  1. PSM. Assuming you disconnected your battery, the following may rectify it :-Steering angle sensor (PSM) The steering angle sensor must be re-initialised when the battery is disconnected and connected. Turn wheels to straight-ahead position. Switch ignition off and then on again twice. Start engine. From the straight-ahead position, turn steering wheel approx. 20 degrees to the right, past the straight-ahead position. Drive the vehicle straight ahead for at least one second at a speed above 2.5 mph.
  2. Door/window seal? Gummi Pflege might be worth a try. P.S. You haven't mentioned the age of your car, but I see that you later refer to the sound as "squealing". A small tear in the AOS diaphragm? There's a simple test if you haven't got smoke from the exhaust. From memory, start the car and then remove the oil filler cap. There should be little resistance in removing the cap, and a small amount of suction. You might want to verify that procedure.
  3. Richard, we're both clearly looking to help out. I cut my teeth on a TR7 (wow, that dates me (:-) However, my one and only Porsche has never been in a garage and, after fifteen years, still runs much as it did when I first took delivery. Would you agree that if one is intent on keeping their Porsche, then a Durametric (at least) is an investment which more than covers its outlay? That would be my next piece of advice, Jay, for what it's worth. I've found it to be invaluable.
  4. For the transmission on my car (ZF), there's a very precise procedure for ensuring the ATF is at the correct level. Unfortunately, it's not simply a case of pumping in the transmission-specific fluid. Topping up would require the fluid to be at the correct temperature and, naturally, the car needs to be absolutely level. I would imagine that there's a specific procedure for the Mercedes transmission.
  5. Unfortunate and frustrating, no doubt, but from my experience with Porsche, all caps are clearly labelled ..... and I'm quite advanced in years.
  6. From those posting, I'm obviously the least qualified to comment given that I've no experience whatsoever with that particular car. My reasoning is that before starting to delve into the transmission itself, ruling out that it's not an incorrect fluid level is the simplest task. Garages are not infallible! If the transmission is not properly filled and a rapid acceleration is applied, then I believe that the 'sloshing effect' could be sensed as insufficient fluid and the warning triggered. When driven on the level or when parked, it wouldn't. I may be wrong. Anyway, I hope that the fix is not too painful as a car like yours deserves to be driven.
  7. I've read conflicting information, hence the suggestion to see if there's a ZF plate on the transmission itself. Crawling underneath from the rear of the car, it's normally fairly easy to find. If it is a ZF, then there's a very precise procedure to be followed when filling. The ZF is also very particular as to the ATF used. Checking what fluid was put in and its level would be my first approach.
  8. On the assumption that it's a ZF transmission, there will be a plate on the housing giving part number etc. It would probably be wiser to confirm that number and then cross reference from that. You mention your car as being a 996t (2005). Wasn't 2005 the year in which the 997 was introduced?

  10. I drive a Boxster but having to remove the transmission sounds way too extreme for Porsche. Have you checked the tightness of the bolts on the thermostat housing as a first step? Hoses? Unless there's been prior work carried out which has disturbed the thermostat housing, it might be a better idea to carefully check out your water pump.
  11. Yes, the Boxster is a superb car. I've had mine for 14 years now and it's still a joy to drive each and every time. If you do a search, you'll find a wealth of information on malfunctions of the Boxster roof. Maurice is the authority.
  12. Did you measure how much oil actually came out after draining? In a petrol (gas) engine, the oil should not turn black anywhere near that quickly. Under normal circumstances, that would be excess (unburnt) gas getting into the combustion chambers. Leaking injectors?
  13. Wow ! You sure appear to be advancing rapidly in the mastering of how to carry out an oil change. I'd stick to well-proven basics if I were you.
  14. The most sensible course of action, as Loren has suggested, is to try to narrow it down by way of fault codes. Guess work will invariably prove to be an extremely frustrating and expensive approach.
  15. It's never a good idea to overfill the engine. Unless I'm mistaken, with a filter change, 10 quarts is an overfill of one quart. I'd drain that and then see where you stand.
  16. Thank you, JFP. Will do as you have suggested. Just one question. Can that be accessed from the trunk or does it entail dismantling the dashboard?
  17. Hello. I'm having a problem of no heat in the car. Both pipes behind the battery leading to the heater core are hot, so I suspect the temperature sensor on the right hand side of the dash is the problem. After removing the circular cover and the three screws on the panel, it won't budge. Are there clips to contend with? Thanks for any guidance.
  18. Whilst possibly the starter motor, I'd be inclined to look at the starter relay. Other possibles to check are the connections on the battery circuit to starter. I wouldn't rule out a faulty ignition switch if it's none of the foregoing. The stall whilst driving was presumably the result of the failed alternator and a progressively drained battery. Keep your spirits up !
  19. If there's no oil on the ground and there's no intermix or overheating issue, don't fret ..... and enjoy the freedom of the autobahns to drive as your car should be driven!
  20. Wiring between alarm module and door locks or, a door lock(s) itself.
  21. 2003 2.7 Tiptronic. Little or no oil consumption. Mobil 1 0W40. Owned from new. After all these years, still an absolute joy to drive each and every time. Happy motoring !

  23. Odd ..... if the immobiliser repair work fixed that aspect of the problem. If you're not equipped to read the codes which have presumably been thrown up, you might just try to disconnect the battery for an hour or so and then see if reconnecting changes anything.
  24. "...... car won't start" .... as in no electrical activity at all or, it cranks but won't fire? If you have a spare key, have you tried that?
