  1. Yes, you are correct, you only need one switch. The two different parts are so you can use a slot on the left or right.
  2. As an owner of an 03, I have to agree that profile looked better on the older cars. I actually like the new headlights, but the new bumpers (front and rear) don't look at nice from the side. I like how the earlier 996s drew inside as you look down from the bumpers to the wheels. The newer one looks out of balance some how from certain angles. To answer your question, the bumpers are very different (front and back). Plus there are minor interior changes and such.
  3. Mine started leaking at about 800 miles. But it was more along the centerline of the car, just in front of the engine. About a quarter-size drop or two per day. I've been thinking about lifts also, but I haven't decided yet.
  4. Our local Walmarts and Targets don't carry it, so I ordered a case from CDOC. But then I found it at a little ricer shop in a not so nice part of town on my way to work. Go figure.
  5. I'm going to be changing my brake fluid to get ready for DEs in March. I figure I might as well put ATE Blue in there. If I do that, do I have to bleed the clutch also? In other words, do I need to make the Blue is in the clutch cylinder and the rest of the clutch system? If I don't (and just do the brakes), can old brake fluid migrate from the clutch cylinder back into the brakes? Thanks!
  6. Tires make a big difference, but I think most people seem to agree that the M3 brakes have enough power to overwhelm most tires. And of course, the 996 can do that, too. The big difference is that the 996 brakes are designed to be able to brake hard 10-20 times in a row, provided you have good fluid in there. OTOH, my E36 M3 wasn't very good after 8-10 aggressive stops. Or even after 2-3 panic stops. I don't think the E46 is much better, even with aftermarket ducting.
  7. Yes, sir, that would have saved us a lot of time! Our passat (which costs less than the options on some people's 911s) came with the homelink in the visor. And that visor is pretty thin also. Time to check the junkyard. Thanks for your help, as always!
  8. Loren, So you ended up using just the guts from the homelink and not the buttons, right? I could do that with just an old spare garage door opener with 3 buttons? Also do you get good reception from that location? If so, I have another idea. I replaced my ash tray with the non-smoker tray. I'm wondering if I can mount the homelink unit (with buttons) on the inside (driver's side) wall of that tray. (make a cutout in the tray itself) Then it would be pretty accessible and hidden, and easy to remove/undo later on if I want to. What do you think? Also, the VW/Audi homelink unit in their visors looks a lot smaller (thinner) than the one in that picture.
  9. Congratulations! But please, please don't count on the park assist to consistently see something as small as a child. It's not a replacement for being aware of where your family is when you back up. In cars I've had with park assist, I use it to gauge how close I am to something I already know is back there (like another car, or a wall or something), NOT to warn me about something I didn't know was there. I'm assuming you don't want to back up to within inches of your child, so don't think of park assist as having anything to do with your kid. It's for cars and walls and things that you can afford to make mistakes with. Sorry to get on a soapbox, I got chills when I thought of Park assist *hopefully* warning you of your kid being behind you. Enjoy the Cayenne!
  10. Firewired, what a great idea! (BTW, congrats again on your new car. This is M3again from M3forum). I have a spare pair of vinyl visors which I don't mind tearing up to figure this out. I wonder how accessible the power is in there. How much of the vinyl do I have to open to get to the power? The Audi homelink visor buttons definitely look like they will fit the 996 visors.
  11. I use Zaino on our other two cars (Mercedes and VW). And I like the super shiny, super durable finish on those cars. But I much prefer Griot's on the 911 (Seal grey). Deeper, richer, more consistent color, IMO.
  12. I ended up using a dremel tool and grinding those tabs off.
  13. The tension on the blue cable is what centers the shifter. I had to adjust that cable a little to get the shifter to center where I wanted it.
  14. Does the female part of the no-smoker plug have a light around the base? I don't like the way the light ring looks on the stock receptacle. It doesn't quite match the other lights around it.
  15. Here's another page about this hack. It's basically the same procedure. But will this work on 03 cars? I don't think the orange bulb in the headlight assembly is on as a parking light all the time when the headlights are on. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/ma...arkerflash.html Now what if I don't want the lights on as sidemarkers, and I want *exactly* the behavior of the RoW cars?
  16. Flatspotting is from the car sitting on one spot of the tires and flattening that part out. If I don't drive the car for a few days, I get a little vibration also which goes away once the tires are warmed up.
  17. Yep, I'm pretty sure of that, too. No more asbestos in any brakepads.
  18. Also, you might want to get new sleeves between the cats and the mufflers. Reusing ones that are already crushed might be hard.
  19. On my car (03 C2) I can easily hear the clutch switch operate. It switches right at the end of the pedal travel. I hear a definite click before I turn the key or before I switch a gear.
  20. Since I installed by RoW M030, it seems like the headlights are low compared to our other cars. I know these are self-adjusting, but on my Audi I was able to adjust the base level of the Xenons and then the self adjustment goes from there using my adjustment as the baseline. But on this 996, I took the rubber cover off the "vertical adjustment" and I can't see or feel any kind of knob or screw in there. Am I missing something? Thanks!
  21. On the PSE: If you aren't installing the switch, and want to save a little, it's really easy to install the mufflers yourself. You can get a nice price on the PSE hardware at carnewal and put it in yourself.
  22. I've seen a DIY write up that said you should replace the caliper bolts when the caliper is removed to replace rotors on a 996/Boxster. But I went to a PCA tech session about brakes and they never mentioned this. Do these bolts needs to replaced every time they are removed? Thanks!
