  1. My 914 agreed value policy did not require an appraisal, and I just upped it last year w/o appraisal. We just agreed to a value. Shop around. I'm with American Collectors Insurance via my USAA membership/liability policies. For the record I have a free PCA valuation every few years to establish value if contested.
  2. Motul 8100X-CESS and X-Clean are P-approved, but are only API SL and SM respectively. SL is bare minimum IMO. Motul X-Max is not on the P-list. I have been using very expensive unapproved, but terrific Motul 300V, but will probably go to Castrol Syntec this year. From their website: SAE 5W–40: is engineered specifically to meet the Volkswagen engine warranty requirements, exceeding VW 502 00 and 505 00. Exceeds all car and light truck manufacturer’s warranty requirements for the protection for gasoline, diesel and turbocharged engines where API SL, SJ, SH, CF or CD is recommended. Exceeds European ACEA: A3, B3, B4, MB 229.3, MB 229.1, BMW LL-98, Porsche A40. Meets the engine protection requirements of Volvo, BMW, Mercedes Benz and ILSAC GF-3 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils.
  3. I'm thinking the same thing and just hit Castrol USA's website for ratings. Also awaiting an eval of the 10W-40 from another source. Meanwhile save $20 at this site! http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongene...ntentId=7058683
  4. I've never heard it, but it does sorta sound similar to Porsche.
  5. Get a decent maintainer! CTEK is popular and apparently quality. The anti-sulfation versions are best. I use the Porsche branded version. You can use your new battery to put voltage on the terminals of the fuse panel to pop the hood. And..... :welcome: :welcome:
  6. Good advice. Especially meeting at a public place. I'd never let someone take my car out without me in it. Meet him/her at the PPI facility and agree about who pays for it in advance. Provide service records/receipts for examination. Authorize any service shop to provide service/repair info. Might consider your insurance bill as this a is sometimes a concern If you have the window sticker bring that too, and tape it (or a copy of it) to the window when parked. With a removable "For Sale by Owner" sign. I did sell a 944 on the day before I was going to turn it over to a dealer on consignment. But my experience is that most buyers are looking for an extreme deal or a steal from a private party. Probly a good time to get a deal on a new car, and a bad time to sell. Dealer trade later is always an option if selling proves too hard. I would get a coupla three quotes from a dealer so you'll know
  7. +1 on battery maintainer. Some people call maintainers trickle chargers, maybe even Porsche. Just make sure it is a chipped maintainer that "knows" the correct charge level. There are CTEK and one of the Porsche maintainers that also prevent sulfation.
  8. Check for oil on the floor for leaks. Smell could be from overfilling oil at last service. Any smoke? Of, and WELCOME! :renntech: :welcome: :welcome:
  9. +1 Jake has been famous for years in the 914-4/VW world, and has now added the M96 to his credentials. And jmatta is right about MM's rep. One 911 engine expert posted that it was the worst 911 engine rebuild he'd ever seen.
  10. You need to use a battery maintainer. Batteries hate the discharge-recharge cycle and will only do it a fixed number of times. Some versions prevent sulfation.
  11. No the M96s do not all grenade. Most do not. Leaking RMSs can be replaced and LN Engineering has an IMS fix or upgrade. Jake Raby can repair some IMS damage and install the improved design. The 09 has a new design. Not sure if any issues have arisen.
  12. Welcome! :welcome: :welcome: Depends on what the fault is. As self-protection, some faults cut power to allow you to limp home or to service facility. Duratec or other systems can tell you what codes have been thrown. PST-2 or later PIWIS at service centers do this best. Good luck!
  13. Should be 50-50 water and silicate-free coolant. Test engine mixture with hydrometer. Max 60% coolant takes you to -40F.
  14. There is a cell phone connector with a three prong connector behind the center stack of the 986. Has switched, unswitched and mute. Access by pulling out upholstery panel by driver's right calf. Not sure if it is there on 987s. Easy if it is!
  15. Flushing can cause particles to break loose from one place and gum up another, such as small oil passages. As wvicary said, the engine should not need if if it was properly maintained with correct oil and filter changes. If it wasn't maintained properly, sludge particulates could be waiting for a flush to be transported to do evil in critical passages before it hits the filter. Which is one reason maintenance records are critical when buying a used car.
  16. +1 There is no Porsche approved 30 weight. Only 0W-40, 5W-40 and 5W-50 currently.
  17. Actually that is pretty normal. A limited slip differential will even the torque to both wheels/tires. Either clutch type or torque biasing differential.
  18. I'd just call Suncoast or go online and get new ones. Did not think they were even painted! And WELCOME!!! :renntech: :D
  19. The power connection behind the center stack has a switched +12V, an unswitched +12V and a ground. (Also a mute) I did the hard wire of the switched power to my radar detector and put a BMW plug in the lighter for when my battery maintainer is not connected.
  20. +1 Here's to Loren and all the members! And Happy 2010!
