Need help with boxster idle please

Recommended Posts

i have a 1997 986 boxster with 50,000 miles

I was having an issue after the car warmed up were if would stall out any time i had to stop, light, stop sign idle etc....

i removed the throttle body cleaned it and reattached it, now as far as i can tell it idles and does stall but cant drive it cause each time i rev up the gas the rpm goes up and would stay around 4,000 rpms if i didnt reach around and push down the throttle cable in the engine comaprtment. Due to that havent taken out of drive way yet. it seems to be moving freely and it was fine until i took it apart

anythoghts would be great

Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak. I would recheck everything you did when you removed the throttle body.

Sounds pretty dangerous! Some binding in your throttle cable?

I see no ransom for the throttle cable to be stuck. I did nothing to it and if pushed down by hand it idles fine it's only when depressing the gas that it goes up and stays up until I use my hand to depress the cable in engine. ( nothing to do with the pedal )

Try disconnecting the cable from the throttle body and see if the car does the same thing when you manually operate the throttle; if it does, it is not the cable.

Another possibility is the idle air valve (IAV). They tend to gum up over time and when stuck open can allow air in that results in a strong surge in RPM's.

I have successfully taken them apart and cleaned before putting the IAV back in. Well worth the exercise as this is a relatively expensive part, going for well over $200.
