  1. I have LM22s on mine. Work well. Billy My blog about my 996 C4
  2. I use blizzak lm22s on my 996 but while they work much better than the dunlop or pirellis in bad weather, they don't handle well, i.e. if you're an aggressive driver, you'll hate them. But, for normal driving in winter then these just work whereas the normal winter tires don't really grip in snow and ice, they are a low temperature rather than snow tire.
  3. I had this problem on my car and nothing showed up when I brought the car to the garage, visual checks, pressure tests, etc. It looked ok but it was definitely leaking. We found the leak in the end by putting a black light fluid in the coolant chamber after topping it up and then the next time it dropped, I went around the car with UV goggles and a black lite and there it was, the radiator hoses on the left driver radiator had 'yellow' all over them. These were then replaced (470 bucks US) and no problems since. My extended warranty didn't cover this because they are plastic parts. I'd recommend the same procedure fo your car if you want this sorted quickly. You can buy a black lite kit in any checkers etc. The porsche dealer recommended this procedure and didn't specify only use brand X so it should be fine. Billy
  4. I'm using Blizzak LM22s on 17 inch rims and they work fine in the winter. The porsche recommended tires don't seem to work very well in Minnesota weather. The LM22s work well but are only good to 130mph which isn't a problem round here in winter... I don't think the 'normal' winter tires work well as it's hard to have a V rated tire work in 0F or below tempatures.
  5. Anyone know if my 1999 C4 Tip can have it's tip upgraded? I read in the manual that I should be able to use the manual shift anytime bu tihs only works on mine in M mode. Is it just a firmware update or is it even possible?
  6. I use my 18's during the non snow season and the ride is good. The 17s for the winter are more comfortable as would be expected but the summer ride is fine for me also.
  7. The outside edge of my rear wheel are getting worn much faster then the middle and inside. I'm assuming this is camber/alignment. Do I have to take the car to my porsche dealer or can firestone etc align the car also? Thanks
  8. I have my barely used (read 20 miles) Fabspeed muffler bypass for sale on EBay for 300 bucks. Too loud for my neighbourhood and tastes. On a similar issue. I'm wondering how difficult the PSE is to install without the electronics? Also, I was using Lorens DIY muffler swap page for removing the original mufflers but removing the bolts on which the muffler hangs through the headers is very difficult. We found an easier way by using a 'normal' rachet wrench in the rear wheel bay. All the nuts for the muffler are removable by going in from the rear of the rear wheel well. The right hand wheel is a little trickier because of a hose but it's still way easier than going in through the headers under the car with a uni joined rachet. EBay Auction for FabSpeed Muffler bypass
  9. Hi, I just got a fabspeed muffler bypass. I'm worried now about the legality of it all. It appears though that a PSE with the bypass always on is basically the same as the FabSpeed bypass or am I wrong? Just how loud is the PSE in bypass mode? Is there any muffler at all when it's in bypass mode? Can you still get tickets? I'm just pondering all this after before installing the FabSpeed muffler on my C4. I'll do db reading for the sound level before and after and post when I'm done.
  10. The dealer added dye to the coolant and some showed up in the front left wheel arch. There weren't any obvious cracks etc on the hoses. The dealer replaced the hoses and has driven the car during the week with no loss of coolant finally. The extended warranty didn't cover the work (plastic hoses not covered) and it ended up costing 475US. Just happy the car is finally going to be problem free. Billy
  11. Hi, I'm thinking of getting either the fabspeed exhaust and headers or the billy boy equivalent for my 99C4. Has anybody else done this or have opinions. Whats risks to the car would this add, reliability etc. Thanks
  12. Well, My 99 996C4 is still losing coolant, seems to be using around 2 litres over 6000 miles. The dealer has done 2 pressure tests and the vacuum one and nothing shows up. He now added a die to the coolant which may show a leak with a black lite. Current suspect is a hairline crack on the coolant tank which only leaks during vibration, it's bizarre but nothing is showing up on the sucker. The dealer has been excellent so far and done all the tests at no charge. Hopefully, the dye will show something up after a week or so.
  13. Thats about what I get in a 99 C4 Tip, easy round town driving then 19, aggressive is like 16-17, motorway at stready 65 over 90 miles is around 27/28.
  14. No question, it's better with 17s. I just switched from my snow wheels, 17s and blizzak LM22s to my summers, 18s pirelli asymms and the ride is noisier and not so smooth on rough roads. But, turning is definitely sharper with the 18s. My main problem with 18s is you can't bring them to an autowash because the low profile wheels expose the rims to damage from the metal tire runners at the wash. My 17s were protected by the slightly higher tire wall and the excellent LM22s which have a rim saver lip on them. For just day to day driving, the 18s are a royal pain as a result and I wouldn't mind swapping my 18s for a set of 17s with summer rubber if the summer tires had rim lip protection like the blizzaks. For now though, it's hand wash only with the 18s on.
  15. Any put the GT3 headers on a 996? I noticed fabspeed sell a GT3 header kit claimed to add 12bhp.
  16. I noticed today that the buttons on my radio which are normally black are flaking. The buttons appear to be an off white plastic with a black plastic skin on top. The skin has broken about the edge of the buttons and is now peeling back. This seems to have just happened very quickly, and I'm wondering if the low temperatures (-10F to 10F) are the culprit when my car is parked outside the office. Anyone know if the buttons can be replaced? I have a 99C4 with a front 6 CD changer.
  17. I tried putting the caps from my porsche 18" turbo wheels to the mignia 1 (993 look a like 17") rims last night and it looks like they are too loose in the 17's. I though bugger, busted them but they replace snug in the 18's so it's not the caps, the holes in the 17 tirerack rims are just too big. Anyone else noticed?
  18. You can try the www.evoms.com supercharger modification which requires npo body work and gives for 420bhp and 360 torque for 10k.
  19. He said he did a coolant in oil test and it was negative.
  20. I brought my car (99C4) to the dealer who did a pressure test and checked the oil for coolant mixing. He also checked all the pipes for residue from leaking and nothing. So, everything is negative for leaks but I'm putting min-max fluide every morning. Any ideas?
  21. My 996 tip is the same but if you drive it more aggressively or kick down then the tip goes in to sports mode and moves all the shift points and then it drives a lot better. Normally, the car feels pretty lethargic because of the low shift points.
  22. The factory warranty on the 01 will disappear next year regardless so you'll need to purchase an after market warranty or take the risk you self. A warranty costs about US2.5k for 6 yr/72k miles. I got one on my 99C4 with 17k when I bought it. My worry about the GT3 kit is ground clearance etc when parking etc. The normal C4 clears pavements fine. I think you'd be happy with either car, I'd personally probably go with the 00 but without seeing them it's hard to tell. You might also want to check on getauto.com because the prices of 996's vary considerably with the market they are sold in to. CA, CT and NJ look most expensive places to buy cars. Looks like a good arbitrage opp for the fast of foot.
  23. Whats the 'normal' level of coolant in the tank when the engine is cold? I have to say I don't know. I'm thinking that filling to max when cold is a bad idea, i.e., when it gets hot, it overflows and then when it's cold, it's down at close to min again. If this is the case, then refilling it is a waste of time, it'll just end up on the ground anyway. I refilled it this morinng in any case and drove it 10 miles to work and the level in the tank was .5cm above max and looked like above the level of the overflow hose attached to the tank. Does this mean it's now overflowing? I plan on just driving it for the next couple of days and checking the level when cold, maybe, min when cold is 'normal' and if it stays level like that then I don't think I have a problem. Any advice apprec.
