  1. The noise is a because of an impedance mismatch between the grounds for power and the audio-input lines. Some devices are worse than others. The reason that you did not hear it with the FM modulator is that the audio output of the Sirius was not going directly to the input of the radio amplifier, it was going to the FM modulator. To fully remove the noise requires fine tuning of the choke (that little lump on the wire) on the ground loop isolator. You will find that at speed, the whine that is left in the system is usually masked by road noise.
  2. Do you have the Bose amplifier? If so on the row of 3 connectors that the Becker Blue connector is plugged in the back of the radio, make sure that 3rd connector on the end of that row is plugged in as well. That is power for Bose. The middle connector is for control of the CD changer, but since you got the Aux enabled on the radio, I assume that this plug is not connected. Do you have the pins in the blue becker connector inserted correctly or is the polarity reversed on the audio input connectors? What sort of connection do you have at your ipod end? Is it through the headphone jack or through the bottom connector? Have you used this radio with a CD changer? Did it sound OK with the changer?
  3. Did you also program the key memory button as well? That is the Key button on the seat memory panel/
  4. When you program the seat memory buttons, make sure that the car is turned on and that the Gearshift lever is in REVERSE. This will program in the right mirror tilt. (this is in your owners manual, but who reads those things anyway...)
  5. In many cases, when a 996/986 goes in for a RMS replacement, the tech will also replace the IMS seal. This seal has a little O ring that if improperly installed will leak like a sieve. Is this work being done by a Porsche dealer? If so make sure that the RMS replacement is the latest one that uses the Cayenne RMS seal.
  6. OK, very simple. Do you have the inline splice taps from Radio shack yet? If not go get them. Click here for info on these taps On the red wire, the little black box on the wire is a fuse, leave that on, and trim the end of the wire so that there is no bare wire sticking out from the insulation. The red wire will go to the green black line on the phone harness. On the black wire, clip off the terminal connector on its end, and splice that wire to the brown wire on the phone harness. That is it. The only issue you may have is ground loop whine on the audio, and if you do, get the ground loop isolator cable from Radio Shack and place it between the iPod Audio cable and the Becker audio cable. Click here for info on the Ground Loop Isolator Good luck with it.
  7. In the phone harness I free up the ground cable (brown) and switched power (green black. So that it charges only when the key is in the ignition). I will not use the connector itself. Yes In the ipod power cable, I will also not use the connector itself. It has 2 other wires black and red. So should I use the split connector to hook up the switched power cable from the phone harness to feed into both the black and red cable from the ipod power cable? I assume that you already have the audio signal lines connected to the Becker cable. If you do, then are the Red/black wires on the iPod cable for power? If they are, then the red one would go to the green/black line on the Phone harness, and the black one would go to the brown ground line. Now where do I plug the ground cable from the phone harness? the ground wire on the phone harness is the 12V- line. You should post a picture of the iPod cable, so I can see what it looks like.
  8. Yes, I have Michelin Pilot Sports, and they tend to have a flat spot thump for about 20 miles this time of year. they seem to need to be above 95 F to start feeling good.
  9. Normal transition for Variocam. Easiest fix is just to make sure that you drive at a fast enough speed so the engine is always above 3200 rpm :D
  10. You could run the cable down the center console and out through the ash tray. See my DIY for details. Or you could drill a hole in one of the front console storage bins and drop the mini phone plug down through there. That way you can store the ipod in the bin. The bins are held in with tabs and pull right out.
  11. No, you don't have to take anything apart, just crimp the power line from the phone connector to the power lead on the end of your ipod connector, and the same with the ground wire. Look at the end of the ipod cable, it should just have a red and black wire to connect to the car's power. The phone harness is just laying in the back of the center console. To get at it just pull off the carpet cover on the side of the console. it is just held in with plastic clips. On the phone power cable, the brown wire is ground, red/green is unswitched 12V+, and green/black is switched 12v+. Pick the power source line you want depending if you want power to the ipod all of the time or just with the key on. The wire taps just fit over the source wire, and the feeder wire sticks in one end, then when you close the clip it splices the two wires together for you.
