Hello, I am interested in changing my 996 3.4 to a 3.6 or 3.8 but I am being told that there is wiring issues. Would it be economical just to get another 3.4 motor and have it sleeved and bored to 3.8 saving the wiring headache or the wiring issues with the 3.6 and 3.8 are not that serious? If anyone went through this help and advise would greatly be appreciated.

Even if you bore your engine, you're going to need to have software to make it run properly. The stock maps probably can't adapt to that kind of change in their operating parameters. There is a thread here or on Rennlist about this swap by a boxster driver. He did the 3.4 and has now gone to the 3.6 liter. He's probably a good source for questions on this topic.

viper501 is correct - you will need a new DME and some wiring that is missing to make it run right.

Todd Holyoak has written some DIY tips for a conversion for a Boxster. The good news is that you won't have to move any fuel rails (the engine faces the opposite direction in a Boxster). Todd's write is here.

FVD offers a 3.8 conversion:

But not exactly cheap....
