My car makes this odd tapping noise when starting. No other time you can hear it in this You tube clip.

Just as he is starting you'll notice a loud quick burst of defined tapping. It kind of sounds like when you pull the hand brake quickly.

Many Thanks and Happy Holidays!

You really think so? It's hard for me to imagine the starter gear making that loud of a noise. It sounds comparable to a bad rod.

I think the timing chains, they can rattle after one or two days of stand still when the oil is leaking to the oil pan, it's not exactly uncommon on 996 -986.

Hmm, I guess I need to look at the layout of chains. It does not happen every time, I can say that if I go from place to place it does not do it but occasionally when I start the car in the garage it makes this noise. Never quite paid attention to the time span between starts when it does this, but I will now. Thanks

Its not the starter. Believe it or not this does actually happen on these cars but the noise is very distinct. It sounds like chain noise to me, especially if the only time you hear it is on start up. Its not really a problem but if the car is under warranty you can mention it and they may replace your chain tensioners.

Thanks a lot guys. I have been trying to figure it out for some time. I definitely only hear it on start up. It does not do it from place to place. Only on the first start of the day and not every time then either maybe it has to do with the amount of time between starts. It is definitely a unique sound. Loud like a rod but more busy/methodical if that makes any sense? I have not had the pleasure of hearing an anchor drop but, yea, I could say it would be pretty darn close.

Again Many Thanks WVICARY and PTEC!

My 996 has been doing that noise for years (only on start up) I'm in agreement wih the heat shield theory. I have had my friend start the car with me standing in the back with the engine cover open. The sound comes from the muffler area on mine.

Sounds like a bad starter to me. Had the same sound on the old 3.4 in my boxster. The shaft in the starter sticks in the extended position and rattles on the starter gear on the flywheel for a second before retracting. Replaced my starter and all was well. I have several extra starters if you want to swap it out and check.
