  1. thanks for the reply :) i used the hex and it just keeps turning and turning, i turned it for a good 5 minutes and nothing was even loose or popped out :( anyone know what i'm doing wrong? I had the same problem with mine. I had to pull and jiggle the headlight as I turned the socket. Also, your bolt may be rounded off, so you may need to try a smaller socket. When you put it back in, make sure the light is seated correctly on the bar that pops it out, so you won't have the same problem.
  2. The warning light is normal. It stays on until you hit 5 mph. No idea what the idea behind that was.
  3. Actually, most of the steel used by everyone -- at least in the engineering/construction industry -- is from Malaysia. It all has to pass ISO/quality inspections to ship as whatever grade steel they're labeling it. There's a good chance it's the same raw material in a half-shaft from Germany versus one from the east. However, the Chinese tend to ignore things like IP rights, human rights, etc., which is why they can produce a half shaft so much cheaper. When you buy real Porsche parts, you may be paying a bit more than you should have to, but you're also paying off the development costs of that part and future designs. Now things like alternators and waterpumps can be had through Autozone, NAPA, etc., but I'm pretty sure those are rebuilt from what were Porsche cores. I put a NAPA waterpump on my car because it was $100 less than ordering a new one from Sunset ($200 less than what my local dealership was asking), it had a lifetime warranty, and it was in stock and available versus a week away from a dealership. What I HATE is paying the ridiculous dealership premiums. It's not like my local dealerships keep any parts in stock, so I can't even have instant gratification from that premium price. Thank goodness for Sunset. I buy everything I can from them. Note to self: Don't ever call a Boxster driver poor. Slow, maybe .. but not poor. JK!
  4. From reading about the experiences of others on this board, it seems you must ALWAYS use real OEM Mass Airflow Sensors and Oxygen Sensors. Avoid the ones on eBay because even if they work, you'll still have a check engine light. Other than that, look for the deals.
  5. Reminds me of an oil change I did on my old Ford Escape a couple years ago. I wasn't really paying attention, so I didn't notice the O-ring from the old filter had stuck to the car when I took took it off. I screwed on the new filter and completed the oil change never knowing what was in store for me. When I cranked over the engine to back the truck out of the garage, oil began spraying out from under the car in every direction. I shut it off quick, but wasn't fast enough to get out of the car and get the already sloshing-full oil pan back under it before it dumped at least another quart on the driveway. Not my finest work. I've been wanting to try that screw-on adapter. Sounds like a time saver.

  7. Nobody drives the 911s. Lots of people use Boxsters as daily drivers, which results in lots of high-mileage Boxsters. Very few purchase a 911 for that. Those of us who bought the early 996s for use as daily drivers in the past couple of years are just now starting to break 100k miles.

  10. I'm in Houston as well. Let me know if the Dynamat really makes a difference. I've been hesitant to bother with anything since I know so much road noise leaks through the convertible top anyway -- but it is annoying when I can't hear people on the phone at freeway speed even with the top up.
  11. For every story on this forum discussing a bad engine, there's another user with an original engine that passed 100,000 miles with no problems. Then you have to realize what a small sampling you're actually getting of total Porsche owners since very few take the time to read/post to the forums or work on their cars themselves. Trying to look at the situation from an objective outside point of view, I don't think Porsche had any more trouble with their M96 engines than say Ford did when it introduced the modular 4.6. However, the issue that comes into play is how much more expensive it is to replace an M96 should something go wrong.
  12. This is normal. When the wheels are rolling, there's less friction as they turn. When you're sitting still, you have the weight of the car staticly on that tire as it's scraping to turn against the pavement. In the days before power steering the steering ratios would be much higher - meaning you would have to turn the steering wheel more times to go lock to lock. I remember driving a 1961 Dodge Dart, and I swear it took three spins of the wheel to make a right turn. This was to make low-speed turns easier for those without much arm strength. Performance cars had much lower steering ratios because at speed on the track you want precision, and it was easy to turn the wheel. Power steering changed that, so now you can have a small steering ratio without needing giant muscles to park the car. You might want to check to make sure you've got power steering fluid in your reservoir.
  13. The car will run a pre-mapped program without the MAF, so if you unplug it and it stops stalling out, then you know it's the MAF. If you've already cleaned the throttle body and Idle Control Valve, my next guess is clogged injectors. By the way, you can order the Idle Control Valves through Autozone, and they have a very lenient return policy, so you could always swap it out to check and then take it back if that's not what you need.
  14. My 99 996 C2 has always been very stiff going into first while rolling but not at a stop.
  15. I just revisited the thread this morning for advice on the Hankook closeout deal. I was hoping somebody had actually used them to see if they were worth bothering with. I always try to post in relevant threads instead of starting new ones.
  16. Tirerack has a set of Hankooks on closeout for about $420. I've been using Bridgestone Potenzas, but just the rears cost me more than that and I'm only getting 13,000 miles out of them. All I do is commuting and highway driving. Seems like an incredible deal, but is it worth it or will I just be back to buying Bridgestones or Michelins in 6 months?

JeTexas, im thinking those mods are adding more air in the car and its overly compensating with oil and fuel? i'am also getting less mpg than originally when i had the cars w/o modifications. im not complaining about mpg though, more oil consumption than anything else. any feel for your 996 oil consumption over a 1000 mile period anyone? You're definitely moving more air, which in turn requires more fuel, but it shouldn't require more oil. I have a 99 996 C2 with 109k miles and get no oil consumption whatsoever.
  20. I don't think intake, radiator or exhaust mods would affect oil consumption in any way. No idea about whether or not you should try the oil.
  21. Don't be fooled by that company out of China that keeps listing "PIWIS" cables on eBay for $150. Those aren't real. As far as I can tell they're just bootleg versions of the Durametric cable. You can often find used Durametric enthusiast cables cheap because they only work on three cars. I bought one for $60 because it only had one car left on it. Now if I ever sell my car, I'll just send it along as part of the deal.
  22. What about getting inside the headlight to the round lens? Each of mine has a yellow spot from the bulbs burning it. Is there a way to open them to get to that? I started to attempt to pry them open but then chickened out.
  23. I get a coupon like that from Porsche West Houston about once a month offering 15% of my next scheduled service. Then in the fine print at the bottom it says, "for services over $150." Of course, the all-knowing techs at Porsche West Houston were the ones who were sure my hanging idle problem was the DME when it turned out to be tire size. My car was out of warranty when I bought it, so I've never had it dealer serviced and never will.
  24. Nine times out of ten, if the car is overheating while sitting in traffic, it's due to the fans not running.
  25. I have a 99 C2 with 109,000 miles, and it has only required one RMS replacement in its lifetime. I think if it's done right and the car is driven regularly, it's not a problem.
