I just purchased a 2001 C4 with about 60,000 miles on it. In the first few days of ownership, I got a couple random whiffs of a gas smell that I suspected was coming from the car, but couldn't pinpoint it. Yesterday, I noticed a small puddle of gas under the front of the car, between the front wheels. I filled up on this day and it's the first I've noticed anything leaking.

There has been no more leaks, but I definitely smell gas when near the fuel door now. 

Any ideas on what might be causing this? I've searched the forum but can't find anything on point. The car seemed to be driving fine and fuel economy was on par with the EPA estimates. 

Is it safe to drive or do I need to tow it to a shop?

A couple things, did it happen after you filled the car? It could be that fuel dripped into the scupper and out scupper drain.

 

Is it the fuel cap installed improperly and venting fumes. That should show up as failing the internal test and give you a CEL 'Check Engine Light'.

 

lastly it could be the fuel filler neck at the top of the filler port on the inside of the fender.

 

I can't recall if there is a drain hose coming from the scupper drain that should poke out of the belly pan. It could be scupper fuel leaking on the top/inside surface of the belly pan and leaking some distance from the drain.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up driving it home 450 miles without issue and took it to the dealer.

 

Turned out to be the fuel filler neck gasket. A $30 part but $300+ in labor plus half a tank of fuel drained. 

 

UPDATE: Nope, that wasn't it. Still strong smell of fuel.
