  1. @gbratk thanks again for your input... very helpful! Re: #3, how much were the mounts (about $130?) and even if engine doesn't need to be removed how much of a job is it, time or cost wise... for other members, I live in a city (SF) and thus don't have any of the tools I used to have, nor the space, and frankly don't have the comfort or DIY expertise for something of the magnitude of a valve body replacement... Anyone out there that has done this that wants to make some cash and not require me to shell out $110-145/hr at the local Bay Area Euro indy's I have used in the past??
  2. @gbratk very helpful, I appreciate it... pretty much what I had gathered from my searches... Since it sounds like I'm about to drop an arm & a leg let's break this down further (what'd you pay for these jobs when you had them done or did them?) 1) cardan shaft center bearing can be purchased online to replace the OEM - what labor is involved with that? 2 hours? 2) less of a priority given the rest, but yes due for an alignment now that I took my snow tires off and put summers back 3) I had replace engine mounts on the to-do list with my local indy, and if I recall it would have been a $1100 job... what is involved and how much labor? 4) This sounds brutal but also sounds like I shouldn't drive the car until this is taken car of?! The valve body, I have seen posts where I can buy one online, how much labor beyond buying the part itself am I looking at? What about TCM? I have seen plenty of posts where people replace one or the other, but sounds like I need to knock out both? Any input from all on the labor (in hours since pricing varies coast to coast) would be beneficial... I just did water pump, thermostat, pipes, etc. so this hitting me literally 2 months later isn't fun but such is life owning a MY04
  3. I have searched & searched and always do so to eliminate the classic "do a search" reply... In doing a search, the inevitable has happened which similar to reading WebMD, i now think my car has every problem in the book... Help me with these symptoms and understand which route to take and what my problems might be... I think I've narrowed it to 2 problems MY04 Cayenne S w 92k Miles 1) At very low speeds 1-7mph, hear a very faint almost whine noise when accelerating... 2) While driving full highway speed, slight vibration in steering area 3) A general car vibration that is getting progressively worse, center arm rest area, especially at a stop (but in Drive) 4) Shifting in D (90% of the time I've owned the car, I've used the manual shifting) has become pretty rough when using true automatic with gear in D, from 1 to 2 and really 2 to 3 or in the city most down-shifts (6 to 5, 5 to 4) From everything I have searched slash been told by my mechanic that I may need to fix, I have decided its hopefully one of these (if not both) items.... 1) Cardan shaft replacement 2) Engine mount replacement Given your experiences, do those 2 items typically align with my symptoms? How much in parts & labor for each  ... Could the above be playing a part in #4? If i have gone too long without replacing the above could I be looking at a bigger transmission or valve body related job because of #4? I won't be driving the car in the meantime would appreciate any possible insight!! Thx
  4. Had it towed to my guy and he said they use vacuum system to put coolant (and A/C related) which eliminates the air bubble problem. One concept that was brought up which I hope really isn't the case involves the engine consuming the coolant; hence no leak, but the coolant disappearing on me. Anything of this nature, involving head gaskets, etc. does not sit well with me. Any insight into this happening with any one or help would be appreciated. I don't want to just start shelling out $1000s as this has me very frustrated. Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the help guys. @wvicary I hear them and they remain running for a few minutes once the car is off so i don't foresee that being an issue. With that said, anything specific I should be looking for or is the ear test good enough? @PKN, i went to my guy and had him check everything at which point he thought the coolant looked fine, was topped off, and we didn't smell any of the syrupy-coolant smell. I drove off. This was about a week ago. This AM i finally got the infamous check coolant level warning, 10 miles from my office. Based on it being highway got here no problem but will have it towed to them this afternoon rather than risk driving it again (safer, correct?)... Given the recent history I'm real frustrated this is coming up again, what should I keep an eye out for? 1) Is it really possible the water pump could have gone just months after being installed? I do have a 90 day warranty on the original job so should I push to have it re-done? 2) The coolant leak I originaly thought I was seeing was really the A/C condensation, we spent some time watching it and agreed that was the case. With that said, there is a leak somewhere since the coolant shouldn't be going from full to check status in 2 months. Clearly it isn't occuring in an obvious way, any tips? Thanks! Pete
  6. I know this is a topic often reviewed here on the forum but I was looking for a little more help prior to just letting my local mechanic ream me for a few thousand dollars. Use the forum often, rarely (if ever) post, but have been far more active on equivalent sites for cars I've owned in past (Audi/BMW/etc)... Have an 04 Cay S, 87k miles, owner for past 16 months, probably drive 1200-1500mi/month. About 2 months ago, in traffic temp gauge went above 220 - i know it is very common for it to fluctuate in that 180-220 range but this was first ever time it went beyond. Was home about 1 mile later with no real issue. The next morning I got the "check coolant level" message, figured I could get to my mechanic 20 miles away and about 17 miles of the way there, got stuck in a little morning traffic and it quickly overheated, I sort of saw it coming so immediately pulled over and turned it off and waited for AAA. Shop replaced the water pump, coolant pipes (from the old plastic ones), flushed the coolant, etc. and for about 6 weeks all ran smooth, and even with being in some traffic never got past 180-190 temp wise. Over past 7 days its quickly become worse and is willing to fluctuate above 180 pretty quickly and certainly smells like coolant once parked. I have added to prior threads - 1) http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42289-coolant-smell-always-evrything-replaced/ - in posting #7, does anyone know what the part is in the bottom right of the diagram? almost looks like a filter? that is leaking - what part is that and is it a major reason for conern? 2) http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42643-ac-dryer-2004-cs/ - does this user's issue correlate to me at all? Thanks for your help!
