  1. Would love to see more options for repairing Boxster engines, but it doesn't seem to be cost effective. The last time I checked a rebuild on a 914 engine cost $7500 for a basic rebuild and much more for performance builds. How much is a replacement from Porsche again, $8000-9000?
  2. 986 is better looking than the 987, IMO. Looks more like a Porsche to me, though I do like the interior of the 987 much better. Seems like a waste of money. It's probably more cost effective to just buy a used 2005 Boxster instead and get the updated interior.
  3. I washed and dried (by I, I mean my wife. She too decided to gather up my dirty clothing before I exited the shower). The battery was fried, but the phone worked with a new one. The screen is jacked up and it looks like heck. I'm just glad she didn't tyr to iron it.
  4. I'm still a big fan of the 986's looks over the 987 and this prototype. It just looks like a Porsche. 987 looks to much like an MR2 and that thing looks like an S2000. Just my opinion. Now if I could just figure out how to mate a 986 with 987 interior and a 3.8 x51 engine for cheap, I'd be one happy camper. lol
  5. I'm not a math professor, Wall Street investor or Jesus. If you can turn $3000 into the $12,000 needed for an engine replacement in a short period of time, I want you to come manage my finances. :D

  11. Great info. About a month ago my 2000 2.7 blew out a big puff of white oil smoke after starting up the engine for my 4th autocross run. I figured it was probably because oil was very hot and thin. It hasn't happened since, but since the car is at 60,000 miles I figure it will be a good preventive measure.

  13. I'm at 58,000 miles on my 2000 Boxster and getting ready to drive up the east coast from GA to CT and back next month. I have only put 2000 miles on the car since purchase. I'm scared, hold me. :lol:
  14. make sure they are pregapped. They are easy to break while gapping and you will have a pretty paper weight.
  15. I have tracked and autocrossed on both tires on an 05 STi. The Falkens get hot way to fast for DE's and get greasy. They will also wear out a lot quicker than the MX. The MX is widely considered a good street tire for DE/track days. They handle heat well, wear well, and have good wet traction. Though the MX's will be a little slower for the first 3 laps, after that the difference goes away. RT-615 is a great autocross tire in street tire classes for the price, but needs to be sprayed after the first few runs to cool them down. Of those 2 the MX is a better bet for you. In a year or two when you hone your skills and are ready to start really going fast, you can pick up a set of R comps.
  16. Sorry, I don't believe that. You don't believe he saw the show or that they add 3 hp? :lol: Anyway, it's the same with the grounding kits on all the japanese imports, when comparing a grounding kit against a car that has corroded grounds, they "add 5hp". What they really do is restore the original hp. I can take a car with beat plugs and and swap in new iridium plugs and magicly make 3hp. Also, what type of dyno. The margin of error on most dynos covers 3 hp. Blah, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, etc. This discussion is just a horse of a different color, i.e. desnorkle, aftermarket intake, indexing plugs, blah, blah, blah, but it's dead none the less. You want real hp out of a Boxster, engine swap is you only real choice. I came from an 05 STi, with exhaust and a tune I gained 70hp. Strictly bolts on could get you up to 400 whp (stock is 250whp). Normally aspirated cars just don't see those kinds of gains and especially high performance NA cars. They are typically tuned closer to the limits of the head, intake and exhaust design. Usually not much to extract.

  18. You can paint your own calipers very easily for very little money. If I lived near you I'd do it for you. It's pretty easy.
  19. It's easy. Look at the trim ring and find the screw in the upper middle. Remove screw. Gently but firmly remove the ring, not the grill. Once the ring is off, it's time to remove the remove the grill. It has 3 attachment legs, push each one through it's clip then remove the grill. Now look in the hole. You will see the snorkel. Firmly hold it and rock it back and forth while gentle pulling. It will pop out and you will then cut you wrist or hand at this point. Put everything back in reverse and you are done. Now I have no idea if it gives you any horse power (though I have seen a thread that showed several dyno runs with and without and it appeared to be a consistent 5 hp gain). With the design of the snorkel acting as a restrictor and it appear that it would cause a pressure drop at the intake box with a narrow opening and getting wider, not just a silencer as in other cars I've desnorked, I can easily see why it would gain hp. One warning, you will get worse gas mileage. The sound is so wonderful you will stay in throttle as much as possible.
