2003 911 Carrera audio system "static"

2003 996 audio system burst of static on or off

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The other day while driving my 2003 996 cab I turned on the radio/CD. The radio face lit but no sound. I turned the radio off with the thought of checking it when I got home. A few minutes later ther was a very loud burst of "static" in all of the speakers. This continued to happen 5 or 6 times in a 20 minute drive, radio off or on, and even once after the ignition was turned off in the garage. I pulled the two audio fuses D 8 & 9. The noise stopped. I put the fuses back in and everything worked as normal???? Anybody have any clues as to what is going on? Does the amp have a relay somewhere that was/is sticking?

Although your problem may be more complex, I have noticed that my 4yr old Motorola cell phone was causing static, hum and pop through the speakers when I placed it the storage area below the radio in my '02 Cab. Additionally, the problem continued to occur to a lesser extent when I moved the phone into the center armrest even when the radio was off. My wife who drives the car M-Fri to/from work rarely has her phone on and has not reported any static.

A cell phone or lack of one might be part of the problem. Periodically the unit will beep and tell me no TP. I am assuming that means no Cell phone or no cell coverage? I do not have a cell installed in the car but I do have one on my belt.

I believe TP is for the Traffic Program option... certain FM stations may broadcast alerts, traffic updates etc on that band.

Also the issues with the radio are fairly common... the only fix I have tried that works every time is just pulling the fuses. I have had the Amplifier replaced before and that did not solve the problem.

So BEEP, NO TP means no traffic program? I guess that is something we need to know every 20 minutes or so. Thank you for the info. If I only have to pull the fuses every once in awhile to get the audio system back on line I can live with that,

It is funny that my younger brother's Kia audio system does not do that.

I guess our audio software is early Microsoft. At least the ECU does not seem to be the same or the car would stop periodically and you would have to turn it off, take the key out and have everyone get out to restart (reboot) it.

you must be familiar with the comic bit by, I believe, Billy Connelly, titled "Reinstalling Windows."

the only issue I've had with the radio is that sometimes only Porsche is displayed. I've either ejected or inserted a cd which seems to cause the unit to function properly. seems there needs to be a new section in Renntech for Misc Porsche Gremlins... (Loren, just kidding....)
