  1. Hi - I'd be interested in the numbers. I think they would look sharp on the car. What would you want for them? Thanks, Craig
  2. I changed my 05 987 to the Cayman side vents and had them painted to match. I was debating black v Guards Red, but I think this works... Let me know if you need more pix/different angle. Had the vents sent from Sunset Porsche. They are shipped in primer grey and all ready for a spray at your fave spray shop.
  3. My 05 now has 84500 KM on the clock... as LeftCoaster says - it was bought to drive not wash (but I wash it as well :) http://www.renntech.org/forums/style_emoti...ault/tongue.gif
  4. FWIW, if you are going to store it outside you should save/repurpose some cash and invest in winter tires instead. My spanking new Blizzak LM25s seem to work dandy in the light snow we've had so far - looking forward to a bit more snow to give them a good traction test...
  5. Not the most 'green' solution out there... but here goes... On my uncles farm our family stores things like trailers, snowmobiles, quads, in-progress auto projects, and various other sorts of things that mice like to chew on. Each fall my uncle tosses another few handfuls of grain heavily laced with pest killers - since he started doing this 25 years back he hasn't had any real problem with mice chewing wires, seats, or anything else mice like to chew on. It's pretty much impossible to mouse-proof the country, so sometimes the brute force approach works. There are also ultrasonic options that I've read about - they will make a nose similar to fingernails on blackboard that is supposed to chase rodents away, but I'm not aware of anyone using these - it might work for you if you have green sensibilities?
  6. Excellent suggestions all - I live in Calgary (5 hours north of Great Falls, Montana, 3 hours with radar, for you Southerners :), so the nearest alternate dealers are, umm, Edmonton (2.5 hours) and Vancouver (15 hours) - the joys of living in a lightly populated area. So... I did some searching and found this website: http://www.ohiolemonlaw.com/auto-manufacturer-phone-list.htm which lists North American contact information for all car manufacturers. I called the Porsche number and spoke with a nice lady who said 'I know who to send you to, one second'. I asked if this was the contact centre and she says 'no, but this will be the right person for you'. I wound up speaking with the managing VP of the contact centre, a very nice lady from Toronto but now based in Atlanta, who has many years with Porsche. She asked for all the details, was very helpful, and said 'this sounds like total confusion and we can help with this'. The only thing is she wants me to send the entire transaction in writing, and send it to Detlev vonPlaten, the new President and CEO of PCNA, formerly GM of Porsche France. The letter will land on her desk next, but she wants Detlev to be directly informed of some of the challenges that he gets to fix. Westcoaster - I used your observation about the temperature variance in my 3 page letter (not attributed to anyone) - Calgary is a prime example of a -15c to +20c in 12 hours temperature change, and an excellent point. Hopefully this works out - it seems a bit like using a sledgehammer to push a marshmallow through a keyhole, but maybe it will help things like this from happening to others in future. Cheerio PS - Detlev's bio can be found here: http://jalopnik.com/359587/porsche-announc...nister-of-bruce
  7. I know - a car designed in Germany, assembled in Finland, tested in Sweden, sold in North America with a North American warranty - valid in US and Canada - I checked. The only think I can think of now is to get the 'weather can invalidate warranty' clause in writing and get it run through the courts - a sad state of affairs, considering the part cost in total is under $300. That's $300 this time, and whatever else they decide is caused by 'weather' in future - which could be anything from a leaking valve stem cap to a rear main seal failure on the freeway.... Not that I *want* to do it this way - so if anyone has suggestions on alternate ways to deal with shash (not sure where that word came from, but it seems appropriate) such as this I'm all ears. I've never experienced anything like this whatsoever, and it's certainly put me off Porsche - a nice car, with a post-sales attitude that seems to not care about the next sale. This was my 2nd, and maybe last.
