  1. I have helped a number of people with their 3.4 swaps so I decided they were getting too common. Also anyone can buy a boxster with a 3.4 from the dealer now, so time to try something new :P . Hmm wonder what is in the box??? Looks like a 2005 3.6L engine. Should be fun. Todd
  2. You are correct on all your assignments, #4 is oil level/temp sender Todd
  3. The easiest way to do the swap is to have the DME reprogrammed for the 996 engine, so you might as well as have a performance program put in for the same $$ Todd
  4. You really don't need a boxster S front bumper. You can cut yours and use the Boxster S grill and duct if you are looking to save some $$. Todd
  5. I wouldn't recommend doing the swap without the center rad. The factory deemed it necessary with the 3.2, you are putting in the 3.4. I ran my car for a bit without the rad and it ran a bit warm in my climate during the summer (summer temps around 90+ average). In california I would be even more concerned. You won't necessarily see the coolant temp climb but the oil temps will be hotter than you want. The complete rad kit can be had from Porsche for under $400. The sachs sport clutch will hold up just fine, the 996 clutch/flywheel won't work as I believe the bellhousing on the 5 speed is too small. A lightweight flywheel is really up to you, it is noisier than the dual mass unit at idle and you will have to decide if the noise is worth the performance increase to you. Sorry to say but your used motor is not worth too much unless you find the right buyer at the right time. I would say somewhere areound $2k. Todd
  6. Are you clearing the codes before you swap the parts and retest the setup? To test the vacuum valves rather than swap them around simply hook them up to 12V. This causes the valve to open. When open you should be able to blow throw the valve. When closed you should not be able to pass air through the valve. Todd
  7. Ok, maybe I have the year wrong for the boxster. The issue with the 3.6 and the Cayman 3.4 engine is control of the Variocam plus in these engines. I believe they require the DME 7.8 which was introduced on the 2002 996. I assumed the 2002 Boxster also was updated to 7.8 but I guess it didn't happen til 2003. Todd
  8. Not into a pre-2002 car. You will have the same issues with electronics as you would with a 3.6 into the earlier cars. The later ones sure, but with a later car why not at least go with a 3.6. There really aren't any 'issues' with the 996 based 3.4 Todd
  9. The valve above the alt. is for the resonance valve on the intake. The valve you are interested in is mounted to the engine case as shown below circled in red. Todd
  10. 996 flywheel won't fit, the 986 sachs sport clutch works just fine Todd
  11. Yep, and those are the engines you want to stick into a non-egas boxster, otherwise you will be looking for a non-egas 996 throttle body or converting your boxster to egas. Todd
  12. No, that is a DME for an egas car. The DME you want is from a 996 but as stated above it is the same part as your boxster, that is 996 618 601 04. Since both cars have the same dme, I would assume the dealer should be able to program it with the PST either to the configuration for a 996 or a 986. If they won't, stick it in a box and ship it to one of the many places that will reprogram it. They are all over europe and north america. Todd
  13. It isn't a euro bumper cover. If you buy a new bumper cover from Porsche it won't have the holes hacked in it for the brackets for the pads. Todd
  14. Depending on who you go with, somewhere in the range of $1000-1500. This also gives you the ability to have the dme programmed to more aggressive settings for the same price. Todd
  15. The '99 996 and boxster used the same DME just programmed differently. If you use your DME you will need to have it configured for the 996 engine. Pretty standard, remove it and ship it to someone to do this. If you use the 996 DME you will have to have it matched to the driveblock computer in your car or it won't function. I am guessing this is a worldwide feature of the cars and not a north america specific thing. I think this can be done with a PST2. If the cars in Spain don't have driveblock then you could just swap in a non egas 3.4L DME. Todd
