  1. You should get the manual key working since it's likely this will happen again. Maybe your ECU needs to be reprogrammed. A tow truck driver or car locksmith should be able to open the door without breaking a window. If the car is parked inside, you may want to leave a window open next time.
  2. Call Stevens Creek Porsche. They have one that they are trying to sell under $1200 I believe. They are located in San Jose, CA and can ship.
  3. For the most part, I just wipe with damp towel. If it's too dirty, try the below cleaners. Lexol or zaino for vinyl and leather cleaner / conditioner Glass, windex Painted material, just water on towel
  4. W dead battery, you'll need to manually unlock the door. if your front hood release is electric, you'll need a spare battery w cable to connec to the fuse box by foot well inorder to release the hood. If it's manual release (which I think a 99 is), it'd be easier. You can then charge the battery or replace it if charging doesn't work. If you aren't handy, you can get a cig lighter charger that will charge it over a day or so. Otherwise, a decent charger for $40-50 will do. You should look into changing fluids, inflate tires as needed. Also, give the car a good detail.
  5. I'd listen to someone's setup first before you commit so you know what it sounds like. At a min, listen to the sound clip and compare that w stock or PSE.
  6. Raggtop has a restore kit that dyes the top I think, not the protectant spray.
  7. 1. You can wait on RMS until the clutch goes bad or when you start leaking more 2. $800-1200 depending if you get a specialist or a dealer to do this 3. get N spec tires. consult tirerack. Pilot SPort and SO2 are amongst the favorite of N spec. SO2 may be slightly better in rain.
  8. I use the Porsche protectant spray. It adds a little of color richness. Don't know about Renovo but I've heard Raggtop is good. Is this used for canvass top? Any description of the product?
  9. Also there is a place that sells a top w glass rear window that can fit into older Boxters w/ plastic window.
  10. Yeah, I'd get professional installation. It's not a straight drop in and requires experience to make things work. You can get Ghia or Porsche top. Guess which one costs more! If yours was damaged by thieve or vandal, get insurance to cover a new Porsche top.
  11. Try operating the top w your key in the driver door. If top works everytime, you know it's something related to the handbrake or switch on upper console (less likely). Otherwise, it's some issue w the top mechanism which may need top alignment, lubrication, or switch/motor. It's probly worth the money to take it to a top specialist or dealer to have it checked. A reputable shop can do wonders to the top. There is a hydrolic resevoir under the top which may be low on fluid causing intermitten failure too -- check this also! Good luck!!
  12. Noah is 3 ply, good for all weather, lighter than Technolon (Evolution 4) which is 4 ply. They are supposed to be similar in protection except Noah is lighter and slightly more expensive. Both are very soft on paint and offer excellent sun, rain, ding protection. California Car cover, Griot's garage, etc all have these in custom shape. Get one that's tan or grey that's not too dark to avoid heat build up. You don't want to attract attention w a cover. Get lock if you are worried about the neighborhood.
  13. Wow, that's over 20k mi a year. This guy must spend 1/2 of his day in this car driving around! LOL
  14. Porsche uses something called Krytox I believe. Not sure on spelling but it's something ridiculously expensive. My dealer used a 3M dry lubricant.
  15. You need a lic backing plate in blk plastic and two little posts that are held by screw into the nose holes. Avil at dealer and ebay. Check sunset porsche, brandywine, suncoast dealer also on prices.
  16. Any leak underneathe? Get the car up on ramps to check bc leak doesn't always drip to floor. Compression test should be done if no leak. Try to keep the oil in there for 10k mi. Sometimes new engine have a hard time breaking in w oil that's too new. Try thicker oil, esp in summer, 15-50 wt Mobil 1.
  17. You can also get a piece of non slip mesh matt avail at grocery store or home depot. It's a couple bucks for a yard which is more than enough to hold the carpet.
  18. 996 oversteering is surprisingly progressive. Your tail won't snap out all the suddent like a Boxster that has 50-50 weight dist. You can modulate the slide on 996 by slowing down and counter steer a little. In rain, just drive less aggressively than dry and you'll be fine w/o PSM. IMO, PSM is actually more useful on a Boxster than a 911. I thought 911's rear weight bias would swring out and be uncontrollable without electronic aid given I have heard so many stories and based on common sense. However, if the rear tires are good, you won't have any issues. Don't mix your tire types BTW.
  19. Actually, I've heard that turbo 11" rears fit as well, just don't use the spacers.
  20. Doesn't happen on my 02 996 which has the turbo look xenons. I would suspect it's electrically related. Either a headlight switch, alternator or battery issue. If the battery is old or none-OEM, keep an eye on it. Dimm interior lights would be an indication it's going bad. Headlight switch are known for going bad prematurely so that is another possible culprit.
  21. Tiptronic allows you to place the car at any gear as long as the car won't stall or blow. When the car is over 35mph, it can be placed in 5th gear which will rev just over 1k rpm.
  22. Check the level once a month at least. You can do that using the electronic oil level indicator before you start the car cold in the morning or the dipstick. Add about 1/8 of a quart if needed and measure again. Repeat until you are above the middle of the gauge/dipstick marking. Do not overfill the oil as that can cause foaming and poor lubrication, resulting in engine wear.
  23. Yeah, let's see some how to w pics of the install and finished product! Do you have to activate the bluetooth connection each time you enter the car? I know you only need to pair the device once but it seems that you would have to activate it everytime the connection is lost.