  8. The pictures are high-res, and as such don't fit into the 'upload' limit. Full resolution photos are uploaded here - http://picasaweb.google.com/craig.forsberg...illightCrazing# Remember that by viewing these photos you will know more about the problem than PCNA does - their 1-800-por-sche call centre has not asked for any sort of info, they just sat on the request for weeks and then responded with a 'weather invalidates warranty'. I'm waiting on the mailed response for proof...
  9. Howdy, As some of you are aware I purchased a lovely 18 month old Boxster from Houston and had it shipped to Calgary. A couple of days (3?) after it arrived I took the car into the local shop as the taillights had some internal crazing - running your hand on the outside of the lights reveals no defects - it's all internal. The local shop took a couple of pictures, and said 'we need to send this to Porsche as we've never heard of this before'. Weeks went by and I heard nothing, so I went back in to be told 'Porsche hasn't called us back yet', so I raised a call with PCNA. Imagine my surprise to get a voicemail back from them stating 'this is due to temperature change, and as such isn't covered by the new car warranty'. I just received this message today. To recap no one, other than a local service manager, has actually seen the issue in real life, and he stated 'this is weird - I wonder what it is. We'll be in touch'. My next question - what else on my vehicle isn't covered by temperature change? How many people reading this forum live in an area where the temperature never changes? Has anyone else experienced issue with taillights crazing from the inside? To buy a new set of taillights is a couple of hundred dollars, and not a bit deal (and the new ones are all red, which will go well with the Guards Red on the car). I am, however, concerned that they will now start blaming any old thing that goes wrong with the car on weather changes - in my opinion that is total shash, and will certainly have an impact on my next vehicle purchase. In all truth I really do like my Boxster, and it's one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. But my wife has a BMW - while it isn't as fun and exhilarating to drive their service is stellar, and this will certainly be a deciding factor on my next purchase. BMW have offered a reasonable trade-in value if I get the taillights fixed. The local dealer will give me a good bump on the next purchase as well, but life really is too short to live with substandard service and after purchase support.
  10. I tried a few fills with the Husky 94 Ethanol blend and found I get slightly reduced mileage according to the trip computer. I still use it for track days, but have been using other premiums for daily driving - a fair bit of city, some highway jaunts whenever I can fit one it. I don't tend to stick with any one brand for the normal fills. Some Petro-Canada stations also have 94, but it's also an ethanol blend.
  11. The 'plastic gizmos' are indeed sucky - I had one fall out last week, but kept diligently poking at the wee metal ears and finally got one side to come out just that little bit that made the other side also come out - it was a good while of pushing and pulling the Pecker CD24 before it finally came, but it did come out easily once it started moving. As Nickusa says don't forget the one bolt on the RH side of the unit. Once the deck is out of the way it's all smooth sailing - the only thing I would recommend is ensuring that you have some zip ties or velcro handy to secure the modulator - there is lots of room for it, but mot much for anchor points, and if you don't anchor it it will likely wind up underfoot.
  12. I picked up a male and female ISO-FAKRA adapter from a shop in the UK (was tricky to source in North America) to install an IPlug RDS unit for my 987 - If you scroll down to the 3rd picture at this link you can see the male and female FAKRA adapters... http://www.revozport.com/iplug-rds.htm I sourced the IPlug and FAKRA adapters from Auto Comfort in the UK for a better price than Revozport, and much more responsive - Revozport/IPlug has yet to respond to my request for a final price, and Auto Comfort's unit arrived a week after I ordered it... +44 1706822084 info@autocomfort.co.uk
  13. Mine is an 05 987 base - not after the HP, just after more of that lovely noise. Exhaust is next - or is it front sway bar... decisions, decisions (or suggestions - it's all good :)
  14. FWIW, and I realize the last post in here was over a year ago, I just took the baffle out of my 05. The top came out pretty easily, the middle was a bit of a pain, but it suddenly came free, making the bottom one much looser. I broke one tab removing the baffle plate, which is now hanging on the wall of the garage in case it ever goes back in. All told it took maybe 15 minutes, including running back upstairs to the PC to ensure I had the right tabs slated for removal. I used parietta's idea of gutterguard and tiewraps and took it for a quick burn down the street - can hear a slight difference from inside, but a friend did this on his last year and it does sound substantially more throaty from the outside (on his - I need someone to do a drive-by for me - maybe at the Porsche AutoX on Thursday...) Thanks to all for the detailed directions, hints and pictures! :renntech:
  15. So walking out to my (05) 987 this afternoon I noticed 'the string'. As it will be a few days before I can get this to the dealer is it safe to operate the convertible top with the fold placer like this? Thanks!