  16. The opening of the lids is a mechanical linkage, however the central locking system locks out the levers so they cannot be raised if the battery goes dead. On a boxster I don't know how you are going to get access to the battery post on the engine if the battery is dead, since the top needs to go into service position. You possibly could get the engine cover off from inside the car with the top up, but it is easier to use a low voltage supply to the fuse Tool Pants mentions, or use a modified cigarette adapter and supply voltage to the car through the cigarette lighter. You need very little voltage to allow you to actuate the central locking with the key in the door to release the locks on the lid levers, and thus allow you access to the battery. Todd
  17. Yes the data is coming from the ECU, the IAT comes from the MAF sensor Todd
  18. Sounds like you have the original version of the PET that is all over the internet. You can buy the legal version from Porsche for $15 and it will work on any computer that can read a pdf. Todd
  19. Before doing any welding on a DME car you should disconnect the DME from the harness and disconnect the battery. If it were me I would remove the exhaust. Cheap insurance. Todd
  20. So I have an Evo 'cold air intake' modified a bit to seal it off from engine air and mate to the 3.4. I hooked up my laptop to the car while driving to see what the temp of the incoming air is. Well with the car sitting at the light and an ambient temp of 30F, the incoming air is ~68F. I'm sure the longer it would sit the higher it would go. When moving at a steady 80 mph the lowest the IAT sensor goes is 43F, so about 13F above ambient. I only wish I had done this with the stock box before I had removed it. The 3.4 responds well to freeing up intake but I'm sure even with the mods I have done to seal off the filter from the engine air, the stock box drew colder air and I don't think I would do the intake mod unless I had done other engine mods that would suggest it needed more air. Todd
  21. Found some time to look into this a bit more. Yes I am cheap and trying to avoid buying another new MAF if the one I have is fine. Per the factory manual I tested the MAF, there is 5V between pin 47 and pin 45 and battery voltage to pin2. The manual says there should be 1V between pin 17 and 45, with the old MAF that has ~80k on it shows 1V. This sensor gives 1123 and 1125 errors and was the reason I bought a new sensor. The new sensor that gives the 1127/1129 codes shows 0.95 V. So does this suggest that the new sensor is bad? The factory doesn't give any +/- tolerance so I assume it is bad. Todd
  22. The fact the 996 engine and trans face different ways shouldn't be a big deal. This is the same issue as installing a 911 (915 or G50) trans in a 914, in those cases you just flip the ring gear, same thing should be do-able for the 996 trans I would think. I have never looked but does the shift linkage connect to the trans the same on a boxster and 996 trans? Todd
  23. This is a 2 piece wheel if I am correctly remembering. It is also manufactured for Porsche by BBS. So at a minimum you should be able to replace the wheel rim and keep your current center to reduce the cost. One of the benefits of modular wheels. Todd
  24. Toolpants, Here is my experience in swapping the 996 gauges onto the Boxster LCD board. It works just fine and allows you to keep the odometer mileage correct for your car. A couple of caveats. 1) I you use the 996 speedo gauge face to 175 mph, the analog speedo will not correspond to the actual speed. The output from the digital board must be different between the two to account for the different ranges and not the electrical gauge portion. 2) the voltmeter gauge portion did not work. This is how I fried my boxster lcd board on Friday, trying to figure out why. With the 996 lcd board hooked up to the 996 gauges it worked just fine, but swapping in the 986 board with the 996 gauges it failed to work. This may or may not be universal but is something to keep in mind. Oh, and don't hook 12 V to the voltmeter gauge directly, the gauge will work fine when disconnected from the car but when everything is hooked up it will fry the cluster. Ask me how I know :) Todd
  25. Shash, Actually I don't. I was messing around with doing some different things to my cluster, and well, long story short, I needed to use the spare one to fix my cluster. I do have some spare parts like the adjustment posts that seem to be bent in the pics above, but the lcd board I have is fried. The only other cluster I have is a later model 996 one that I bought by mistake when I did the cluster swap into my car. I need to throw it up on ebay or if anyone is thinking about swapping a 996 cluster into a later boxster let me know. Todd