  12. Check the DIY sections. There are notes on how to lift the car up on jack stands, and how to replace the serpentine belt. There are also maintenance checklists for your car. Essentially the 60K service consists of changing the oil, filter, air filter, pollen (cabin) filter, plugs (on some cars, check the maintenance checklist for your car), and serpentine belt. If it has been 2 years or longer since your last brake fluid change, that should also be done. That is essentially it. Changing the belt is very easy. Budget about 2-3 hours to do the work and about $150 for parts and fluids.
  13. That is one way to do it, but you can also just use a Wire Tap-in squeeze connector from Radio Shack to connect the 2 wires.
  14. Either way is about the same effort. The rear bumper cover comes off with about 10 small philips head screws, and the heat shields on both side have about 4 bolts each. Taking the bumper cover off makes placing the mufflers somewhat easier to do, but there is no gain in tightening the 3 nuts that hold each muffler to the engine support bracket. You still have to crawl under the car to get to them.
  15. The cell phone power connector is a good source of switched power. The only issue in using this source is that you may induce a ground loop in the audio signal cable. This will cause a whine in the audio. To fix that, you will need to run the audio from your iPod cable through a ground loop isolator cable. These are available from Radio Shack. While this cable won't completely remove the noise from the line, it will attenuate it so that you won't hear it except at very loud volumes. Here is another article on iPod integration
  16. The jackpoints are the same as the 996, but you can also just drive the car up on ramps to get the same access.
  17. Rattles: Yes, it is the left rear for your car. Keep in mind that there is still going to be a little fluid stuck in the ABS manifold that you will not be able to get out without using the a PST to command the individual circuit valves to open, but it is not much. Cheers :jump:
  18. You hypothesis is correct only if you were changing the brake fluid in the northern hemisphere. Since you are in Australia, you can compensate for southern hemisphere gravitational pull by inverting the car. Then starting with the left wheel as viewed from the front of the car would be correct. Lastly, when re-torquing the wheel lug nuts be sure to accomplish this by using only a left-handed torque wrench.
  19. an in-line FM modulator will work just fine on your 987. These FM modulators connect at the antenna connector on the back of the radio. At worst, you may have to get a connector adapter for the Modulator, but it will work just as on the car you took it off of.
  20. All the 30K service consists of is an oil change, pollen filter change, and the air filter change.
  21. A 30K service is an oil/filter, cabin filter (the 15K service) change plus replacement of the air filter. If you do it yourself, the oil and filters will set you back $120 and an hour of your time. If you have a dealer do it, it will set $800-$1200. Look in the DIY sections for instructions on how to do it. Lastly change your oil (i.e. the 15K service) every 15K miles or 1 year which ever comes first. So, no do not skip the 30K maintenance interval.
  22. I use these on all of my cars and get 900 mpg! EPA certified! :eek: Honestly, these things have been around since the Model T. Save your money.
  23. I recommend removing the Speedometer A signal wire (pink/grey) from pin 6 of the relay connector. It is easier and cleaner to remove it from the speedometer signal jumper plug bundle (slot 23 on the relay support bracket) instead of the back of the relay connector. You can also just snip the wire, but make sure you have the right pink/grey wire, as several devices (like the cab top electronics) use the Speedometer signal A signal to control things. Cut the wrong wire, and something may not work anymore. The reason that I recommend the wire instead of the diode is because what you want to do is to disable the 27-45 mph automatic "quiet mode", but still have full functionality of the manual switching into "quiet" mode. By removing the speed signal from the relay, for all intents, the relay thinks that the car is always stationary, so it will not trigger the automatic mode. Damaging the relay by cutting the diode will certainly work, but that also introduces the uncertainly of the relay sticking in the quiet mode.
