Rattle in the right rear

Recommended Posts

I've recently pickup a rattle on my 01 Boxster S. It is coming from the right rear, and you only hear it when you rev the engine. Sounds alot like a loose or vibrating shroud or heat shield of some sort. Its only a nuisance, but it didn't do it before.

Ideas or an obvious place to look?

Thanks,

Dan

Dan:

Sounds like it might be your exhaust heat shields, especially since you state that you only hear it when you rev the engine.

You can replace the bolts that hold them in place. Some have removed them and wrapped the areas with exhaust wrap "tape".

I have the same nagging problem. When you say remove the heat shield and wrap the areas. Just what do you wrap? I'd love to fix this problem. This is the only ongoing problem I've had with my 02 and I'd love to fix it.

I remember someone on PPBB recently posted a photo of the result. I think his name is "Boxsterra". I'll look for the post and direct you to it ASAP.

Regards, Maurice.

("Boxsterra" here)

There are two heat shields on each side and all of them have a tendency to rattle. The ones in the picture (front) are very difficult to fix as they are originally spot welded and the weld breaks over time. I ripped them off and replaced them with heat wrap.

The rear heat shields cover the cats (secondary cats on your car, only cats on my 1999). Those can be fixed by replacing the bolts that hold the shields on.

The easiest way I have found to locate these rattles is to get under the car with a rubber mallet and pound the exhaust until you hear a rattle. Then touch each of the heat shields until the rattle stops and you've found your problem. Of course this should all be done with a cold car. (The cats get super hot)

  • 2 months later...

I had a loud rattle from the right rear on my car when I bought it. I checked all the heat shields but could never pinpoint the source of the rattle. An independent Porsche/BMW shop in town was able to fix it though. It turned out to be a "misaligned exhaust system." Fortunately, this was only about a 100 dollar repair. I actually only asked them to diagnose it, but the mechanic said it only took a minute to fix once he found it. I'm not complaining.
