2005 Cayenne S Engine Knocking 91k miles 4.5L V8

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just bought a 2005 Cayenne S 4.5L V8 with 91k miles and I couldn't hear the engine well-enough when I bought it but now that I'm in a quieter area, it's much more evident that the engine has a knock and I wanted to ask for your help in identifying the problem and any possible solutions (hopefully affordable - although admittedly scared of the new engine stories I'm reading in these forums).

Here is an 0:08 video of the engine running which should give you an idea of the sound:

Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

Thanks!

Dont want to scare you but this issue every Cayenne owner is worried about. If you search here for piston slap or scored cylinder you will find a lot of messages.

This noise i am very familar with. It happens with my first cayenne s. Solution is: you will have to rebuilt the engine. No need to say this is expensive. In which country you are located?

I still dont believe it the water pump. Sounds much more serious. Are you driving the car? Any sign of smoke when you starting? Did you check your oil level? Anything missing? How is the knocking when your engine is cold and how it sounds when its warm?

BAD NEWS guys... I drove the car for about 2hrs today going from one mechanic to the next for opinions and by the end of my trip, the check engine light came on and the engine started really struggling and shaking and I got P0300 and P0307 misfire codes!  :(

P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0307: Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected

Is my engine hopeless?!

Ooouch!

Any recourse going back to the seller? I don't know Illinois law regarding used car sales. Is there an implied 30 day warranty? Was the seller a Porsche dealership, private party, random used car dealership.

As clean as the engine looks on a 91,000 mile car, I suspect it was dressed up just for the sale.
