  1. There are two types of aftermarket led tails currently on the market. The ones from Taiwan that are sold by many vendors on ebay and amazon, and the more costly ones from Europe that resemble 997 lights. The Asian ones may need modification (adding resistors) depending on the model year of your car. Even then, people have said that there is one connection that shouldn't be used or you'll blow a fuse, but unfortunately they come with no instructions. The European lights, made by Dectane, are truly plug and play, and are said to be better made. I believe that the Dectanes are about $500 vs $350 for the others. There are several active threads about this issue on 6speedonline.
  2. My convertible top has started squeaking during the last stages of the opening process. I'm looking to find which parts need lubricating and which lubricant to use.
  3. My 2000 Cab top just began squeaking today when opening and closing. I'll have to poke around to see if I can find out what needs to be lubricated.
  4. I believe that the electronic oil level indicator has a very narrow range, so being down two bars from the top translates to a small difference in the amount of oil present.
  5. Please let us know the outcome. I'm sure other cab owners would like to know the cost, process, etc.
  6. Generally, I don't like black wheels, but these look great on your car.
  7. I just did this DIY, based on the video which is terrific. I would like to add one small piece of information that can save some frustration. In the video, he explains how the second screw (behind the wheel well cover) can't be seen and you have to feel for it. This is true, but it's helpful to know that the bottom of the screw is visible, sticking up through the side marker opening. This will help you locate it with a minimum of trouble. I fumbled around for some time trying to find the hidden screw, until I realized it was right there in front of me. You might want to put some lotion on the back of your hands before you do this. Mine are a bit raw today from scraping on the rigid plastic covers.
  8. The fronts are only about 4 years old, so I'm good to go until the rears need replacing again. I'll use the hollow spoke wheels for now. When I get around to it, I'll have the Sport Design wheels refinished and either sell them or mount my snow tires on them. When I got the car back from the tire shop, I loosened and re-torqued all bolts and checked the pressure all around. Standard, or obsessive?
  9. Yes, it seems that 265's are recommended for winter tires, but 285's for summer tires on 11J RO 63 wheels. I looked at the MY2000 brochure and you are correct. The "Turbo-look" wheels are somewhat similar to my winter wheels. My summer wheels are shown in the brochure as "Sport Design" wheels and are pictured on the GT3. I wonder if the dealer did this to "sweeten" the deal, only he used Boxster wheels instead. I'm going to change the order to 285's. I did some searching and it seems that they shouldn't be a problem. Update: The tire store says he can't get a 285 in the brand/type tire I need. Since I need to match the fronts, I'm going with the 265's.
  10. Thanks, Loren. All set to get the new tires and start using my winter wheels for my summer tires. I like my original wheels, but these are nice too. Not too much of a trade-off. - Bill
  11. Ok, thanks, but more questions. Sorry, but I'm not very familiar with tires/wheels. I think tires and wheels used to be a lot less complicated when I was a teenager (don't ask). My winter wheels have the same size tires as my summer wheels (225/40 18) even though the wheels are different widths (8 vs 7.5 ). I'm thinking of transferring my good front tires from my summer wheels to my winter wheels. Then I could just buy two new (summer) tires for my rear winter wheels, and sort the summer wheel issues out at a later date. Does this sound like a good plan?
  12. I need new rear tires on my 2000 C2. I have what's listed on the original sticker as "18" Lt Alloy Wheel - Turbo Look". These are the wheels shown in the attached photo. The front wheels are 7.5J x 18, RO 50 with Continental SportContact2 N2 225 / 40 ZR 18 Tires The rears are 9J x 18, RO 52 Continental SportContact2 N2 265 / 35 ZR 18 Tires The fronts are fine, but from what I've read, the rears are for a Boxster, not a 911, though the tires are the proper size for a 911. I bought the car from the original owner (a friend of the family) who is a very wealthy, spare-no-expense, let the dealer do everything, type of person. I don't believe there is any possibility that this person would have gone for a cheaper alternative with something like wheels. So there are a few possibilities that come to mind. 1. Could it be that in 2000, 9J x18 x 50 rears were approved for 911? The TSB that I've read is dated June, 2011. 2. The dealer could have used a boxster wheel unintentionally or otherwise. 3. The car came from the factory that way (by mistake). Now the question is "What do I do"? I have a set of winter wheels/tires on the car at the present time (8J x 18, RO50 and 11J x 18, RO63) 1. Get new rear tires and have them mounted on the 9J x 18 x 50 original wheels. (which I assume have been on the car for 12 years) 2. Get four new tires and use my winter wheel set. 3. Look for a set of replacement rear wheels in 10J x 18 x 65. I'm looking for the cheapest safe solution.
  13. Thanks. So if I'm understanding this correctly, in Auto mode, the Tip will automatically downshift when the brake is applied (foot off the gas), depending on the intensity of deceleration. That should mean that manually downshifting in similar situations would be no different than what the transmission would have done on its own. Does this sound right?
  14. MY 2000 C2 Tip I've been searching a few boards and have found that there are two opposing camps on the subject of engine braking. 1 Downshifting a tip to slow down should never be done. It puts unnecessary stress on the engine and transmission. or 2. Engine braking with a Tip is not a problem. It was designed to do that. I'm looking for an informed, non-emotional take on this.
  15. Thanks for the photos and info! This is the first time I've actually seen this. Do you know what that unused skinny wire is for? Is it just a mistake in design?
  16. More confused than ever. "I can verify that all lights work...the only bulbs I used were the backup bulbs...I don't ever use the rear fog..." I'm not getting this at all.
  17. My manual saga: The previous owner of my car couldn't find the manual when he sold me the car. He ordered one from a dealer in Connecticut and had it sent directly to me. The invoice was for $250. A short time later, I found the original manual under my seat. I gave it to someone on Rennlist who needed one. About two months later, I left my car with my sister so she could drive it while I was away on vacation. She lost the manual. Really. I was able to order one from Suncoast Porsche for around $30. It was on back-order and took a couple of months for me to get it. So, I'm on my third manual and I feel bad for people who are unable to get one.

  19. Also check where the roof connects to the windshield near the sun visors. I had one side loosen up a bit causing some vibration. If that's what's causing your creaking it's an easy fix - just pop off the plastic plug to reveal the screws.

  22. Wow, those little buggers are expensive. Probably a silly question, but have you tried hitting it with MAF cleaner?
  23. It takes my car about 10 minutes of driving to get up to 180 during the summer. In the winter, it can take more than 15 minutes. I have the low temperature thermostat, so I don't know if that makes a difference.
  24. I think I've learned more about the cause(s) of IMS problems in this thread than I've learned reading untold numbers of other threads and websites.
