  1. I hear a pump whine sound (like when you lock the steering wheel you hear the pump) from the right passenger side. It exists at all speeds except b/w 1500-2000rpm. There are no warning lights that come on and the car drives normally. Is this something I have to be worried about. my car is '03 base,5sp
  2. Sounds a lot like RMS. Sorry to hear that. Since its under warranty have it checked asap. The RMS is really not that big a problem but definitely needs fixing. Just watch the engine speeds. It doesn't look like its been fixed even on the 987's. C&D reported that they had this problem on their test car ... but then that was driven to the limit. But as far as 04's go its definitely there but not as common as the earlier models PS. In most cases the RMS problems happen within the first 10k miles
  3. Michelin pilot sport. Cant go wrong with those
  4. The volume changes when you're driving is very subtle. I have the bose on mine. When I start the car the volume is pretty low. But when I start moving it gradually gets louder and after that the changes cant even be noticed. You might want to try lowering and closing the top. That seems to effect the volume to a point where you can actually notice a change. And +7 is is the main volume you are talking about if I am not wrong. You can only turn the speed sensitive volume on or off. The rest is automatic.
  5. CA boxster I have checked the way the top folds and didn't notice out of the ordinary fold patterns. There are a couple of stains on the top (the car had 4k mi on it when I bought it. dont know what the previous owner did with it. He was 80 !!!!!!) That's was started me on this stress thingy. Cause I dont find anything that might have caused them. One body shop I went to suggested I use some foam pads where the support rods were, that way I reduce the stress on the canvas and also the sharp folding. I was going to try that. The weather here is really dry and he said that that might definitely cause this. Hopefully reconditioning the top and using the foam pads should take care of this problem ... I HOPE Djantlive Not soo lonely .. they do sell quite a few cars around this area. Just not that many where I live !!!! ;) So I'm not that lonely after all. But where I live (about an hour drive from the dealer) I am the only one with this car. Makes it real difficult to evade the cops ... THEY JUST KNOW WHERE I LIVE :((
  6. I haven't yet resprayed the top. I just ordered the raggtopp top cleaning yet. Will do it over this weekend and post pics of how it turns out. On the stress marks ... what got me concerned was that these marks didn't follow the wrinkle mark trends. They seem to stand out. Just have to do more of top up driving and there is just one dealer here in New Mexico so have no choice unless I plan a road trip :(
  7. These are two stress marks that are really visible. The others are a little hard to see. they look a bit worse in person than in the pictures
  8. The pilot sport rib's are like ski's in the snow. Don't ever use them as an all year tire. But for dry and rainy conditions the PS rib's do really well. Ofcourse all these tires have very poor tread life. But I have heard a lot of good things about PS a/s. They have exceptional wear for a tire that's z rated. They are a bit pricey but I guess they would be well worth the $$$ given your (bradsjazz) driving style
  9. The mark can be seen (atleast the ones I know of) mostly towards the rear end and around the glass window of the car. I had the dealer check for any sharp objects or the support rods that might be causing this. They found nothing. They suggested that I use some kinda foam pads at the points where the support rods are present to reduce the stress to the canvas material itself. Other than that they said that it was usual wear and tear issue. And I didn't know that Raggtop was that costly. The last I checked it was about $20 for a can.
  10. I have and 04 986 base. The water no longer beads on the top. It beads for a couple of seconds at the most and gets absorbed (even in light drizzle). My question is can this be rectified by treating the top with something like raggtop or something. Also the top shows a lot of stress marks which make those spots really thin like its wearing off. What can I do to prevent this from happening? Also how long do these tops last with proper care in a southern climate
  11. You could try and get a body shop to put a mesh on the inside of the bumper. That way the radiator and the condensor is protected. I had a similar thing happen to my 986 (04). Had a body shop fit that it really protects
  12. It most probably is the clamshell for the convertible top. Just needs a little adjusting. Not a major problem
  13. Toolpants, you still sticking with the sumitomo's. I actually kinda liked the kumho's. I got a set of ECSTA 712 when I had the 16" wheels. I had it on there for barely 1500mi. But for that period it was really good. Wet and dry. It was very quiet compared to the Michelin's I have now. Ofcourse you get what you pay for, but for $400 a set incl. balancing it was a steal. Even for a 16" wheel. A quick question. I have a lot of people here say that they have gone wider than the factory recommended tire sizes. I have the 17" on mine. How wide could I go (front and rears)? Maybe that might reduce the wear on the rear, even if by a little bit?