  16. So what MY is this schema for? I'm looking for a schema for an MY05 - is this it? Alternate question - ant recommendations on which circuit would be preferred to hardwire the Escort radar detector to? Thanks!
  17. It's definitely a bit of a pain. PCNA hasn't responded to the last question as yet, but I think I have a plan... I am going to work out whats been serviced recently, combine that with the CPO warranty inspection, and the local dealership can perform whatever inspections are outstanding to complete the 40k mile service. Having said that does anyone know how one might be able to escalate a call into '1-800-POR-SCHE, Option 3' beyond the first level call answerer? So far they keep apologizing profusely and telling me that someone will be in touch, but so far this 'someone' person has been quiet... I do have to get an 'out of province' inspection performed, but am having that done at a local shop who will also replace the brake fluid prior to next weeks 'advanced driving school' weekend - the first with the new wheels - I'm giddy as a schoolgirl (a 6'3" schoolgirl with a beard :) ) I also received, in todays mail, a 'Welcome to PCNA with your CPO vehicle' welcome kit - a shiny new chrome keyring and a luggage tag, as well as a joint Porsche/AutoCheck Assured Warranty for 'buyback protection'. Wonder if this will help keep the local dealership sated? North America, in PCNA terms, doesn't include Mexico, but Canada is certainly listed. Cheers, Craig
  18. Thanks egs - appreciate the feedback. I've been leaning along that way myself - I want to get something from PCNA that says they will honour the CPO 'valid in North America' warranty regardless of what the local dealer says (the only dealer within a 3 hour drive), but in the interests of 'playing ball' I might give them the 'minor service' checklist and say this is what they can do, and anything else they do is at their own cost and expense - which should be fair enough for them and doesn't get me paying for fluff that they just wanna do... I drove the car back from Vancouver last Wed/Thurs - have had the car for almost a week now - what a great car! It's almost due for another trip across the Rockies just for the twisties and the smell of the trees with the roof down :)
  19. Hi Maurice, Thanks for the pointer - I can never seem to find posts on PPBB, so emailed Abe directly (all us Canadians know each others email addresses ;) His direct thoughts are 'CPO is CPO, and if your local dealer is asking for more they are being p****s'. Now if I can just get someone from PCNA to say the same thing instead of waffling about like civil servants I'll be off to the races... Cheers, Craig
  20. Hi guys, Thanks for provoding tons of reading and advice while I waited ever so patiently for my 05 Boxster to make it to Vancouver from Houston! :renntech: I was quite comfortable with my purchase from Down South knowing there was a CPO warranty attached to the vehicle, and that the CPO warranty is valid in both the US and Canada - makes the decision to move something across the border that much easier. Imagine my surprise when, on stopping by the local dealer to get some overpriced touchup paint that they want to 'inspect' my vehicle to 'baseline' it prior to 'honouring the CPO warranty'. I called and emailed PCNA who informed me, over the phone, that they had heard about some Canadian Independent dealers wanting to perform this inspection, but that it would in no way cause any challenges with the remaining CPO warranty. The inspection, which I was told takes a full day to complete, checks things like 'ensure the right transmission is associated with the vehilcle' and 'verify that the vehicle has never gone into an over-rev situation'. I wasn't actually provided with a checklist of what they would check. In response to my email I received this: "Your warranty is a North American warranty and is valid throughout North America, if your local authorized Porsche dealer requires an inspection then the warranty will be valid once that inspection is completed. " which basically is saying that my North American warranty might not be valid without an additional inspection. The problem I have with an additional inspection being required is what if this inspection turns up something that