  7. I assumed it wouldn't be a possible problem. But that was in response to 'a17322a''s post. in Range Rovers of certain years not having the full out air suspension, some pieces were still similar, so I thought maybe that may be the case? Regardless, i think your original idea of it being small hamsters in the blend doors is reasonable
  8. The noise has not happened since I posted the above which makes me happy. Based on my experiences with turning A/C off I would like to think it is climate control motor related, but really have no idea. Re: air suspension compressor, my Cayenne does not have the suspension which rises/lowers... could this still be a possibility? That sounds much scarier long term than the above problem. Thanks
  9. In a short couple of mile drive at slow speed I got this motorized sound (sounds like some type of motor that can't kick the sound or isn't fulfilling its duty? Have no idea)... This only happened once before and I turned the A/C totally off and it coincidentally went away. It just happened again for a longer period of time, a couple of minutes and A/C off did nothing. It sounds like its right in front of me, either in the dash area, or inside the engine bay an dlooking at it from outside it would be top right. I really don't know how else to describe it and I'm unsure of what it could be. Honestly, best explanation I have is a small motorized sound, pretty consistent. Sorry for being broad - hopefully someone can help from here and we narrow it down... THanks
  10. Snagged the car last night, very excited to give it a go on 101 and what do you know... traffic. Anyway, it did open up a couple of times and its great (this isn't 1st time I've driven this car, or S or TT, so just reiterates why I bought it) First impressions --- 1) Gas guzzler but such is life 2) Drove it for a good hour, once I hit streets of San Francisco (stop & go coupled with up & down), the thermostat started fluctuating a bit between the steady 180 and 200-210. At one point, because of first day paranoia I got out and smelled around (small tinge of coolant smell), looked under the car, etc. - once I got home I did get some forum posts showing that in 04's this is a normal occurance. Any clarity on that? Seems a little weird that the thermostat moves like that but then again its a big car. In all cases, once going back down hill or moving a bit it would subside back to 180. 3) My other car is an A4 with 19s and coilovers so forgive me for thinking that the Cayenne's ride is cushy, but is it? Or is it just that I'm so used to feeling everything on the road that I'm just not used to the comfort feeling yet? All in all, great car - thanks for the help yesterday @ Don - When and why will you be heading out to Cali? What parts...
  11. I'm brand new to all this but have done Audi/BMW events in the past... I'd be happy to lend a hand slash provide some beers
  12. Don, I appreciate it. BTW, my grandparents lived in Spring Lake for a good decade or so. Have a lot of friends that spend their summers there, or Manasquan, Sea Girt, etc. * Pipes were done mid-2007; not sure if that is early in its life or not. I'd have to take a look at the part itself. * Coils wise is it as easy as on my Audis? Almost like replacing spark plags? For $160 i'd be more than willing to knock that out, but you tell me if I am missing something. * Last but not least, you think the drivetrain would fall into the warranty? Seems like the biggest possible future cost inhibitor besides the usual stuff
  13. Also, like I said, I pick the vehicle up today - too late for me to go back to the negotiation table and if the above need to be done have the dealership meet me halfway (or all the way)... Do I completely walk away? Thanks all...
  14. 1) No history for Coils at this point - if i were to be pre emptive and get it done fairly immediately what am i looking at? to replace all 8 2) Cooling pipes were done at 33xxx - Once replaced by Porsche is this usually a non-issue going forward? 3) No history that I know of for the driveshaft - is this extremely common? Similar to above, what is the best thing to do? Be pre-emptive and replace the rubber mount and/or bearing? Thanks
  15. Hate to revert this thread TTT but the key FOB that came with my used vehicle is pretty beat up - it works and does the trick but doesn't exactly exemplify the nice luxurious vehicle I am driving... If i were to use that key as a backup, what is the best way to get a replica key fob made? Is the $290 mentioned above for the Porsche piece, key, programming, and it being cut? Any cheaper solutions via ebay to get the piece and leave the programming/cut to the stealership? Thanks
