rear spolier failure

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and new to Porsches. I just bought a 2002 Carrera 4S from a very good friend and he had the rear spoiler mechanism replaced because it used to make a grinding noise. Now, the spoiler works fine but does not go down after it goes up at high speed and the rear spoiler failure light keeps coming on. The dealer has already checked and replaced the mechanism again and they cannot seem to find the problem. When operating manually, it does go up and down okay. I've checked online and there have been many instances of the rear spoiler failure but I haven't found any that helped. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

:welcome:

Try swapping the two relays. They are identical so they can be swapped.

You will find them on relay panel support 2 - which is behind a carpet panel behind the rear seats.

Relay position 3 is Extend and relay position 9 is Retract.

If the problem changes to a raising problem after the swap then you have found your bad relay.

Hi Loren,

Thank you so much. I am going to give that a try. I've never had a Porsche before and reading through these forums gets me a little scared about what I got myself into but the car is a blast to drive and I understand why people get addicted to these cars. It's funny but the friend that sold me the Carrera 4S has a 1987 911 turbo and he actually likes the older ones a lot better.

I used to have only Saabs since the old whale tails of 1987. They also had their share of glitches but they were a blast to drive also.

Thank you again and I'm going to give it a try and see.

Also, as soon as I can I'll try to upload a photo of my C4S. I must say that this forum is really great.

Thank you again.

Hi Loren,

Mine is inconsistent. It come on as soon as I start driving. Even at low speed the wing would go up when I get that message. Or it works fine for a few days of driving. Is it still the relays? If it is, then do you have part numbers. I have the bose sub back there, don't want to open it multiple times. Might as well replace both at the same time. I'm hoping that it is not some other control module or something.

Thanks.

Wow. That was so fast. I assume the relays are the only possible problem then?

It is a "likely cause" assuming no damage to spoiler, electrical connectors, or microswitches.

Which is why I said to swap them and see if anything changed.

If no changes, then Durametric, a Porsche PST2, or Porsche PIWIS tester will help find the exact problem quickly.

Thanks Loren. I decided to buy new relays since it's only $40. It's gonna be at least $200 for dealer to plug my car into their computers.
