  1. The best way to ensure maximum life for a battery is to maintain it fully charged. Once a battery is partially discharged, about 70% or so, the cells begin to sulfate. This is permanent damage that diminishes the battery capacity. The sulfation rate increases with warmer temperatures, also on partially discharged batteries. There is no down side to keeping a battery connected to a properly adjusted voltage regulated and current limited charger. For example, for a flodded cell lead-acid battery, it is acceptable to maintain this with a power supply set to 13.8 VDC. This maintenance requires that the cells are periodically inspected and topped-off with distilled water. That requirement also increases with increasing temperatures.
  2. There are three Controller Area Network (CAN) communication busses. The CAN Drive bus data rate is 500 kBit/s, with comm impossible with a short or open. The CAN Infotainment and CAN Convenience busses data rate are 100 kBit/s. Comm is possible on a single wire with a short or open. The Drive and Convenience busses are presented for external connection through the Gateway. The Infotainment is not available externally.
  3. Replace the positive lead terminal with a straight 0.250 male Faston terminal. It may then be inserted into an unused fuse block receptacle. Ensure that the positive lead wire includes an in-line fuse. The negative lead is connected to any clean, unpainted, chassis screw, nut or bolt.
  4. This sounds like the gauge is getting power and ground, but not the signal lead from the transducer. It sounds like the connection from the transducer to the gauge is open circuit.
  5. Thank you very much for sending me the document. It contains lots of useful information. This document, titled: “HID Headlights – how they work” may be purchased from the publisher, Silicon Chip. I requested permission from the publisher to post that article here, but they declined. That is correct for the metal halide lamp, not the Xenon. According to the article, in the metal halide section, “Initially, the tube emits a dull bluish discharge but as heat from the arc vaporizes the mercury (and other metals) and the pressure increases, it changes to a brilliant white.” As previously stated, this does not agree with the PerkinElmer Cermax Lamp Engineering Guide, page 31. This also disagrees with the article which states the Xenon lamp blackens, “In particular, tungsten from the electrodes gradually blackens the inside of the tube”. Of particular interest to me was that the lamp drive is not unipolar, with a specific polarity, with the lamp having an anode and a cathode. Instead, the lamp has a bipolar drive, with the electrode polarity being reversed using an H bridge. The Cermax and XBO lamps that I have used both have unipolar drives.

Is there a specific link to an engineering design guide or a manufacturer's data sheet, or any other technical document that supports this information?
  7. As defined in the PerkinElmer Cermax Lamp Engineering Guide, page 7, there are almost imperceptible shifts in the color temperature throughout the life of this Xenon lamp. However, the decrease in intensity, is documented and measurable. The deposition of electrode material onto the internal reflector and window is described on page 31. The movement of the arc is shown on page 10. Small changes at this location in the optics translates to large changes where the lamp illuminates.
  8. The proper avenue is to have all the appropriate manual sections on-hand, prior to starting. These should be read and understood in advance.
  9. Yes, the intensity of Xenon lamps drops with usage. Internal to the lamp, the electrodes erode, the arc moves and deposits form on the optics, all contributing to the decrease in intensity.
  10. Why not just quantify the state of charge and the available cranking amperes with this tool that performs a fast, safe, easy and accurate measurement. The old days of putting a large load onto a battery are, or should be, long gone. Now, with this tool, the battery characteristics are quantified.
  11. All the documentation I've seen shows MOST devices in a loop, with other components. It may be that using a F.O. cable to loop the PCM2 input to output may satisfy the head unit and permit functionality. The service manuals have the connector pinouts. The Becker web site also has this information, for similar models, using the same connector. It may even be possible to get an interface cable, with connectors that plug into the PCM2 speaker connectors, from a company like Crutchfield.

  13. The MOST fiber optical network, used for passing audio music data and entertainment system control commands, is a closed loop. That is, if the vehicle is built with the CD player and BOSE, there will be and in and an out of each component in the system, to form an unbroken loop. So, as Loren said, follow the TSB, get the additional cables to augment and replace those on your vehicle, to permit this component to be added. Then, bring it to the dealership to have the CD player enabled.

  15. Remove the panel below the box, near the footwell, one screw, I think. Remove the aluminum trim to the right of the latch button, it just pops off. The top and bottom screws are then exposed. It is less work if the box is not fully removed. Otherwise the heat tube and latch mechanism cable will also need to be removed. Yes, there are places back there to fit stuff.

  17. The $19,900 Turbo Power Kit is option E81, not option X50, according to the Porsche configurator web site.
  18. My first 4/10/04 post in this topic has the wiring information. My 5/2/04 posts list, show and identify the sources for the required parts. The vehicle will require the dealership to use the PST2 to toggle the phone status to enabled so that the audio will come out the right front speaker. Otherwise the mute will work, but no sound will come out.
  19. Yes, a US PCM may be "integrated" to a cell phone, even the V710 with bluetooth. The integration means auto mute on phone usage, remote sound through right front speaker and connecting the unused second cabin mic, dedicated for the phone, to the phone kit. The calls are answered by whatever the handsfree kit supports.
  20. That seems like a hard sell for the Cayenne, which has a spoiler designed for hiding all the antennas.
  21. No, that sounds wrong. Try turning the PSM off and trying again. It may be the vehicle is detecting traction loss and compensating. How is the tire tread?
