First Post - Need Advice on First 911 Purchase

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I'm ready to trade in my 2008 Cayman S for a 911. I have always dreamed of owning a 911 since I was 10 when I had a Silver 911 Matchbox car. Also, the extra HP and backseats (small as they are) would be a welcome change from the Cayman.

Here's my issue. I test drove a half dozen CPO cars at dealers this past weekend and I'm down to 2 finalists, both are manual shifts, comparably equiped, in mint condition with clean carfax's, and no paintwork:

1) 2008 911 - 23K miles, CPO

2) 2009 911 - 8K miles, CPO

The price difference is about $8K between the two. I'm not filthy rich but I can afford either car with my trade-in. I also won't be tracking the car and I don't drive particularly agressively; this car will primarily be used on weekends. So... my questions are:

1) Is it worth the extra $8K to get the 997.2?

2) Are there issues with 2009 built 997.2s? I'm concerned reading about the potentially high oil consumption (did Porsche work this out by MY2010?), tailpipe soot buildup, and potential fuel pump recall - though since it's under warranty not a big deal.

Basically, I'm trying to decide if I should save the $8K and get the last of the 997.1 which won't have the oil and soot issues and should have the IMS issues ironed out, or should I get the 997.2 and get the more fuel efficient and powerful new engine and risk early build DFI engine issues?

Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes. I would go with the 09.

- More HP - An 09 C2 is essentially equivalent to a 05-08 C2S

- Better fuel consumption because of DFI

- Leftover warranty

- LED tail lights / headlights

- Better resale value

- No IMS to worry about

2) Are there issues with 2009 built 997.2s? I'm concerned reading about the potentially high oil consumption (did Porsche work this out by MY2010?), tailpipe soot buildup, and potential fuel pump recall - though since it's under warranty not a big deal.

So far so good. I have an early build 2009 C2S and it burns less oil than my 996 did. The soot thing lasted for the first 5K miles but now is perfectly fine. They changed my HPFP on the recall during my last visit but it did not cost me anything. On the DFI engine, there was some talk about valves gunking but so far it is unsubstantiated - and I'll take that ove the IMS issue any day.

But both cars are great cars.

Just my 0.02,

T.

6 weeks ago I was in the same situation. I was interested in 2 or 3 2008, 2 2009 and 1 2010 cars, all of them were "S" models and CPO cars. I bought the 2010, because low miles (2,945) it had 5 years warranty (3 years remaining factory and 2 years CPO), and/or 97,055 miles remaining on the warranty.

As others have stated 997.2 (2009+) cars have many improvements over the 997.1

New 9A1 engine has:

  • DFI
  • No IMS
  • Engine has 40% fewer moving parts
  • 30 more HP on the

Suspension was improved

PCM & Nav system upgraded and improved (fewer menu and sub-menu options)

Get the 2009 it is worth the additional 8K
