Boxster not starting

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

Replaced the sensor and still wont start.

This car has had an engine transplant and the engine turned out to have a screwed ims so it has been replaced along with a seized oil pump and broken chain guide. the engine is a 2004 boxster S variocam NOT variocam+ car is a 98 boxster.

Parts replaced are as follows

full wiring loom 2002

Boxster S engine supposed to be 2002 turned out to be 2004

ABS pump module

Cluster 2002

fuel pump to a non return type(just encase the flow rates were different)

DME 7.8 and reprogrammed to boxster S for boxster 2.7

Alarm box and transponder from the same car as the DME

What its NOT

transponder alarm issues the engine turns over

fuel and spark have been checked and if i put my foot on the accelerator and pump it the engine trys to stay running

There is NO CEL or codes from a basic code reader

Engine had to be completely disassembled and re assembled to change IMS so anything goes really

Cams Checked for timing however there is a slim possibility they are on the wrong banks i'm sure that would give me a code though

Is compression a possibility.

This is a 2 year project that has finally came to an end the car has been fully re-sprayed in flip paint and will be 1 of a kind if I ever finish it before my wife makes me get rid of it( I am running out of time)

Please Help

Ross

Any thoughts on bad fuel car has been standing for 2 years and has had the same 1/2 tank all the time

Reading through the forum bad crank position sensors come up alot is this the one at the end of the engine taking a measurement off the flywheel. Do you think it could be this?

Yes, the gas is definitely an issue as it will gum up the injectors; you need to drain the tank, flush it, and then purge the system to get rid of the old stuff. And people ask why they should use fuel stabilizer......

The crank position sensor reads from a shutter wheel on the back of the flywheel; if the sensor goes out, it usually throws a code.

when i tested for fuel flow it did look quite yellow

I Will drain it out run some redex fuel adative through it and add some new fuel next week

Some people on this forum have been having crankshaft sensor issues without codes is there a way to test

*******Problem Solved******** (Almost)

I turns out that even though on inspection the cams were in correctly I accidently put 4-6 exhaust cam in 180 degrees out so looked right from end but not.

Now the car starts when there is no oil in it but wont with oil in it and I also get the following codes

P0300

P0304

P0305

P0306

which my basic code reader tells me are misfires on 4,5,6 and multiple misfires. anyone got any ideas what could cause this

Check the coil pack connectors and possibly the coil pack themselves on Cylnders 4-5-6.

Because you have spun this engine over with the cam that far out, I would also first run a leak down test on all cylinders, you may have some bent valves............

And never start one of these without oil in it.

Thanks for the speedy response

It also has run a couple of times with oil in it but It will backfire on application of throttle it back fires in the inlet manifold.

I don't have access to a leak down tester but compression tested it recently the engine had uniform compression of 200 across all pistons.

I will swap the coils to the other side see if that throws up different codes.

I was wondering if it could be anything to do with the variocam mine is a variable vain system i think as there is no chain other than the drive chain linking the cams

Gotta ask: Are you sure your DME and the engine are compatible? The later engines use a somewhat different VarioCam system and the DME's for one are not directly compatible with the other.................you note is was "reprogrammed", but are you sure it is correct?

Just a little update as it always annoys me when someone fixes something and doesn't report back what the fault was. One bank was out of timing and once that was sorted it ran like a dream. exhaust cam bank 2