wasn't found during the CPO inspection - will this obviate the existing warranty? If it doesn't impact the CPO warranty at all I can't see a reason for the additional inspection. If it does impact the warranty why did I pay extra for a vehicle with a CPO warranty that was valid in both the USA and Canada? At any rate this is a bit confusing - if anyone had pointers or suggestions, including a good person or team to contact within PCNA (not faultingt he people who answer the phone, but so far all I've got are apologies for not knowing the answers) I would be ever so appreciative. Cheers, Craig PS - here is a pic of the vehicle near the Kicking Horse Pass region of the Canadian Rocky Mountains - if anyone is looking for a good drive I'd recommend this one - weekly if possible :)
  21. ~500 beans to plug in a widget just seems a bit extreme, considering thats about all it does. I'm currently using a Monster fm modulator, but am waiting for this to arrive: http://www.revozport.com/iplug-rds.htm which will plug into the EU radio antenna lead. the next piece is this: http://www.diceelectronics.com/Merchant/me...=i-MOST-Porsche which is the charging cradle, which will be attached to this - http://www.kudausa.com/kuda_mount_and_hold...005-31-308.html KUDA Mount. The last piece might be this: http://sewelldirect.com/Scosche-iPod-Wirel...-Car-Remote.asp If all you are after is the aux inputs the Iplud RDS, or any other wired FM modulator that will hook up to the EU ISO/FAKRA antenna leads will do the trick... Ultimately this setup will gove me a wired FM Modulator with RDS (displays track info on the radio face) while charging the Ipod, provides a drop-in base unit, attached to a widget holder, and then gets a wireless remote unit that can attach to the steering wheel. All of which came as standard on a buddy's new Ford Ranger 1/4 ton pickup... it's easy to fogure out whicjh is most fun to drive, but why is the Ipod option so much easier for everyone else? Gadz :) Let us know how you make out - you might have the perfect solution rattling around in there somewhere...
  22. I'm waiting for my 987 to arrive, and in all truth I'm kinda glad it's not here (also Calgary) this weekend! ~40 cm on top of a layer of ice had made it a mess for pretty much anyone, let alone a sporty car with a set of jaunty Houston-style winter tires (summer tires anywhere else). I'm making do by taking the wife's 325i to Mount Royal parking lot and letting it do some drifts for cheap entertainment (between finishing basement renos...) What are your plans for winterizing the 977? I'm hoping to find a set of cheap 17s and narrowish tires for the snowy season, and maybe bump up to 19s for the summer - it will all be played by ear tho. I did find someone selling a set of mismatched 17 rims and 'fairly decent' tires (although they won't say what kind they are) - not sure I really trust mismatched, plus it seems just a bit o the 'eurgh' side... Cheers, Craig
  23. Thats a cute car, and it seems like a good deal. I test drove a speed yellow S a couple of years back and it was the closest thing to driving a police car with the lights on - traffic continuously pulled over to let me pass... I could get used to that ;)
  24. Ah, well, it seems there are no tirekickers in Houston. I wound up purchasing the car anyways - a good price, tons of warranty left, and should be here soon. My other car sold to the first test pilot, so the bad news is I now have no car, but the good news is no more dealing with the local Audi weasels! At any rate I'm getting a bit twitchy - been downloading Youtube videos of running Boxsters, reading the manuals, and in short getting myself overhyped for putting my own plate on the car and driving it back from the West Coast... I've been searching around for a few items to make the car just that much more palatable on trips - do any of you long time Boxsterites have any suggestions on 'must have' add ons? I'm considering the Dension ICELink, but $500 seems a bit much to add Ipod capability to a stereo that will likely not get a ton of use. I'm also looking at finding a set of 17' winter rims and tires so the car won't have to spend the entire winter in the garage as this area doesn't get a ton of snow here, but it does get chilly. Cheers,. Craig
