Radio readout says "error"

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a '99 Boxster, and while riding down the road the other day listening to a cd, the player just quit, and the readout just says "error". I tried changing cds, etc. but just continue to get the same error message. The radio operates properly, just no cd. It is the the stock Becker single cd unit (cdr 220?). Any ideas on a problem/solution? Considered disconnecting the battery, then starting over and entering codes, etc. but thought perhaps someone else had encountered this prob. Thanks!!!

it probably needs to be serviced by Becker.

you could try one of those laser lens cleaner CDs with the little brushes on it. it may be that your CD lens is dirty and can't read the info on the disc.

but i'm guessing there is a problem with the CD player itself. mine did the same thing. it will selectively play CDs. some work, most don't.

contact Becker at http://www.beckerautosound.com

just FYI, the Becker radios are pretty crappy. an aftermarket stereo (Alpine, Nalamichi, etc.) would probably serve you better in the long run. see what Becker wants to charge to fix it and compare that to the cost of a new (better quality) radio. The site says they charge 1.5 hours labor + parts cost, which could easily be $200-300 depending on what they need to replace.

I'll try the cleaner, but I think I'll just shop for an Alpine (or another stock unit on ebay), if those are the only options. I don't want to invest too much in it, and would prefer to keep it stock, as it's just an interim driver until the new 911 comes along! Thank you for the quick response!!!

I have the very same problem. No matter what type of CD I put in, I always get the error. What a headache. I tried the cleaner, no go, I tried the CD lens cleaner, no go. I am either going to wait for a deal on eBay or buy some aftermarket radio.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem let me know.
