snow tires (and wheels?)

Recommended Posts

;) I have an appointment next wednesday to have Dunlop Winter tires mounted.

Should I get a second set of wheels? The parts manager said NO. Of course this may be because he does not have wheels in stock.

The Tequipment catalog has a set of four 18 in wheels (part no 955 044 600 05).Any idea what these should cost? Available on line?

Thanks.....

I've had problems in the past with wear and tear on tires and wheels as you mount/dismount them. This year I'm not running snows on the Porsche, but on our other cars I now have dedicated winter wheels and tires. It's so easy to switch and store them myself and a set of winter tires will last me at least 3-4 seasons before I need to get a new set mounted.

It is much easier to have the snows mounted on rims. Then, when Winter approached, just swap the wheels and you're done. Same in the Spring.

Lots of options for purchasing these. Try the dealer. There are four Tequipment part numbers for 18" wheels, Turbo or S, with or without tire pressure monitoring.

These run about $2,200, as shown in this E-Bay ad, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=2452059638 Another source to check is Wheel Enhancement.

My preference was for the 17" Cayenne wheel, but these won't be available in the US until the Spring, too late.

I just bought 17" mille 1's from tirerack with Blizzak LM22s on them and after 1k in the mn snow, I'm very happy with them. 17s are probably a better bet than 18s in winter. Total cost around 1600. The blizzaks appear to hav superior ice traction over the dunlops but are H rated so no speeding.

Thanks... I bought these from Brandywine Porsche via Ebay.

  • 1 month later...

 That was a good deal! I paid $2,399.00 for my set from Suncoast Porsche after PCA and rennlist discount!!! :grr:

IMHO it is still the best investment you can make for winter driving! I know from experience a few weeks ago driving through a mini-blizzard in NW WI. I must have counted at least 5 18 wheelers in ditches, on their sides and not to mention at least as many cars and yes 1 4 X 4 in similar circumstances! My CS handled very well and secure with the Dunlap M2's indeed :D
