  1. Sounds like a fun project! A few thoughts: Definitely new DOT approved brake lines as old ones go soft and then brittle. Koni or Bilstein shocks and front/rear stabilizer bars. Maybe stiffer torsion bars. Probably a bit more rubber than the 185/70s that Ts came with. I got 215/60s and 7" R rears wheels on my old 70 911. Stock tires are hard to come by with lower profiles today. Consider a roll cage if that is an option under "original appearance." Obvious roll over protection, and it can stiffen the chassis significantly. Especially if track days are planned.
  2. Clean it the best you can and then enter a fun show. Preferably a wash'n shine show with just the body and interior judged. It is more fun that way than to obsess. My first event I arrived minutes before judging after a 4 hour drive. I was able to sorta clean the windshield and throw our stuff in the trunk before judges showed up. Hope they appreciated the bugs on the front bumper cover that I did not have time clean. Cars were also judged by vote of attendees for Peoples Choice type awards. All I know is we finished below 3rd in the Boxster class. It was for charity and my wife and I enjoyed the other cars, the people, and the Carolina Barbecue meal with great beers. And oh yeah, I got gooseflesh when the neighborhood kids lined up at the gate to cheer as one German car after another made "meaningful" exits up thru the gears.
  3. Nice post. Good technique. One question: why would the Porsche clearcoat kit be harder than the existing clearcoat.
  4. Rana1 is right! Even if it is only an RS. I don't think the RS was exported to US in 74. If you have the 3.0 engine it is a great find. The racing RSR was still raced thru 75 IIRC. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

  6. I don't know about 987s, but my :censored: Audio Pilot doesn't seem to do anything. It is s'posed to be more of a sound conditioning device than the older speed dependent volume system which was fed by the speedometer. My hearing, especially high freqs, isn't too good anyway. I've gotten used to volume adjustment the old fashioned way. But I've also had no strange ghosts in the radio.
  7. I'd have a pro look at it. That kind of crack can expand, especially with drastic temperature change. Can be dangerous if something strikes the windshield. I've heard of cracks being drilled at both end and filled in, but sounds like something less than good.
  8. For the record I do not believe it is inevitable that every M96 will grenade. As Jake says, more do not explode than do explode. My feeling about Raby's rebuilds is that I'm glad it is there as an option besides a new engine. It was not that long ago when Conventional Wisdom said that the M96 was not rebuildable. And that Porsche would maybe work a deal on new or rebuild engines. Excellence magazine has done a better job than any other mag to remove the Urban Legend aspects of 986s and 996s. And RennTech has been a great forum for discussions about it.

  10. Personally, if my engine explodes it is going to Jake Raby. If you like really heavy cars with short range it might be okay. Especially if you are an electrical engineer who likes to tinker. Recently read about an electric by Ruf, not bad performance. Were I to go that route I'd look for a cheap 2.5 and have a go at it.
  11. Okay, I only did a thorough reading of specs at Crutchfield, tho I saw two places on my Google that said they sold it for ~900 bucks. I'll ask the dummy question: How can you tell it is MOST compatible? Or are you assuming a complete amp system replacement?

  13. Try a search on MOST + amplifier + head unit. MOST is the :censored: stupid glass fiber item. There is a JL Audio solution also, so try a search on that. Did you check DIY section? This has been documented somewhere on this forum I'm certain.
  14. There are lever type devices that you use your thumb to open. Then snap the screen in and close the levers. Actually I think they close when you have inserted them properly. This is critical or you next move could be retrieving the windscreen from the road.

  16. From memory I think they are riveted on. I know it has been covered in this forum. Try a search and check DIYs. It is not difficult to add the brackets.
  17. The standard advice is to buy the best car you can afford. The 03s have several new features that 02s did not. I cannot remember what year the MOST bus was included (02 or 03). The optical interface makes it more difficult to install an aftermarket radio, if that is a major concern. My advice is to make two lists. One is the features you cannot live without (like cruise, heated seats, Bose, Nav). Second is a list of things you do not HAVE to have, but would be willing to take even if they ran the cost up (like sport seats, full leather, litronics, etc). Your broker would have a good idea how to shop for you.

  19. The MOST bus makes it too hard for most of us. At least one genius reportedly successfully installed one, but just reading the description of the work was too hard for me. Search on AVIC. D3 version I think. And Google m0wbridge.

  21. I went with Ultimate Pedals and am happy with them. I got the rough surface with flat rubber dots and the heel extension on the go pedal. Brake and clutch feel not much different. The dead pedal and gas pedal have much improved feel over the hard plastic. I was going to double-sided tape the dead pedal and gas before I decided to get the heel extension version. Thought the tape would not survive the first heel-toe. I mostly roll my foot onto the gas, but the extended heel still helps a lot. So I screwed the dead pedal in for uniformity. By the way, I have no trouble drilling out the brake/clutch pedals. Just used a new bit.
