  1. Let's see if we actually get our money back before lighting a stoagie or pushing the fat lady out on stage. Would be a lovely way to end years of frustration.
  2. I drive mine like my mother-in-law has fallen onto the road ahead of me - foot down hard, and with God as my witness ;) That said, never red-lined it - 6k tops. But, there's a lot fun to had there.
  3. Just returned to my car in the supermarket parking lot, to find someone let a shopping cart go in the wind and it's dented my car. Smaller than average cart, with plastic edges so it just made a dent without any scratches. Looks simple to repair, golf ball-sized and **** near a perfect circle, just behind the driver's door. Anyone got any advice on whether a dentless repair shop could just 'pop' this out? Looking for some input before I start visiting the vultures, as I previously heard aluminum is harder to work with.
  4. Not sure what you mean. The guy was a salesman, presumptuous (to say the least), but for once it worked out and I bought his product.
  5. So, I was searching for something less risky and intensive to help with the problem of the dull and hazy headlights on my 2003 C4 Cabriolet. Not fancying the headlight sanding and buffing route (I'm less than handy and would probably ruin the headlight in some way), I stumbled across a presumptuous sales guy at a gas station and somehow went from angry to happy. I was sitting there getting a fill up and this guy wanders up and sprays Carnauba Wax out of a can onto my headlights. In a flash, I am out of the car enraged and telling him to get the **** away from my precious. He insists in cleaning off the residue to make his point, at which point he is receiving perpetual warning from me about the consequences of damaging my pride and joy. Anyhow, he takes off the residue, buffs it with a microfiber cloth and the headlight is like it hasn't been for a couple of years. It didn't take the scratches out, but it seemed to remove the haze/odixdation or whatever the hell it is that makes the headlights look foggy. I bought the can, and for some reason (I know not why), this stuff seems to work. I won't go on about the obvious uses for this material, but I was VERY pleased with the results I got. Not perfect, but many times better than it was. I'd recommend this as a great interim measure, that's a lot less hassle than sanding and buffing, with less permanent results of course, but also much less risk. Not sure if the same holds up for regular carnauba wax, as this is out of a spray can, but it definitely worked for me - much to my surprise.
  6. feds27, if you're in Hoboken, NJ just drive up to Saddle Brook where Becker is, it'll be worth it. As the other member said, their site is not so compelling but if you go there, the guys are great. They fitted my aux and iPod for my CDR, including help shave one of the spare buttons on the dash, so I had a jack and not a cable hanging.
  7. Not sure I understand the 17k for the core....are you certain on that? I just had a Porsche remanuf popped in by my indy in NJ and the core charge was $5,000 minus the shipping (which the indy handled for me as a core charge and then a core refund, I didn't hand over any money for the core handling). If it was 6 or 7k, I wouldn't offer my opinion, but 17k seems a big enough jump that it struck me as worth clarifying. I also didn't go for the rebuild, due to the time wait. The remanuf engin was available and installed in around 10 days.
  8. I just had a remanuf Porsche engine dropped in by PowerTech in Northern NJ. I guess you're looking for minimal investment? I went balls-out and took the full hit.
  9. I believe they ran it for the 20 mins routine, etc and told me to vary the revs for the first few drives (tough on the highway, but did it by shifting up and down). Haven't pushed it past 3.5K revs yet, will take it in for additional oil change at 1,000 miles.
  10. Was told the engine should come broken in, but I am going to drive it carefully, try to not go over 3k or 3.5k revs for first 1,000 miles or so and will get it serviced at 1k as well.
  11. Well, I have my new engine - boy, does it purr. It doesn't purr as nicely as the $23k did in my bank account but I am somewhat satisfied nonetheless (Airbag and cab top issues were fixed same time, hence the additional costs). I can say one thing, I haven't driven it with mean intentions yet but right off the bat I should NEVER have bought the car I did - just a different feel from start up. Fat lot of good the Porsche Inspection did when I was buying, worthless without a cylinder inspection, etc. I live and, seemingly, never learn. Gonna be a good July 4 weekend, with the top down. I'm baaaaaaaack. :drive:
  12. I'd be interested too, just put a replacement engine in my 2003 C4 Cab, bought it two yrs ago with 50k miles and piston damage at 58k miles. Warranty also trying to 'do a deal', in similar manner. Shop seen the same issue many times over, declared it to be a 996 engine design fault.
  13. I just threw 19k into a 2003 C4, borderline whether it was worth it or not. Gotta love Porsche to part with the dough in these cases, that's for sure. My 993 was bulletproof compared to the 996. Still, I live and never learn ;-)
  14. I got mine on eBay for $400 bucks or so and had it re-sprayed as it was a different silver than my car. Wouldn't be without it in the winter, even considering the JP (jiggery pokery) for half an hour getting the window tracks to line up every autumn (fall).
  15. Hi, Go to the DIY Section, there's a whole section on Cabriolet tops. I regularly add hydraulic oil to mine, to ensure it is adequately topped up, but the fact the dashboard panel is flashing indicates you have an electrical issue that you should take to a dealer or independent. It's actually a fairly simple set of mechanics, all in all, so if the motor is dead someone can tell you. Also, the way the mechanism works, each 'step' in the open and close process gets its cue from the previous completing, so if one of the early steps is failling the mechanism with fail. If I was you, and take this for what it's worth, I'd find a good local indie with cab top experience, as he'll keep you out of the exhorbitant diagnosis costs of a dealer. Hope this helps. -Alf
  16. I've always had the same thing. When it started happening when the wife was not in the car, I took it more seriously. Exact same, give it a little gas and it goes away.
  17. I drive my C4 all winter long too, it's actually very good in the snow. I run all weather tires, never experienced any adverse performance due to weather, seems glued to the road - that said, I don't drive it like an idiot in such weather.
  18. Speaking from personal experience (replacing an engine right now and the Warranty company are trying to side step their liability), I wouldn't touch a neglected 996 with a ten foot pole. I bought mine through a high line dealer in Chicago and the previous owner kept it in storage 7 months of the year (minnesota), just disconnected the battery and left it. Didn't take care on the inside, let the kids walk on the console, etc. My pont is, these cars are exotic and even without neglect can be a money pit, but with neglect are a disaster to own. I paid $33k 2 years ago, have spent $8k in essentials and preventative maintenance and still coughing up $20k for a replacement engine. To think I almost bought the 2006 997 as well, but thought the money was better in the kid's college funds for something I only drive 3-4k miles per year (Yep, I've done <8,000 miles for the $60k it's cost me so far). Having said that, looking forward to getting it back and will have renewed faith in it with a Porsche remanufactured engine (hope I haven't spoken too soon).. Just be careful, there really aren't any bargains in the Porsche used car market.
  19. I just got the diagnostics back. The ticking was the lifters, but closer inspection showed cylinder damage - so we're looking at a new or remanufactured engine at this point. Fortunately, I have a warranty but I am sure there'll be some surprises in store in the days ahead. Will keep you updated. Another 996 failure, I've never tracked it or driven it hard, the codes read one redline event with the previous owner for couple of seconds 5 yrs ago.
  20. Sorry for delay in updates, I've got it booked in with my Indy for Thursday and will post the results. I believe the ticking/knock is the lifters at this point, but we'll see. Just for fun, my airbag failure light came on, and my cab top stopped working, so it's a good time to be going in..... as well as the 6-month oil change and investigation why the driver side exhaust smokes at start up. Should prove for a decent update this time next week.... Thanks for all the responses to date.
  21. Travelling excessively with work right now, will likely get the car into my Indy after the Memorial Day weekend and post the updates here. Only takng it on very short journeys at this time, it's warranteed (that doesn't mean I am being ambivilent to the noise/condition), just that I hopefully have a safety net in the event of a troubling diagnosis. Thanks for all the answers!

  23. I am not sure how hard one should press, but I was leaning my head into it as well. Being a novice really didn't help me out in this regard. I could hear the noise without doing this and it seems to be coming from within the engine itself.