  14. Judging by the wear on my rears (have about 50% left and about 3500mi) it should last me atleast till 7k or maybe even 9k. And wear on the michelin pilot sport rib is very poor anyways. I spoke with michelin about this and they told me that on an average these tires last about 10k or I am quite sure this wear is not toe setting related. and the difference in the wear is pretty small so I dont have to worry about. My only concern (coming from A4 and the like) was that uneven wear was bad. But from what I read here and other places, this is not the case with sports cars (atleast not all the time). I just wanted to confirm that. ps. On the audi I had, which came with pirelli p6 all season, was supposed to last me about 30k miles and I wore it out in about 16k miles. So I guessed the life I predict I am going to get out of these michelins of about 8k is pretty good !!!!!!!!!!!! :) Just was hoping that I could find a set that had good performance, lasted real long and didnt cost as much. Just wishful thingking
  15. Thank you for the advice mee, 0586slb. I would have to redo the allignment sooner than I thought i guess. Regarding what 0586slb said .. I dont believe that I have a toe in problem as the surface of the tire is really smooth. No bump n' grind things. Correct me if I'm worng but I thought that if the toe settings dont fit the driving style then you should some "bumpy" wear instead of a smooth one. In my recent talk with the service dept at the dealership, they told me that the wheels are alligned for straight line highway driving (within 20min) so in my case that would explain the outer edged wearing slightly more than the inners. Since I didn't have such a high performance tire on my previous set of wheels (16" with kumho ecsta) I probably didn't notice it as much
  16. On another topic (uneven tire wear) that I posted, someone mentioned something about the big range in the allignment settings to still be in factory standards (-0.8 to ~-1.5). It does make sense that the inner edge wear faster with -ve camber. But like I said in the other thread ... suprisingly my rears show exactly the opposite. Not by a lot but you could notice. the difference in the tread depth may be less than 1/16" (approx). The service guy at the dealership told me that it could happen if I cornered a lot at high speeds even with -ve camber. Right now really not that concerned as the difference is negligilble. I don't drive much on freeways, just city roads and as fast as possible there (as long as the cops are not around, which is most of the time) But wanted to know what you "porsche pros" think on this absurd wear pattern? <_<
  17. Toolpants, that's some really ineven wear on your tires !!!!!! Is that normal and what if the wear pattern was reversed (more on the outside) though not as much as what you've got I swear by the Michelin PS rib. Simply amazing. Only that the it wears like butter. The fronts on mine still look brand new and rears are down 50% after only 3000 fast miles
  18. I think he did not know it meant himself. All he told me was the service guy who worked on the car said that it was 20min (At first he didn't even know that this car had a staggered wheel set up). I would have to verify it anyways and will be getting it realligned. The only guy who knows what's going on is the actual service guy who works on the car and to make matters worse there is just one guy there who works on porsches !!! I was confused because having the outer edge wear slightly more than the inner edge with -ve camber didn't seem right. When I was talking to a 911 owner at the dealership, he told me that genereally if the car were cornered heavily the outer edge would more than the inner depending on the amount of -ve camber. And looking at my car he said that there was very small -ve camber. I wanted to confirm this behaviour and know what those guys were going to do with the allignment. I never track this car and am not very familiar with these things
  19. The difference is definitely less than 1/16" compared it using a penny. This approximate. And the surface is smooth so no toe in problems. I spoke with the porsche tech at the dealership and he told me that the rear allignment is 20min. Not very clear what that meant but if I understood it correctly that would be about -0.4 deg camber. And he also told me that since I had the car alligned about 4~5mi ago its definitely not an allignment issue .. He said it just meant I am taking too many turns ;) !!!!!!!! He also suggested that I consistently maintain about 30psi in the front and about 34 at the back. That way the rears dont have to take too much load on the truns
  20. Really ... I thought I was going easy (compared to the audi I had). Anyways ... So this is really not a problem then is it. I was not really that concerned about the wear, but more with the uneveness of it. I new for sure it was not much or a problem because this uneven wear is consistent with both the rears. The fronts look brand new (i have about 3500 mi on them). So I take it that this is normal. I really love to take fast turns or corner at moderate to high speeds !!!! :) Thought I'd mention that Also if there is a negative camber shouldn't the inner side wear faster than the outer? And since this has one heckuva a handling I guess its safe to say that it does not have +ve camber?
  21. I have a 03 base boxster. The tires on the rear wheel seem to have more wear on the outside than on the inside. Is this normal for a spirited driving style. I had and allignment done on this about 8mths ago. The wear is consistent on both rears (more on the outside than on the inside). I read some place that 911s have more inside wear than the outside. I know this is got to do a lot with the allignment and camber stuff. My was was alligned at the dealership as per factory standards. I currently have 17" wheels with michelin pilot sport rib. I did speak with the dealship and they said that it was nothing to worry about. I generally inflate to what porsche recommeds but sometimes go 30 or 32 up front and 34 at the rear
  22. I was just worried of it being somekinda allignment issue. I knew that these things eat rubber !!!!!!! (especially if one like the curves ). But just wanted to make sure that it was not an allignment issue. The wear on both the rears look to be uniform. I was really suprised because I dont track this thing and still the tires lasted me only 3500 miles. Seem'd awfully low. Also I am running at 30 in the fronts and 36 on the rear. Maybe I should reduce the pressure on the rear and see what happens
  23. A quick question here. How long does a michelin pilot sport rib (rears) last. The ones on mine have about 3500 miles on them and they are already down to about 50% or maybe a little more. Is this normal with lost of around the city spirited driving? Also this place has a lots pot hole and most or the roads aren't that good. I have the 17" wheels on my boxster base. the fronts look brand new !!!!!!!
  24. I currently have 17 on my boxster. They came with the Michellin PS rib. I have about 2000mi on them. They are excellent dry weather tires. they just stick to surface. You just cant go worng with them. but the problem is the ride is really harsh(expected) with these. In wet conditions they perform pretty good. But you cannot do sudden maneuvers. I once did that trying to avoid some drunk driver one rainy night and the car just spun like a top. compared to Yokahama's N rated tires that came with the 16's I had the ride quality is something that's better left unspoken. But the handling of the car on the PS rib's is simply remarkable and I would say its the best way to go as long as you dont mind the harsher ride
  25. Toolpants appreciate the response. since this was a plastic piece, it would be a good assumption that its not something that's really important. Was just trying to get PCNA to (maybe ?????) replace the top itself (wishful thinking). I spoke with the porche tech at the dealership and he said that maybe its just some cables or something. Nothing to worry about ..... Or better yet I may just trade up as the dealership has a 2001 911 cab (fully loaded with carbon fibre etc etc), 20k miles for 61k. ;)
