Cleaning the engine safely

It's getting pretty dusty and dingy under there.

I did a search but couldn't find anything regarding cleaning up the engine compartment.

Any tips? Thanks!

What I have done to keep my engine clean is to warm it up first. Then remove the air box and filter. Put a plastic baggie over the alternator and put plastic wrap secured with a heavy rubber band over the air intake. Also, I wrap and protect the electric plug to the air sensor. I then spray everything with Simple Green and let it sit for few minutes but not long enough to dry. I then use a garden hose and with a pressure spray to wash everything. I have had very good luck with this method and apparently have never done any harm. Engine looks great. Clean the air filter box separately.
