Muffler Removal

Hi all, in the middle of removing the muffler, but I'm confused about what to do with the top bracket.

I have the Bentley manual, and all it says is to undo the two nuts, which makes sense, as once you undo the other bolts that hold it to the muffler the bracket seems to just be clamping the muffler in place. I did that, however the exhaust still seems like it's held up by something despite having already unbolted everything else. I can't tell if maybe that bracket is still leaning against the muffler and causing it to therefore be stuck or what.

So what should I do? Does the muffler generally plop out of its spot once everything's loosened or does it take considerable force? Or do I need to do something more with the bracket?

Pleas ignore the red marks from the image I borrowed, I'm talking about the stuff in the blue box.

Excellent question im in the same spot as im trying to take the gearbox out and cant seem to dislodge the exhaust at all yet i have undone everything i can see , i seem to recall that to remove the muffler someone posted on another forum that the rear bumper needed removal please help as this sounds a bit extreme to me :cheers:

Am I safe in assuming you have gotten the two nuts off the center studs on the bracket circled in blue?

I took care of this a while back (obviously had to get the muffler off to do the IMS) - my problem was all the clamps were rusted and all the pipes were seized so I couldn't undo them....which made it impossible to move the muffler back enough to slide the studs out of that bracket. I ended up unbolting the headers (replaced them anyway) and removing the bumper to drop the exhaust as one unit:

Removing the rear bumper is not absolutely necessary for muffler removal, but it does make things much easier.

If you have removed the two nuts from the bolts in the blue circle (those are the hardest with the rear bumper still on), the you have to remove part # 12 and loosen and/or remove parts number 17 and/or 13, then remove the two nuts (#14) that are on the two studs of the plate on each side at part #21 as it goes through the oblong or somewhat circular metal rod.

That will allow you to remove the muffler by pulling it back by grabbing and slightly rotating the top of the muffler towards the rear and down, so that the bar (#11) on which the two studs are mounted can be pulled back far enough to clear the holes of part #5 (near part #14).
