Floor Jack Recommendation?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting a new floor jack - one that will work on the Boxster and 997, as well as for my truck ('88 Toyota 1/2 ton pickup). Any recommendations? Sears? Harbor Freight? I've seen good things about the Harbor Freight aluminum racing jack in the past (at http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/disp...emnumber=91039) and was wondering if that's still good. Anything else I need? I seem to remember reading something somewhere a long time ago about a hockey puck...

Loren - I didn't see any jacks in the reviews, but feel to move this if you like

Hi,

I use a 3 ton Craftsman Hydraulic Floor Jack, Model #102980. I also use a Jack Tool which slips in place of the traditional heel of the jack and accepts the Porsche jacking point. This jack is low enough for both my Lotus Esprit and my Boxster. Hope this helps.

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

I have seen that Harbor Freight jack in person and it looks good but is skimpy on lift height. You will probably be much happier with the 17.5in lift of http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Disp...temnumber=47246

This one looks VERY good in person :D

I'd recommend you get a jack that has 3-4 inches more lift than the jack stands you intend to use on the car. I find my 10.5in - 15.5in jack stands to be adequate but could use a few more inches than the 14.5in maximum lift of my floor jack.

P.S. after about 20 uses, my hockey puck is badly split - almost bad enough to make me walk over to the cabinet and get out my spare hockey puck :)

The harbor freight jack that you reference is fine. FYI it is not a rapid pump. This one:

is a rapid pump.

The nice thing about a race jack is that if you ever lower your car it will still fit under the jack points.

You do not need a hockey puck with either of these jacks as they both come with a rubber pad.

I have 2 floor jacks that I am pretty pleased with.

A Sears Craftsman 2 ton racing jack. It is low profile and light-weight for easy moving around the garage. You can pick it up without getting a hernia. It cost around $169-

The other jack is from Costco. It is a 3.5 ton and also low profile with lifiting height thru 22". I believe it cost about $89-. The only drawback is the weight. You can not pickup it up, it must be rolled around only (you will get a hernia with this one).

I just bought a jack last week at NAPA.

It was a $250 jack that they had on sale for $160. I suspect that the sale is still on.

It is a low-profile jack that goes under the 996 easily. It has the double pump or whatever it is where it goes up quickly with no weight on it.

It is also very heavy, so you can't really pick it up.
