  1. We stayed at the Springhill Suites in Flagstaff, great accomodation. Started off in the morning and drove to the eastern end of the south face Grand Canyon park and then took our time driving and stopping periodically as we made our way west along the ridge. The public road ends and then we took a bus for the last bit to a place appropriately called Hermit's Rest. We then returned to the car and drove a bit west and south back to Flagstaff for another night. Suggest you take a pick nick lunch-lots of sightseers eyeing ours. Don't miss the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert relatively nearby-quite spectacular. As I recall our GPS was off-roading through much of St. Louis and OK city. Lots of construction back in 2012. Hoover Dam was a bit disappointing after all that we had already seen but should be seen nevertheless. Take it in while driving to or leaving Las Vegas. We are not gamblers but enjoyed walking the whole strip up and down in relatively cool weather (not the norm I understand). BTW, I got lots of suggestions prior to our trip from fellow Porsche nuts. Here is one thread that may be of help: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/664000-touring-california-need-suggestions-3.html Cheers, Johan P.S. My avatar is form somewhere near the Big Sur.
  2. In 2012, we started off north of Toronto went south and hooked up with route 66 all the way south and west through Amarillo, TX, Flagstaff, took in the Grand canyon, the Painted Forest, etc. all the way to San Diego. Then north on #1 up the gorgeous coast to Monterey. Our plan was to go home the northern route via the Napa Valley and Reno but got chased south by a late spring snow storm in the higher elevations (summer tires). Doubled back via China Lake, Ridgecrest, Las Vegas, passed through Norman the day after their devastating tornado-got up really early drove 900 miles in one day to escape the storm clouds-I think that I was driving 95-100 mph most of the way-exhilarating (cops too busy dealing with weather issues). Took in the Porsche Hershey Swap-Meet on the way back. Six weeks in the Porsche with my wife. Most would not understand. Do it! Johan
  3. Steve, Many thanks for your detailed post. There is a happy ending I'm sure. Cheers, Johan
  4. Hey Steve, glad that you got to the bottom of your problem. I think that I may have a similar problem on my hands so any pointers and pics of the R&R would be appreciated. Good luck Johan
  5. A number of years ago a fellow forum member suggested Walmart batteries (cheap and 3 year no haste warranty). Bought one (OEM size) and about a year later I was having some trouble starting. So I rolled into Walmat, pulled out the battery, took it in, they gave me a new one on the spot no questions asked and no testing done, installed it in the parking lot and drove off. I later discovered that my electrical issue was a silly cheap USB charger and not the battery. There is always a Walmart nearby wherever we travel in Canada and the USA- best insurance IMO. Johan
  6. I'm not sure that I agree with you. PS2 pricing is outrageous! N spec is overrated IMHO. Super Sports or R-11's would be my likely choice for the next set. I have heard enough from fellow PCA members all who stay away from PS2's unless they track. Johan
  7. Hi Steve, I think that I have mislead you for which I appologize. You have the K-jetronic FI system rather than the later system that I'm more familiar with. As such I don't think that you have what I referred to as an idle control valve. In looking at the PET (http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/) illustration 107-10 and 107-20, you have an air by- pass and warm up valves that may be the problem(s). Aside from that, a post on Pelican, will undoubtedly provide you with some beneficial responses. Good luck. Johan
  8. Tap the idle control valve several times with the plastic end of a screw driver. If the rpm lowers, you are on to it. Next would be vacuum leak. There are several threads on this in the Pelican 911 Technical forum. Good luck. Johan
  9. Wow, bummer! Maybe something inside the tire like a loose screw from the TPMS? Do you have the sound when you test without the rim on? If not your next alternative would be to check examine the bearings for missing balls and the half shaft universal joints. Good luck. Johan
  10. Sounds like a broken/loose spring inside the parking brake drum. Good luck. Johan
  11. I gree with above cautions. Also, a lighter flywheel will likely lead to erratic idling, stalling on deceleration and when the A/C cuts in, a totally lousy experience.
  12. Good to know. Sometimes you just need yourself to talk thru it. :-) Cheers, Johan
  13. Not familiar with those brands. Make sure they are German, Japanese or USA. Stay away from Chinese made and you'll be good to go for another 30 years with regular greasing. Cheers, Johan
  14. Had the same front lower valance. Typically, fog lights from the early eighties SC/turbo fit. OEM is too expensive. Try Hella http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/0796/POR_0796_ELLITE_pg8.htm#item28 Installation is sometimes an issue as the lights hang from above and the valance may not have adequate return inside the top of the hole. May have to remove valance as fiberglass one in. Cheers, Johan
  15. Need more symptoms to even begin to help. Does it cough and sputter as it dies? If it does, it likely points to fuel related. If not, likely electrical. Does it happen only once per drive or does the shutdown repeat? Tank full? Have you ever drained the tank and cleaned out the screen? Does it happen sooner if you drive hard? When was your fuel filter changed? Fuel smell? Jiggle the ignition key. Warn? Get yourself a new DME relay and exchange. Every 911 should have a spare in the glove box in any event. Clean the fuse connections. Check/exchange the red fuel pump relay in the front. Check and re tighten fuse connections. It's a start. Good luck. Johan
  16. Do a search for "foam". Much already posted that may be helpful. Cheers, Johan
  17. Coil pack issue will be pronounced if the car has been sitting in inclement weather or if you are driving in the rain. Best get the codes read before you spend you $$$. Good luck Johan
  18. Hi Mario, Welcome to this board. you have a prized possession whether or not the numbers match. I would post your query on Pelican Parts as there is an unbelievable following and expertise for the older Porsches there. Do a search first and the question may have already been answered. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8 You should be able to find your manual on: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17 Cheers, Johan
  19. Nice work. Can you expand on what seats you used (997?) and whether resurfaced or replaced door panel, etc. what kind of sound insulation did you use( can't recognize logo) and why did you go the extra mile with the insulation?- new sound system,Peeved with rear tire road noise ?..? Cheers, Johan
  20. OH, sorry for the rant. Got a bit off topic. As to your question on popping the seal, seeing that the bearing is not noisy you know that there won't be anything in there. So let LN have it. Johan
  21. Congratulations on taking charge of this potential nightmare. Too many of us 996 and 997 owners are procrastinating and as a result not enjoying these otherwise great cars. Seems to me that a new bearing from whomever together with a DOF system is the way to go. I would personally prefer the DOF system that feeds off the oil filter (rather than of the head) but as I understand it it's not available to the DIY. In my case with a 997S, I don't have the luxury of replacing the bearing so I am going to feed the DOF from Tuners RS from the LN spin-on oil filter adapter already installed and I'm also going to put an oil pressure gauge to the oil-line. **** the torpedoes-better than nothing. M2CW Johan
  22. When did you last change the AOS, which located in behind the throttle body? Do a search here and you'll find lots of info.
  23. And if you still screw it up, then unscrew the oil filter and drain some oil out, but not too much. Repeat if necessary after you run the motor.
