it would appear that you could just fit the stalk and it would be a simple job to wire it into the cluster. The reason for asking is that a friend of mine is looking to buy a 2002 car, but really wants cruise. If he finds the right car without cruise, he wants to try retrofitting.
  10. Loren I was looking through the 996 manual (Diagnostics part 2, 90-D132 page3) which shows the coding instructions for the instrument cluster, and came across the following: "Cruise Control: This menu item enables the instrument cluster to be coded after replacing the instrument cluster or after retrofitting a cruise-control actuator." There is another reference to coding after retrofitting the OBC. This being the case, I would have thought that Porsche would have issued a TSB about retrofitting. Do you know if they have done?
  11. "porschelibrarian" is a member this forum. The manual has the updates and supplements up to February 2004.
  12. The PST2 will give you extra information about the frequency of the fault, but ar3870 is right, you need to check the Porsche OBDII Manual for details of what to check. Unlike the code reader or scanner, the PST2 will also interrogate all the other control modules.
  13. This Boxster Workshop Manual CD recently sold on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=8005597190 The price was $185. This manual is exactly the same as the one offered by workshopmanuals.co.uk for only $20. The seller says it covers up to 2004, but in fact only covers 97-01. Someone has been severely ripped off, and I feel sorry for them. I don't want any of you guys to make the same mistake. How do I know it's the same thing? I fixed the index for workshopmanuals. The quality of this CD isn't brilliant, but it is a good starting point for the DIYer, and at $20 you can't complain. However, I recently got a 996 manual from "porschelibrarian" and it is in a different league, much better quality. Be warned of the eBay rip-offs!
  14. On mine I had some play in the ends of the anti-roll bar drop links (item 19) which caused a 'clonking' sound over bumps, particularly when warm. Replacements were not too expensive. I also had a squeaking/groaning sound, which was simply lack of lubrication of the anti-roll bar rubber bushes (item 17). Some silicone spray solved that one.
  15. Sorry, didn't see all your photos at first  (posted duplicate photo) Very Nasty!
  16. Well, we had a frustrating day. I think the cruise will work OK, but the problem is the indicator light on the instrument cluster. This car has the later cluster with the new OBC display, and is radically different to the 2001 cluster. The wire which connects between Plug IV, pin 18, of the DME and Plug I, pin 16, of the cluster is not activating the cruise light. Also Fuse B7 is blowing occasionally. Obviously the connection to the cluster is wrong. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2002, showing the DME and Instrument Cluster connections?
  17. Tomorrow, I'm to help a friend with a 2002 2.7 Boxster cruise control retrofit. Is there anything we should be aware of that is different to Ed B's instructions?
  18. Amongst other things, I have an Autoxray EZ-Scan 5000 which works well on my 98 996 C2. Other cars I have tried it on where it works well are an Audi TT and a Subaru Impreza WRX. A Merc A Class won't connect at all, and on a Peugeot 206 GTI it will read fault codes, but will scan a very limited range of sensor values. Overall, however, it is a good tool, and I bought it as it is CAN protocol compliant. If you are ever in the area, I'd be happy to demo it.
  19. There is an outfit in England ( http://www.perfectbore.com ) who make big bore cylinder blocks and pistons for the Boxster/996. There was a write up in this month's 911 & Porsche World about Autofarm in the UK who are doing a kit to go up to 3.8 litres. Pricey, though.
  20. Chris Where are you in the UK? I may be able to help - PM me.
  21. There was a guy on the UK PCGB forum with a similar problem, see: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=125090 He contacted Wilhelmy, and they told him to return it for exchange. I would suggest getting in touch with them
  22. If he did I bet he had words with the guy who nudged him off!
  23. I had the same problem on mine, and changed the plastic holder. What shocked me was the price of this item - (from memory) it was about 20GBP - that's about 34USD! I thought at first that I would change both while I had the roof strip off, but soon changed my mind!
  24. I use Zaino Leather Cleaner Z-9 and Leather Conditioner (Leather in a Bottle) Z-10. Works great and smells fantastic. http://www.zainostore.com/ (No affilliation)
