How to remove foam covering from the stock air filter

As the title states: How to remove the foam covering from the stock air filter?

I know how to access the engine compartment but once u could see top part of the engine, how do I "open" the airbox? and remove the foam?

There are 2 metal clips on the side. Push them out and then slide the tray out. It will slide out in two stages (like rollers on a cabinet drawer) which just the cover and plastic first and then the filter slides out in part 2. Easy to do. Box is on the left side of the car shown here in top of picture (rectangular box with label on it)

Remove old filter. Suggest you also vacuum down inside the air filter box (use and extension to get way down in there). Drop in new engine air filter. Slide closed and re-fasten clips.

Will take you 2min at most once you have the engine bay opened up.

does removing the foam allow more particles to the filter and dirty it quicker?

Always wondered about this

It probably will get dirty quicker but i think its main purpose is to reduce sound.

Most aftermarket filters designed for 986 don't come with the foam anyway.

This is true. Aftermarket oiled filters such as BMC and K&N do not have a layer of foam. Some people who put them in think they have more power because the induction sound is louder. The 996 series cars do not have a layer of foam because their intakes are in the rear of the car. On the other hand the intake on a Boxster is right next to your left ear.

True, come to think of it, my e46 BMW came with a piece of foam wrapped around the filter

Just simply ripped it off so 1. it breaths better and 2. sounds better :)

Suppose theres really no point to it other than noise

Bisimoto Engineering in Chino Hills california recently ran a dyno test on there boxster with and without the Snorkel and they came up with a 5hp gain without the snorkel... I should have asked them to run a stock filter versus a K&N or Evo.
