CV Joints loose

I have buzzing in the rear of the car. I have narrowed it down to either the CV joints or some internal transmission issue. When I grab the axle I can move it back and forth (from trans to hub) about 3/4". In my experience with other CV joint cars, this should not be the case.

Is this normal for a 986?

The boots are clean and there is grease inside. I personally would pack more, so I have removed them. Is there an approved grease I should be using?

Lateral free play is common and indeed necessary with drive shaft and CV joints.

As the car suspension moves up and down so the length of the driveshaft needs to change this is achieved by allowing the play you describe.

All shafts of this type of constuction must do it, i guess you havnt noticed it before.

If you overpack grease when it heats up and expands it will either split the boot up push it off.

The buzz must be something else, joints when badly worn will produce a cracking noise

You refer to grease expanding in the boots. When I opened the boot the grease was only on the joint, and I could slightly see the bearings in the grease. The boot was clean and dry. I assume this is not the correct amount of grease and there should be enough to fill some of the boot, but not all of it?

It sounds like you have the right amount.

Naturally people would pack grease until the boot is full, but its not necessary, providing the boot is undamaged then the grease quantity will be right, the grease is supplied in a plastic bag type of applicator, cut it and sqeeze it in and around the bearings, you dont need a lot

CV joints grind grease into mush over the time. That is why we use the special grease in them and is also why they should be cleaned and repacked.- Pelican
