manual trans or clutch problems?

Recommended Posts

I've had my 997 (non S) for about 4 months now. Have about 3500 miles on it. Starting to experience difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gears. Seems like maybe the clutch isn't fully releasing. No problems in 3rd or higher. Also having issues with clutch engaging smoothly in 1st gear. Anybody with similar problems?

hi,

it has been almost 5 month since i get my 997. i have the shortshift option. my dealer told me that with the shortshift option it is normal that you need more effort for engaging gear. however. when the oil temp becomes high. the gear shift becomes softer. the reverse gear is the only gear where i suffer. there is changing trick for that:) ( you need to do your move at one time).

other then that from neutral to first gear i do not have any problems. but sometimes while going slow from 2nd to 1st gear it becomes hard to change but anyway i think this is quite normal.

don't worry and let the technicians check it

I "fixed" the first gear problem at least while I'm at a stop. Just release the brake pedal so the car rolls a bit and 1st gear pops right in. The 2nd gear issue is a little more elusive. A friend suggested that 2nd gear is usually engaged at higher rpms than other gears. He suggested trying shifting at lower rpms (3000). That helped some. I did notice that since the engine loves to spin, it really doesn't wind down quickly. If your at 4000 -5000 in 1st and then shift to 2nd, the engine really needs to get down to around 2500-3000 range to get a nice shift. It takes a little longer than expected for the engine to slow to that speed. I guess I just need to get use to it.

Guys, from the UK, had similar problem on my 997S. There is now a TSB to improve this. The gear selector cable (?) can become kinked on entry to the gearbox making gear selection difficult, and even premature failure in theory. The TSB will re-route and bracket the cable - it makes all the difference !

Take that new yellow beauty to the dealer and have them fix it! You should not have to deal with this, the car is under warranty....

Surprise, surprise, there is a fix. I brought my car in today for some other warranty issues and when I picked it up, I found out my shift cable and bracket was replaced. It was under open campaign #w557. The parts replaced were shift bracket 997 424 165 03 and cables 997 424 041 01. The shift lever is very firm again. It was getting sloppy feeling. 2nd gear feels a lot better now. 1st felt very stiff but the temps were really cold here in Illinois (28 F, burrrr) and I really didn't drive far enough to warm it up. :clapping:
