  1. Many European cars since the late 80's came with halogen lights under projector lens setups. Although some people have done the conversion of those halogen projectors to HID, some say it's really not ideal (and in Europe the car would automatically fail inspection). The reason that it fails inspection in Europe is because the halogen projector capsule is a different design than an HID projector capsule - even though it looks cosmetically similar. Also the halogen projectors weren't required to have self-leveling motors - whereas HID projectors have self leveling systems that dip the lens in accordance to sensors on the front suspension. If I were stuck with halogen projectors as the original poster is, I'd pop in high quality halogen H7 bulbs and call it a day....
  2. EXCELLENT write up. Had me grinning ear to ear. Enjoy your car in good health.
  3. hard to tell what you mean by groaning noise. take a video upload to youtube with your phone
  4. Oh please, don't even get me started. Porsche sold (and continue to sell) plenty of $100k cars without a rear windscreen wiper or power seats or BT. I think the air inside the cabin was an option :) Thanks for the link. The link says I have an "H7" does that sound right? Yes. H7. BTW if you want the absolute best Halogen bulbs, I recommend this site. http://www.powerbulbs.com/us/blog/2013/10/auto-express-2013-bulb-test-winners The Europeans take lighting more seriously than here - and they test these bulbs...I've ordered from this site before - shipping to US is free.
  5. I think you get what you pay for with Tires. I would get Michelin A/S 3 if you have SOME winter driving you're doing. For what it's worth I've actually TRACKED THE CAR with these A/S tires on and they were incredible and got 25,000 miles out of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5VlRr5QQL0 Before I moved into a house with basically unlimited storage I had these on for year round use and perfectly good snow traction and unbelievable dry traction. The Continental DWS have a known problem with weak sidewalls - I'd avoid them.
  6. You DEFINITELY have halogen lamps...(not HID). Go here: https://www.sylvania.com/en-us/applications/automotive-lighting-systems/Pages/lrgmain.aspx and select halogen (NON HID) as the option) (Btw one of the first C4S i've seen w/out HID - didn't know they even sold any w/out Xenon HID for a $100K+ car!!!)
  7. Never heard of the necessity to road force balance after spacers.
  8. RFM, Thanks for responding. Just to confirm you don't see the "year" being an issue as long as I have the same manufacture? If mine is a 1999 ZF and I buy and install a 2003 ZF I should be good to go? I am just confirming before I go spend $$$. Thanks Larry Larry, You have to buy a 1999-2001 ZF tiptronic from a 996. Starting from 2002 - ALL 996s were fitted with the Mercedes AMG 722.6 transmission which is incompatible with your 2001 car.
  9. you probably need a new conductor plate on the transmission.
  10. several attempts on Rennlist and 6speedonline - it never happens due to weak demand.
  11. For future searchers - the problem was the passenger side flap was not tucking in under the clam shell quickly enough so it was getting stuck. I cleaned the guide and lubed it and now the flap tucks in properly.
  12. I press the button to lower the top with handbrake engaged. Windows go down Top unlatches It starts to go down smoothly and quickly, clamshell opens normally. Gets almost to the end of the opening sequence, but the clamshell fails to close all the way - it stops just before it needs to latch onto the rear latch and so I have like a 4 inch gap and I have a convertible top open light. I hear some clicking sounds as it tries to make that last close. The top otherwise operates fast and smooth - so I doubt it's fluid. I can close it fully with no problems. I tried to see if any part of the headliner had come loose, nothing. I tried to see if any cables were binding - nothing. Anyone else had this happen to them and what was the resolution? Car is 996Mk2 so that TSB for the contact switches for the 98/99 MY doesn't apply. Thanks,
  13. audi's, volvo's, jag's sold in NA seem to have two foglights light up in the back. Highly irritating - I turn on my high beams when I'm behind them and there's no fog or rain.

  15. The problem ended up being the solenoid on the conductor plate. The SA did say it's extremely rare to see a TCU go bad - for this fault code it's most often the solenoid/speed sensors on the conductor plate on the valve body. It's all fixed.
  16. and yes if you can send it to me that would be great. I'm at roadsession at gmail.com
  17. Hi Loren, Thanks - yes it's been reset 2X and keeps coming back. i also reset adaptation. battery is new, ignition switch is new.... Is the 715 caused by the faulty RPM sensor in the valve body or is the RPM sensor not responding due to faulty TCU? Thanks
  18. Hi Loren It's a 2002 996 C4 with the mercedes 722.6 transmission... Thanks!
  19. Apologies for the xpost but realized most naturally aspirated 996 have 6MT and many turbo owners seem to have tips....and the 722.6 transmission is shared...so here goes: My car is in the shop with the following faults from the durametric: DME: P0715 Porsche fault code 552 Tiptronic supply voltage speed sensors Tiptronic: 13 RPM Sensor N3 transmission definitely hunts from 2 to 3 to 4 Transmission fluid level is ok, and it was changed 5,000 miles ago. Dealer is saying it could be TCU or valve body. I don't want to go through a $5,000 trial and error - what are your thoughts? in your experience which has been the most likely culprit of the two? Thanks
  20. I had to replace both inner and outer tie rods to resolve mine. There was a lot of play and I track the car so big safety issue
  21. OK, the P0175 is often a code often caused by something as simple as the fluid level being a little too low; are you sure the fluid level is correct? If the fluid level is correct, the speed sensor in question is mounted to a conductor plate on the top of the valve body in the transmission: Thanks.... Hi JFP, the thing is that the dealer replaced transmission and differential fluid in January using their highly precise method for doing so....by the book so as to speak, and I have tile flooring in my garage and would have seen leaks....so I'm thinking the valve body may be shot - hopefully it doesn't mean a full rebuild or reman unit :- I would still check the fluid level first, it would not be the first time I've seen a car right out of the dealer's that was low on fluid. Checking is a bit convoluted due to where the transmission is, but can still be done as a DIY; do a search in the archives for servicing the Tiptronic, it has been written up more than once. The speed sensor itself may be the only thing that needs changing, but unfortunately that entails removing the valve body to get at it. Not hard, but not fun either. JFP: dealer called back. The fluid is ok, it appears to be speed sensor which is in the valve body or the TCU or both. They said valve body is a $2500 or so part. Now the problem is that I don't think they can just change the speed sensor - appears they'd replace the whole valve body. If I were to just replace speed sensor n3, where can I buy such a part and how much would it cost? If i were to have to replace entire valve body do you know where I can buy it and cost? Thanks Both items are Porsche parts, suggest contacting Sunset Porsche in Beaverton, OR (503.641.8600) for pricing. VW and Mercedes also use the same parts as well. ok - called Sunset Porsche, they are saying that the valve body can be ordered, but that there are other parts like solenoids that can be ordered separately - he couldn't find an item called a speed sensor or rpm sensor on the transmission. Do you by any chance have an idea what the part number for just the speed sensors could be, or am I better off just buying the valve body? thanks

  24. Thanks, but here's an update: So, I changed the ignition switch, reset adaptation, cleared codes, and all was fine for 2 days. Then I get this today: DME: P0715 Porsche fault code 552 Tiptronic supply voltage speed sensors Tiptronic: 13 RPM Sensor N3 and of course the "emergency run mode". any ideas?
