I have followed this site since since 2005 and now I have a question! I have a MY06 997S cab and for the first time I heard loud fan noise coming from the right front when I pulled up. What surprises me is that I have never heard it before, particularly as the journey was not at great speed or excessive temperature. My question how come its never switched on in 3 years and why now?

Both fans should run at the same time in first place, it's recommended to use a PIWIS or similar diagnostic tool to check the fault codes, it's necessary because 997 cooling fan system is totally different than 996. Engine temp. sensor/A.C pressure sensor send a signal to the DME which give it to the fan control box which operate both fans at the same time. You can check the cooling water level and look for any leaks first, but is not an explanation why one of the fans doesn't work. That's why the codes are needed.

If so, they may have performed a factory required update that may be your reason for hearing the right front fan.

My Porsche Dealer performed this factory maintenance the last time I brought my car in for a normal oil change.

Now, the front right fan comes on almost all the time. And it's loud! I never heard this fan come on before, until I had this update done on my car.

Others may know what I'm trying to explain. It has something to do with the software that controls the engine and cooling fans?

Just FYI.

markradogna, it's time to revisit your dealer, there is something wrong with his "factory required update" action probably in the DME. Both fans should run at the same time in the same fan speed depends engine temp. and/or AC pressure. (997/987)

Thanks for your input, the car has not been serviced since last November, as I mention the strange part is that this is the first time the fans have run?

Funny you should say this. Just had my 2006 C2s in for service, was told that the Left front fan is faulty and needs to be replaced, However I can now hear the front Right fan come on which I have never heard before in my 18 months of ownership. ????

Will be 4 years in June for me and I've probably heard my fan(engine compartment I'm guessing???) go on probably twice. Or at least I think that was the one. I thought there was some update awhile back for the engine fan??

Although I never saw a TSB on it - my understanding was that there was a DME program update that corrected the fan from running too often. So, perhaps your fan is more normal.

My MY99 996 rarely comes on even in 100 plus degree weather here in California.

The cooling fan relay module was also updated to a different part number if I remember correctly.

Interesting. I recieved a recall notice for my 05 C2 a few weeks ago. They told me they needed the car for 1 1/2 hrs to do some sort of cooling fan modification.

My engine cooling fan (rear) turns on quite often after driving around town. But my front radiator fans only turn on if the AC is on or it's otherwise really warm. Personally I like the engine compartment fan coming on - can't hurt to keep it cooler in there given little natural airflow.

Interestingly, I did have an issue where my left radiator fan didn't turn on and the right one worked harder. It went to high speed often. Ends up a rock was jamming the left. Once that was cleared out, both run togther now. The fans are pretty quiet at low speed. You just might not have heard them until it went to high.
