MY 1999 C2 questions

Recommended Posts

A good friend came across a low mileage, '99' C2 with 22k miles on it; one owner in excellent shape. The owner is looking to get $20K for and my friend asked if he should pursue it.

I haven't owned a 996, but haven owned 2 boxsters (a 99 and an 06) both of which have performed flawlessly.

Having said that, I know early M96 engines had issues--particularly '99' models that might have had the liners pressed in or the "D " chunking problems.

My question is are there enough problems with the '99' to stay away from and look for something a bit newer, or pursue a car like this if you get it at good price. Since this is my friend's first Porsche, I'm trying to be up front with him on all of the potential issues so he can make the best choice possible.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I bought a 99 C2 Cab with low miles (28K) 2-1/2 years ago. The car was and still is in exceptional condition and I have had no problems with it - just normal oil/filter changes, tires (which were noisy), etc.

Do as Loren says and get a PPI done on the car. There have been cars that have had issues but there are also a lot of them out there working perfectly.

They are a blast to own and drive and at that price you can't go too far wrong. It makes me want to go out and get another one!

Just purchased a 1999 C2 cab with 27,000 miles, 6 speed, 18" chromed turbo wheels. Car is in great shape and I had a new clutch, RMS, and LN IMS bearing retrofit kit installed (About 5K). The original owner drove it hard at times but the engine does not use much oil. Inspection of the replaced parts indicates the IMS bearing was in excellent condition (i.e., no signs of wear or wobbling or seal issues). Clutch was almost down to the rivets and I had the shop replace the flywheel as well. I have only had the car for about a month, but I am very pleased with the performance, looks, and the ability to drive with the top down or with the hard top attached. My P indy shop indicated that the car was in top notch condition for this 996 with M96 engine. Please read the post on the high mileage 996s and you will see that many early units have exceeded 100K miles w/o many problems. I wold be very interested in that car assuming that a good and competent PPI was completed. :D
