  1. 2002 C4S. Dropped transmission to replace AOS and Clutch. When disconnecting the cardan shaft from the transmission I found the rubber coupling to be cracked in a number of places. When I call the Porsche dealer they could not locate a P/N for just the rubber coupling. I am told it comes as a part of the entire shaft assy at a price of approx $450.00 When I look at the PET parts listing I can find no break down of the part either. The rubber coupling simply bolts to each part with 3 bolts each direction.... No reason I can fathom as to why the part is not listed separately as a wear item. Was hoping someone on here has been down this path before. Search revealed no clues... Thanks, Tom

  3. Not sure of your maintenance history but I would start with a good tune-up with careful attention to coil pack condition for cracks etc. Clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and go over everything with a good look at vacuum lines, hose connections etc. If the hesitation still exists then you will need someone with a durametric or PIWIS reader to start looking a little deeper.
  4. Can you define hesitation? Can be fuel related, electrical, weak battery etc. Bad plugs can certainly cause a hard to start condition but if they are that bad you would likely suffer other performance degradations including poor fuel economy. I would stick with the OEM plugs and there are plenty of threads on this site to help you.
  5. Or perhaps a failing coolant temp sensor or loose wiring!
  6. Guess it really depends on the maturity level of your son. A very close Friend of mine is a Doctor who bought his 16 YO son a 2000 M3. 2 years later and he has no tickets, no accidents, honor roll student and just picked up a ROTC scholarship. I grew up with high performance muscle cars of the 60's and wouldn't trade the experience for anything. On the other hand, we all know kids who couldn't handle the power and got themselves or others killed. In the end, if it were me and I felt my son showed the maturity and discipline then I would get him the 996! You can always take it away if he fails to live up to your expectations... R/Tom
  7. One slip with the screwdriver tip and you will have a nice permanent scratch! If it is yellowed from the heat of a bulb then you have little options. But if its dirt then I would use a soft wood dowel with the end rounded and sanded. Attach some soft terry cloth with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive and then use a very fine plastic polish to gently scrub away the spot.
  8. All authorized Porsche dealers/OPCs have access to IPAS codes. True, but a new key comes with a tag that has a 24 character code. (It may not be IPAS but that is what the dealer told me) If the key has been previously programmed by the dealer then you will most likely not need the numbers for the remote. When I had mine done recently the service manager told me to hang on to the tag with the number. Sometimes the 24 digit code is dropped from the computer and then cannot be reprogrammed. If he buys a key fob off of eBay, RT, RL etc. and doesn't get this tag, he will have wasted his money. Tom
  9. Will the guts from the 911 work or do I still have to order a standard boxster FOB head and then transfer it to a 911 case? - Yes the 2 button remote is the same for the 996/986. However, you need to make sure you have the IPAS codes or the dealer cannot reprogram. You can buy new ones from places other than the dealer but make sure you get the tags that come with as they have the codes necessary for reprogramming. When the dealer does the reprogram will they have to do both my old spare key and the new key? IE Will I get charges 2 x $150 - Yes, they will need to reprogram all the keys at once as reprogramming erases all the old info. labor charge is by the hour or partial hour if you exceed one hour. Most shops will have a one hour min. It only takes about 15 mins to program if the tech doesn't have any problems. Once you get the remotes back home you can pop the covers and swap the guts to your new FOB. BTW, people are funny about putting incorrect model designation parts on Porsches... a GT cost about 10 times what your car costs... Just saying... I sure don't care. Good luck, Tom
  10. More to the point -- you have to crack the case to get to these parts. The real tricky part is assembling the 4-6 pistons and doing the blind wrist pin spring lock. My partner manufactured his own tool -- but its not for the feint of heart. If the spring lock doesn't take it will require taking the block halves apart -- finding the spring lock -- and starting all over. mike Not sure that is correct (splitting the case) From all the info I can read you simply need to lock everything in place, remove the head covers and cams and then you have access to the cam chain saddle guides. The chain ramps chain be replaced by removing the bolts on the front of the engine block. However, you better be a darn good mechanic as everything will need to be retimed on assembly and you will need a few special tools. Pelican has a great tech article with tons of photo's that show this clearly. Tom
  11. 00Boxster, Swap will work fine, I did mine a few months ago. As Loren stated, just swap over the circuit card and pill and viola, you have a cool looking key fob. When you press the button to open the locks the "911" on the remote glows red. Kinda neat at night but then it doesn't take much to amuse me
  12. Our local dealer here in Va Beach matched the price of Sunset and I didn't pay shipping plus on one FOB I brought in a new one that the original owner had given me that he had never got around to programming. Which is part of the reason I ended up with 3 remotes. If all three of these fail I am going to trade the remotes in for a 997 Turbo
  13. Did you try SUNCOAST not Sunset like I suggested? They have them listed on the website but an email would confirm the availability. Customer service is tops!
  14. You can replace the battery but if no joy then you will need to go to a dealer or someone with a PST2. I had the same problem, did all the usual stuff including battery, switched polarity etc. No joy! Finally took it to the dealer and the remote could not be programmed as it had failed. Ended up replacing the key remote/fob and while I was there had them program a 3rd as a backup spare. Good luck, Tom
  15. You can buy one new from Suncoast porsche for $28.95. If you call them they can get you the entire set I expect. I have been using them for years and have always had great service. Also, you can set an alert for anytime someone lists a set on ebay. Eventually someone will list a set for less than $100.00. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product//CARMANUALS.html
  16. I upgraded mine to the new P/N for the same reason. I had both a leaky cap and a cracked tank. Replaced both and have had no issues since replacing around 6 months ago.
  17. I guess this is as dumb as your question as I am sure you have already checked but is it shown in the owners manual? Not on my 02 996 Coupe... R/Tom
  18. Our local dealership ordered me a key with just the VIN. I had to show them the registration for proof of ownership but $120.00 and a week later I had the key. As SPG stated, it is shipped from the factory. While there, I had them program a new remote and the combined total was 375.00, not a bad deal in my book and now I have three sets of keys should anything ever go south, remotes fail etc. I believe you can program up to 4 keys though I have no idea why you would want 4... Hope this helps, Tom
  19. I have a like new set of mufflers from an 01 C4S with less than 1500 miles on them. I believe they will fit a C2 with a little trimming of the exit pipe. (About an 1 1/2) First $250.00 takes them.
